The usual argument for/against someone in particular not being allowed to use it (as opposed to the argument that *no one* should be allowed to use it) is usually based on whether or not the slur is used against them.

Bi women and lesbians have the word used against them as a slur, so if you agree with the above logic, they have the right.

Do they? I've never heard anyone call a woman a faggot. Dyke, yes. Faggot, no.

I've seen it happen, and I've seen enough bi and gay women report it happening to know it's a thing.

It may not be the commonest slur used against them, but it is used.

I'm a lesbian and I've been called a fag before, but yeah, honestly - I don't think it's as impacting and oppressive to me as it is to queer men. For me, dyke sounds a lot rougher.

When they called you a fag, they did realise you were a woman and not think you were a transwoman? Because that mistake has been made.

Before I came out, the most common slurs I got were faggot and shemale.

Well I'm very femme and present stereotypically feminine, so I don't think I'd be mistaken for trans by a homophobic person? Unless it was like a layered homophobic insult meant to say I "look mannish" or something as well? Either way, whatever. I could definitely see why the word "fag" would be more impacting to a trans woman though in the same way it'd be more impacting to a gay man. (or a straight man for that matter, it's a masculinity-attacking word)

When used on a trans woman, isn't it an masculinity assigning insult instead of masculinity detracting one?

Sure. But when I say it's "masculinity-targeting", take that how you will. To a trans woman, it's an insult that tells them they are sissy men, and to non-trans men, it tells them they are sissy men.

But *sissy* men and sissy *men* are two very different concepts, even from the abusers point of view. The shift in emphasis is an important distinction.

The shift in emphasis explains why it's being used as an insult, but it's still a slur and still degrading. Why would it mean one group has less right to reclaim it?

If gay men are reclaiming it then they are using its affirmation of still being men as the point of it. That means it is a double insult for trans-women. An insult from the original bigots, and now an insult for their fellow LGBT spectrum campaigners. And vice versa, since if trans women reclaimed it then it is an affirmation of a lack of masculinity which is an insult to the gay men.

That is why you got to be careful about reclaiming, because you will probably really only be compounding the insult and stereotype most of the time. It is better to fight for an abolition of a term than to fight to "reclaim" it.

So do straight guys, by other straight guys who think they're too girly. Or who just don't like them. And it's a generic insult on 4chan. I don't think having it used against you is quite all that matters in whether you get to use it.

It's used as a degrading way to say "gay guy" though. Sort of like the word "queer" has been reclaimed; it could be used as an insult to someone who is actually not queer but that doesn't mean that person should use it themselves.

I've been called faggot, and I'm a female and pan. The last time, I almost decked the guy...

Nonetheless, I wouldn't use it unless describing a bundle of sticks in the UK.
