Do bisexual woman have the right to use the word faggot?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Honest question.

The usual argument for/against someone in particular not being allowed to use it (as opposed to the argument that *no one* should be allowed to use it) is usually based on whether or not the slur is used against them.

Bi women and lesbians have the word used against them as a slur, so if you agree with the above logic, they have the right.

Do they? I've never heard anyone call a woman a faggot. Dyke, yes. Faggot, no.

So do straight guys, by other straight guys who think they're too girly. Or who just don't like them. And it's a generic insult on 4chan. I don't think having it used against you is quite all that matters in whether you get to use it.

I've been called faggot, and I'm a female and pan. The last time, I almost decked the guy...

Nonetheless, I wouldn't use it unless describing a bundle of sticks in the UK.

To a friend with whom you established a certain derogatory language being okay? Yes. In a sexual situation where someone gets off on being called names? Sure, if pre-negotiated.

I'd say to a stranger it's pretty inappropriate and nasty no matter what your sexuality is. To a friend who might not be okay with it...maybe more so even.

Of course, everyone has the right to say the word. No one is not allowed, but the consequences may differ depending on to whom they are speaking and what exactly they say.

If you meant something else, you'll have to explain.

You're just lucky to be afforded the protection of the LGBT Label. Don't fucking push it.

I bet this is OP replying to themselves.

You will deny it of course.

No more than gay or bi men have the right to use the word dyke.

Re: Do bisexual woman have the right to use the word faggot?

I'm a lesbian and honestly, what's the purpose of "reclaiming" it? I think it's a fun word in gay porn, and sort of tongue-in-cheek, fine. But someone who tries to "reclaim" it just sounds like they're trying too hard, tbh.

Anyway, to me, it depends. I might be a little annoyed if a bi person in a heterosexual relationship insists on using it (I mean, calling other queer people that) because they aren't currently in a position where they are facing oppression for their relationship. But hey, that's up to them. I mostly think they'll sound dumb using it no matter what their orientation is.

People shouldn't really use slurs! Especially slurs that DON'T APPLY TO THEM

Can a bi woman talking to her gay dude friend who calls himself faggy and is okay with her calling him faggy him faggy?
I MEAN SURE
Are there other scenarios where it's possible? SURE

But as a general rule she should be careful with a word that has an extremely violent, hateful and painful history and is STILL USED THAT WAY!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone has the right to use that word.

Do they have the right to use it in a derogatory manner meant to demean, shame and abuse gay people?

I think that's the question you ought to be asking.

Re: Do bisexual woman have the right to use the word faggot?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I know it's not super popular, but I've always been of the opinion that women are so far down the social ladder, so much further down than gay men, that even a straight woman using the word "faggot" is inherently punching up.

Of course I'd never use the word because punching, even punching up, is still punching. but I think a woman using that term is not inherently a slur or a hateful act, or anything nearly as bad as a gay man using the word Cunt, for example.

Re: Do bisexual woman have the right to use the word faggot?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
As a lesbian I wouldn't use it and I wouldn't be comfortable with bi women using it.

I'm a faggy bi man (sorta) and I'm a bit worn out from all this semantic bullshit about who can use which word with which definition. Howabout those bathroom bills which are used as an excuse to harass gender-nonconforming peeps? Howabout the religious liberty bills which, beyond the stupid fucking cake thing, further narrows our access to health care? Howabout HIV and meningitis? Howabout the epidemic of suicide in our younger members? How about safe schools? (And I don't mean "no trump" I mean peer violence and harassment.)

Ehhhh gonna say probably not. Seems like it's not quite right to me.

Re: Do bisexual woman have the right to use the word faggot?

To refer to a bundle of wood? Yes.

To refer to a cigarette? Yes, but only if they're British.

To refer to a gay man? I'd say no if that man is a stranger, and I'm not sure why they'd want to use it then. However, if this is a "between friends" thing and he's cool with it, then I don't care.

Do gay men have the right to use the word dyke?

Re: Do bisexual woman have the right to use the word faggot?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
no, and gay men shouldn't use the word dyke and cis people shouldn't use the word tranny

the end

....I mean...maybe?

But I wouldn't. I am a bi woman and I just don't feel the need or any want to use it.

Sure, if it's used with love because you know a lot of faggots and would kill to defend them.
