Agreed that maybe you should see a therapist, since reading a book shouldn't have that kind of an affect on a person, but I'm confused by the, "Being female in society." as a reason for having a phobia of being raped.

Do people really wake up every day all, "I'm a woman, I'm sure someone today might try and rape me."?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if they spend a great deal of time on tumblr or in similar environments.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No. They may end up feeling that way is they suffer from anxiety, as the person who wrote the secret actually said.

Obviously, most women do not feel that way. Anxiety makes people think in ways that aren't normal, that's why it's a disorder.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we stop blaming everything on tumblr jesus christ.

Most of it is probably coming from the fact whenever someone being raped comes up in the news, there's always tons of people accusing the rape victim of lying or calling her a slut. Lol Bill Cosby and Stubenville anyone?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Those two aren't really equatable, considering the Cosby accusers waited decades, withdrew their claims, and then came back over ten years later. You have to admit that's incredibly suspicious and irrational.

Though even then it's far from something that only affects women. Male rape is treated as an acceptable joke in popular culture, and that's disgusting.

What is it with F!S getting mad at Tumblr for everything. Hahah, even people on reddit brag about how they're not glad to be women because as man they don't have to fear being raped. The fear of sexual assault being perpetuated by tumblr is a myth. This has even been prevalent in religious groups for several centuries ("don't entice a man or he'll rape you! Don't wear that skirt cause you'll be asking for it!")

Honestly, people like you sound like the types of idiots who believe people of color only started hating white people recently. Everyone with your mindset always believes these notions of fear or hatred only came about because of social justice being in pop culture.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if they know how the world works.

But it's less of a fear that we will be raped for being a woman, although we are at a significant risk of that, it's more about the fact that the world will attack us for being raped. That no-one will believe us, that police will interrogate us, That our families will hate us, and every man around us will call us liars. The rape is only the start if the suffering for women in our society.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
How can you live your life like that though? Like... I'm a woman and I've never gone out my door every morning thinking that something terrible would happen to me and I'd be punished for it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You do know that women have different experiences and veiwpoints then you right.

There's tons of factors that could lead someone to think that way, our shitty and biased society and media sure isn't helping.

People live their lives in all kinds of ways. I wish people would stop with the "you can't LIVE" when encountering an opinion they don't agree with.

For me, it's not that I necessarily expect terrible things to happen when I'm just going about my usual routine. But I place limitations on myself constantly, often without even realizing that I'm doing it.

As one example: a male friend told me that on one warm summer night he decided to sleep on the public beach, and I was shocked that that was something a person could just do. And then five seconds later it clicked why he was comfortable making that choice, while I wouldn't even dream of it. Most likely I'd be perfectly safe if I slept on the beach, but if I were raped in those circumstances, 90+% of people would say it was my fault for putting myself in that situation in the first place.

In some countries maybe, but I'm pretty sure OP is not from any of those countries and the only reason she has that fear is because of the scaremongering that's so common in certain sites.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm pretty sure the scare-mongering has been around long before certain sites.

Yanno. All those seminars they have in schools and colleges about how someone is probably going to rape you, for one. Those existed long before Tumblr and LJ.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the anxiety comes from the statistics on how many women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime, or not even needing those stats to feel unsafe because they know women who are victims?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but look at how high car accident statistics and plane crash statistics (and on the boring side, deaths caused by household accidents) are, and yet while there are a small percentage of people who have anxiety about flying or driving, etc, it's not nearly as high as the people who panic just because they're 'living while female' (though again, I don't know if these amounts are skewed online because people tend to congregate).

idk man, a lot of people are afraid of flying.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
The commonly repeated statistics or the factual statistics? At least in my country those are some VERY different numbers.

Enh, I'm a trans guy, but I actually see rape as a very normal part of my life, which I DID associate with my assigned gender.

Then again, I faced regular rape from the ages of five to nineteen, and was not the only victim in my family. I mean, with that many years, victims, perpetrators, and events, after a while, you DO kinda come to expect it. But I understand that I come from an unusual background and presumably that doesn't happen to most people.

For me, reading 'Speak' was oddly a numb experience. To me I guess it just seemed... I dunno. Normal.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry what you had to go through. I hope life is better to you now.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have a fairly severe anxiety disorder (to the point where it has had a major negative impact on my life) and I've never once been concerned about that. The worst thing that has ever happened to me in that regard is construction workers wolf-whistling at me as I walked by, but even that wasn't bad because it wasn't as if they were making any sort of physical advances on me.

I mean, they might, but no, I don't worry about it on the regular. To be honest the fact of it being so present in society means if I *did* worry about it I'd never talk to anyone or go outside.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"So present in society"? You're a lot more likely to get robbed or hit by a car than raped.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-05-15 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's true? Unless you're only talking about "scary man jumps out of bushes" rape, but that's a pretty small percentage of rapes

Saying "they might" in the way you did only reaffirms that fear for someone. And what do you mean by "so present in society?" Sexual assault happens, but you're sort of making it sound like everyone is going to get assaulted every time you turn around.
