I think that you misunderstood my secret. I don't think that people who dislike him or don't sympathize with his character lack empathy. Just those who bash him for the way he's reacted to his trauma. I.E Those who don't sympathize with the reasons for why he acts the way he does. And by 'sympathize' I really meant 'pick up on and acknowledge'. I apologize for wording it badly.

The difference between this and the Harry Potter stuff is that in Harry Potter, it was building to an end that was almost painfully obvious, and not -liking- where it was going doesn't change a thing. From the first PW trilogy to AJ, there are a lot of huge canon changes that come out of nowhere and some people understandably don't like them.

You can't ignore the canon in Harry Potter just by pretending the ending doesn't exist; it was hinted from the beginning. You can pretend there's just the original PW trilogy since AJ might as well be a completely new storyline.

Of course, I don't think either of those are the way to go but hey, here's to playing Devils' Advocate. Still a needlessly meanspirited secret~

I don't think you have anything to be worried or ashamed of. Sure, people don't like Hobo, I make it no secret--but there's tons in the fandom who do, that's more than obvious. Hell, I hate the guy but I've got a bunch of friends who love him and I don't think any less of them one bit.

Just tell people. If anyone calls you a 'heretic,' then ignore them. You can disagree with people without going into 'heresy' ... or in theory, anyway.

If I can't tell it's fandom and all the people freaking out over it can't tell it's fandom, the reference is too vague, I think.

2. Why. Shinpachi is awesome. I will never understand this "my friends will never let me live it down" mindset that just about all these secrets have. If they're mocking you for crushing on a 2D character...eh. If it's specifically Shinpachi, then I still don't see why, because as I said, he's still awesome, and as far as I can tell, very few people in the fandom hate him or anything.
