Theatrical Cut vs Director's Cut/Extended Edition

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
For any of the many movies that have both a theatrical and extended cut, both of which you have seen: which one do you prefer, and why? How, if at all, do the extra/different scenes change the meaning of the movie?

(feel free to discuss more than one movie!)

Alright, well, let's get this started.

The original theatrical cut of Blade Runner (with the voiceover) is not that bad, and in some ways I actually prefer it. The only real problem with it is the happy ending, which is obviously dumb. But get rid of that and I don't think it's worse than any other version.

Wow, I guess I strongly disagree with you on that one. I definitely prefer the Director's Cut.

The theatrical cut also has those awful voiceovers, which were just about literally phoned in from Harrison Ford. He didn't want to do it and had been promised he wouldn't have to do it, and yet it happened anyway due to studio insistence and he was pissed.

Final Cut is the real movie.

The voiceovers don't bother me. They're a little corny but also pretty noir-ish.

The Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut is a much watch. It turns a D movie into an A movie.

Generally I like the Extended Editions of the LOTR movies for the additions but I actually like the Council of Elrond better in the theatrical version. I will watch both versions because I feel they both have things to offer.

The extended editions of the Hobbit movies were basically pointless.

Only see the Director's Cut of Dark City. The theatrical version gives away the whole twist at the very beginning.

Re: Theatrical Cut vs Director's Cut/Extended Edition

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I am always torn with the LOTR editions because the pacing is so much better in the theatrical versions (not talking about overall length of the movies, but the actual pacing and narrative push of how the scenes are strung together) but the EE's have so many good scenes that I don't want to do away with...

So true about 'Dark City.'

Also, I definitely prefer the Extended Edition of 'The Two Towers,' but I could take either version of the other two.

I love the extended versions of the LOTR films, but I can acknowledge that the theatrical versions are paced better. Sometimes the added scenes feel a bit awkwardly placed, but all in all I love the added scenes so much I don't care.

The Hobbit films... Well, I liked the extended versions less, but there were a few nice scenes added, so I don't begrudge their existence.

I liked the Theatrical cut of Amadeus better than the Director's.

Seconded HARD. The main additiona was the Constanza and Salieri scene, right? Which, okay, I guess it was in the play, but ... what did it add but tits? We already knew she'd do anything for her husband; we already knew that Salieri wasn't going to help him at all (and in fact was planning on destroying him to spite God).

It's not quite the same thing, but for S1 of Sherlock, I preferred the versions that ran on PBS. I thought they were tighter, for lack of a better word. IIRC, they only cut maybe one short scene in each ep, but they would also trim bits out of other scenes where no one was talking or doing anything you had to see. The first time I saw the original cuts on DVD it felt kind of unnecessarily slow - not in a short attention span way, but in a "Why did we need those extra three seconds of John walking down the street at the beginning of this scene, anyway?" kind of way.

There's two reasons I prefer the theatrical cut of Alien over the Director's cut. One: The pacing is better (though I don't mind the slower burn) and two, it doesn't have that stupid turning-into-eggs scene which I can't stand.

I think I tend to quite like extended editions, I love the LoTR ones a lot and it's pretty much the only way I watch the films these days. And I like the Alien+Aliens and even the A-Team extended versions too.

Little Shop of Horrors, the Director's Cut all the way.

1) The song is awesome, and so is the stuff going on behind it.
2) For god's sake, if you're going to do a happy ending COMMIT to a happy ending. The ridiculous 'The end...or is it?!' thing with the Audrey II cutting in the front yard kills the happy ending, but it's a weak-ass version of the unhappy one.

The decision to cut When Love Is Gone from A Muppet Christmas Carol was a travesty that ruins the emotional flow of the movie. Extended edition only in this household.

CE3K

The original version, which ended with him walking into the ship (without showing the inside).

I loved that the sense of wonder and mystery and "the unknown" was preserved. Showing the inside is just... well, for me I liked it better when it was left to our imagination.

Of the ones I've seen? Always, ALWAYS the Director's Cut.

Usually because what they cut from the Theatrical MAKES NO SENSE AND CAUSES THINGS TO NOT MAKE SENSE.

Aliens, The Abyss, Superman II

(Anonymous) 2016-04-26 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Aliens - I like both, but prefer the director's as it adds more character development.
The Abyss - again, I like both, but prefer the director's as it adds more to the plot and ups the stakes.
Superman II - definitely the director's cut - it's just a better movie.
