Brexit fallout..Tw: racism, xenophobia and general awfulness (but I sort of wanted to talk about it)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-06-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So, this came across my Facebook today:

(Should be a public album, I think)

I'm honestly just...appalled? My best friend was shaking over reading this. I didn't think it would escalate like this, but some of these things border on basically pre-WWII situations. I actually had to stop reading at people being called "vermin". Basically, people are using Brexit as an excuse to legitimize their racism and xenophobia openly. It's awful, and it's not the UK I remember from few years back :(.

I feel something was irrevocably broken, and stuff is going to hell.

Today is not a day I feel good at humanity.

I really hope that people realise that most of us aren't like that. Not even all the Leave voters are like that. It's a small but poisonous and vocal minority.

Every I've spoken to who voted Remain are gutted. Most of us really value everyone from the EU and the rest of the world who live and work in the UK. :( We - I can't believe this is happening to my country.

I dunno. From everything I've heard -- including testimonials from Brit friends -- this isn't as small a minority as some people would like. Every last xenophobe in the country has been emboldened. It's like how Donald Trump has revealed all the racists and misogynists in the US for what they are.

I know not all of you are..I'm just shocked there is enough of a critical mass for this to happen.

I wish I was surprised. This is an ugly, vocal group.

That behaviour is awful and disgusting and I can't believe that they're saying those things to real human beings, like what the hell?? I just feel so sorry for anyone from Europe(and other countries since these idiots don't seem to even understand that Asian isn't European) who's living here at the moment because you guys are seeing the worst of my country and it is an ugly, ugly place.

Like I know racism isn't gone here(I've met enough racist assholes to think that, but I thought maybe they were in the minority more?), but I never thought it was this bad.

I sort of feel like this...legitimizes them, in a way? Or at least in their own opinion. Like the quiet racists suddenly feel they can act on it, if that makes sense.

Yeah, this was making the rounds last night. Absolutely infuriating. What galled me was how much of it there was.

Just puts the upcoming US election into perspective -- Trump has to lose.

I'm sure that if he doesn't, you'll see similar behavior.

If you want a truly regressive nation try Saudi Arabia. The way they treat Ethiopians in particular is disgusting.

It's a collection of incidents in the wake of Brexit.

Examples:

A father and son being beaten unconscious, with potentially permanent damage.

Man with t-Shirt: Yes, we won! Now send them back.

Cards put into Polish people's letter boxes: "Leve the EU, no more Polish vermin"

A Muslim girl being verbally harassed by guys shouting "Get out, we voted to leave".

People hanging banners outside of mosques.

"EU rules don't apply in the UK all polish fuck off and take the rest with you"

Immigrant children being verbally abused by adults in the street.

Eastern Europeas being banned from public transport by other passengers.

"I bet the sand people are crapping themselves right now".

People chanting "make Britain White again"

etc.

The left has shit all over white people, and now they act surprised when the pot boils over.

You have created this problem. Enjoy!

I think the people being racist are the ones most responsible for the racism. We can talk about other political problems but let's not make excuses for the people who are, in fact, being horrible and racist.

I'm not even surprised... so many racist assholes are just held back by what they consider acceptable behavior. Once the seal's broken, the crud comes spilling out.

Is that the 100+ and counting album of ppl being horrible racists? I only made it to the 20 somethings.

Makes me wonder what Australia will be like if marriage equality goes to a public vote...

And also, I don't get why ppl would "protest vote" by putting their vote to the option they're against? How does that work? How do they know it's a protest vote??

I think protest voting in this case was more about the people supporting the issue, than about the issue itself. Remain was supported by most mainstream politicians from both major parties. People who were dissatisfied with the political leaders and feel like the system failed them, voted against whatever these people voted. Especially since Leave at least promised some kind of change. I think some people were so caught up in the idea that their votes don't matter that they at least wanted to express their frustrations.
