Everybody seems to feel that way, which is a shame, because I genuinely really like it.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it too. Not so much the fic, though. I just don't feel a lot of H/G writers really get Harry or Ginny right.

Harry Potter books are shit at romance, news at eleven.

Seriously, as much as I ship all the canon pairings, there is nothing those books did WORSE than romance. 90% of every pairing happened off screen, only to be either vaguely referenced or thrown at you from nowhere later. (Looking at you, single mention of Fleur and Bill knowing each other before romance happened, and entirety of Tonks/Remus relationship) I have trouble reading HP fic too, because even though I like and ship the characters, there's nothing in the books that really sold me on it enough for me to seek it out.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Tonks/Remus was so out of left field for me. I can't even like it because it was totally WTF for me. And then Harry thinking she was in love with her cousin Sirius really threw me for a loop. I can accept Bill/Fleur because they are not close to Harry and I can see Harry not noticing their relationship at all since he wasn't there for their meeting or dating period. Whereas he spends a great deal of time with both Remus and Tonks. I think there would have been hints in the 5th book, like maybe Tonks flirting with Remus and him reacting to it or something.

I'm the opposite though because her poorly done attempts at romance made me want to read fics either to a)fix the issues (Ron/Hermione) or b) explain how the two characters got together (Fleur/Bill). If I'm satisfied with how canon does it I never look for fics.

I think there would have been hints in the 5th book, like maybe Tonks flirting with Remus and him reacting to it or something.

Actually, there were, or at least I thought so. In just about every other scene we see Remus in, Tonks is there. But she definitely went from "maybe there's something" to them being married with a kid. That was a leap, even though I loved them in fanon.

I actually liked Tonks/Remus, but holy hell was there no build up for that whatsoever. I get that we have a first person limited perspective, but that just makes things look bizarre.

I definitely hunt down fic if I'm satisfied, because if I'm satisfied I want MOOOOREEEE.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I remember being in fandom post GoF, after the one exchange between Flelur and Bill was her throwing a look his way at the Third Task (no hint of him even knowing of her existence) and people were writing fic about them getting married and shit and swearing they'd absolutely be a canon thing. I was all "wtf worst set up ever if that's true". And sure enough after two books of virtually no mention whatsoever let alone groundwork, they were getting married. Of course it came out of literally nowhere.

People were so proud of being able to correctly guess the future canon pairings based on "subtle cues" in the earlier books, then were somehow shocked that 99% of those pairings flatlined and were DOA for much of the audience. JKR wrote them the way she did most of her plot twists, but you can't Chekov's gun a canon ship, well-written romance needs actual groundwork and buildup.

It was easy to predict pairings because JKR tended to limit interaction between boys and girls to those who were going to hook up, unless it was plot relevant. So any background mention was pretty much a guarantee. The only ship that I think was pretty clear from the beginning was Ron/Hermione, and even that was awkwardly handled. Which would be fine, these are not romance books, but when every single relationship is handled badly, including the main characters, it colors your experience.

I've loved Harry/Ginny since I accidentally (but not really I was too impatient to wait for my parents to take me to the bookstore to get book 1 when my grandma accidentally got me book 2) read book 2 first when it came out. I spent years hoping they would get together and then the sixth book happened. I was so upset and angry with how poorly she wrote them and then shoving Ginny aside in the 7th book when I hoped the books would have given her a more prominent role. There was so much potential and then JK Rowling squandered it.

I still love the ship though. Probably because it was actually my first ship (as well as James/Lily and surprise I was also disappointed in what JK did with them but not as much) where I discovered fanfic and fanart. It's what got me into fandom. So I don't think I could ever hate it.

That being said there are some amazing fanworks out there that do Harry/Ginny justice some canon compliant and others AU versions of events after book 5. The fans have created some amazing stuff so I say check it out if you are interested, even just mildly. Pretty much any Harry/Ginny fanworks site has something worth reading and there are tons of recs. I'd rec fics but its been two years since I've read any fics so...I need a long break from HP fandom at the moment.

Oh is this Harry/Ginny? I figured it was James/Lily. I guess that's what happens when the author makes the MC look like his father and marry someone that looks like his mother...

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
da

OP's secret really could fit either couple, couldn't it?

I figured it was Ginny because Lily wasn't into Quidditch, and they both look like they're in spots gear.

Yeah. That shit is creepy. And then you have your MC name two of his kids after his own parents, and each of them looks a lot like their namesakes if the movies are anything to go by...

I'm exactly the same. I was really into Harry/Ginny... until it actually happened. But as others have mentioned, Rowling was crap at writing romance.
I wish that during book 7 instead of a lot of the camping out and stuff we'd seen more of the kids at Hogwarts, or that Ginny had gone with Harry, or something.

The romances in the series were uniformly horribly done, so I think a lot of people are in your boat - the elements that should make them like a ship is there, but the execution leaves them cold.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-06-08 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I just came for the fanart, I really like that style!

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry and Ginny? I don't mind them together and I'm a sucker for parallels (Lily x James) but for the protagonist and his future wife it felt extremely neglected. It's been years since I read the books but the only thing I remember is Ginny initially had a crush on Harry and Harry started liking her because she became popular and pretty as she grew up... I think?

It should have gotten the same or more attention than Hermione x Ron got.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought the parallels between the two, besides their looks, was that Ginny was more like James and Harry Lily.

I agree that there should have been a bit more build up. Sure it may have been real to life that Harry suddenly noticed her, but damn, at least have him acknowledge that Ginny was starting to look cute in books 4 or 5 or something.

I liked the idea of Harry/Ginny a lot. Not my favorite Harry pairing, but I did like it. I hated how it happened in the book. I have enjoyed it in a few fics. My problem, though, is that I really hate Ron/Hermione. There has never been a fic that makes the pairing work for me. And there are so few Harry/Ginny fics that don't also have Ron/Hermione. I'd love to read more Harry/Ginny, but it is all but impossible to find ones that don't have Ron/Hermione there as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't get into it because of the horrible chest monster. It was so bad and got second-hand embarrassment from it.

Also, Ginny became a brat around the fifth book which apparently we were supposed to find endearing??

TBH I wasn't into Harry with anyone either (although Cho got done dirty) I supported Harry/death or Harry/foreveralone.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I literally can't tell if this is referring to James/Lily or Harry/Ginny.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Ok I'm guessing Harry/Ginny from the thread. Carry on.

idk about "fell flat", but it didn't make me particularly excited for it.

I ship it vaguely. I'm not really invested in it. I care a lot more about Ron/Hermione (don't care how well/badly it was done in the books, I've been shipping them since I was 10 and still love them together)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about both Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione. I've been shipping them for so long and well before the books ever got to the actual romance that how they were written in the books doesn't change the fact that I ship them a lot. That's what fanfics are for anyway.

The fact that it is terribly written is exactly why I can't ship it. In fact I do feel you on the mental block, as there's been a few times that a fic looks like it might be good bu-ut... I just can't get into it.
