Shows that you feel were screwed over

(Anonymous) 2016-07-04 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
We've talked about shows that would've been good if it weren't for bad writing decisions, but what shows do you think were mostly screwed over, whether by fans, the network, other circumstances?

Can also apply to books, movies, etc.

Babylon 5 was screwed over by network execs who wouldn't say that the show would get a season 5, so season 4 was crammed with all the planned storyline and then they decided to give it a season 5 after all.

I always thought that Heroes got really screwed over by the 2007 writer's strike. It made for a such a weird season and nothing made sense because they were clearly trying to start new storylines while also realizing "oh fuck, we only have 13 episodes."

Which isn't to say it still might not have gone downhill. But the writer's strike might have hastened it.

Carnivale

One of the most interesting shows you'll ever see. Excellent cast, great writing! Cancelled on one hell of a cliffhanger.

Keen Eddie, Firefly - all the other Fox shows that were shown out of order.

- What inspired this post was that I've been rewatching the sitcom Happy Endings, and honestly, it had a lot of potential. I think not knowing whether or not they were going to get more seasons and even thinking they were cancelled after the first made the writing shaky.

- I also think the writer's strike in did a lot of damage to many shows, including Heroes and Ugly Betty. It especially didn't help that writers and directors changed.

I also think the writer's strike made reality TV more popular, which as in turn made it harder for non-reality TV shows to stay on, because now networks want to make room for them. They were already around of course, The Real World and The Osbournes and The Apprentice, among other things, but the writer's strike happened and they needed something to replace those shows with..

Supernatural

(Anonymous) 2016-07-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The writer's strike screwed up the Sam-rescues-Dean plotline. Their relationship always felt massively unbalanced after that to me. Like Sam didn't come through for Dean when Dean had gone to hell for him.

The Finder was a show that I really loved and that had a lot of potential, but there were two major things that I feel really screwed it over.

1: The show played up the connection to Bones way, way more than it had to. It wasn't really a spinoff of Bones in any meaningful sense, and the shows were way different - I don't even like Bones that much but I loved The Finder. So the audience of Bones fans who would turn in because it was a spin-off wouldn't necessarily like it. But tying it so closely to Bones, I think, made it a lot less likely for non-Bones fans to watch it.

2: The show aired its episodes completely out of order. Partly, this is related to the first: the networks moved up a bunch of episodes because they were more connected to Bones. But it was really terrible for the show, which had both ongoing emotional relationships between characters, and also a progressive shift in tone as the season went on so that the show started goofy and light and then wound up getting pretty dark. So airing it out of order made everything confusing and kind of random.

Of course, in the end, it didn't matter - Michael Clarke Duncan passed away right after the first season and the show wouldn't have worked without him. But still. So much potential.

Carnivale! Season one is fucking amazing. It's unusual, original, and hints at an extremely deep mythology. It takes risks. Most of all, it has fantastic depth: I love how Brother Justin has this darkness within him, but he's struggling with it and even attempts to do "good" with it, like what he does to that pedophile guy. That's interesting and compelling tv, and of course Clancy Brown fucking sells it.

And then they get told to compress an arc that should have developed over S2 and 3 into just S2. And so the pacing gets even weirder, the characterizations get flatter, good is good and evil is evil, and there's too much exposition to cram in because there's no time otherwise. Certain storylines are abruptly dropped or get little attention. Things are rushed to a resolution, but they also have to leave it open-ended enough in case the show does get renewed. Which they didn't.

Carnivale is a major "what could have been" for me.

There was a weird case with a show called Drive years ago. I only remember Fox showing four episodes, I think, at weird times during the summer off-season and then that was the end of it. It was like they didn't actually want people to watch it. Do they just have a grudge against Nathan Fillion?

Y'all know I would say this buuut

Danny Phantom

So much would have improved it if it was given a longer run to work out everything it tried to do in season 3's 13 or 15 episodes.

(and certain characters- like Dani Phantom- could have been given more of a chance to shine and get some job in the story. And Danny/Sam MIGHT have actually been a halfway functional relationship)

I'm glad they love Star Vs. and Gravity Falls and let them continue or end naturally...but FFS, I'm still bitter about Motorcity and RC9GN.

Also, Cartoon Network and GLTAS

Miss Guided. It was such a cute show , but they kept on changing time slots.

Also The Secret Circle. The plot was really starting to get interesting toward the end of S1. They were going to do Cassie/Jake in S2. I still don't know why it was canceled when it did pretty well in the ratings (for a CW show).

Gargoyles. I still don't know what they were thinking when they decided to start the atrocity called Goliath Chronicles.

Symbionic Titan. It got screwed over because it didn't have enough merchandise connected to the show.

Almost Human--network fucked 'em over. I think it was getting decent ratings, but c'mon. This was the show that finally put me off ever watching the first season of anything on Fox. Cus they screwed me over with Alcatraz, cancelling it after the first season as well.

And Longmire got screwed over by A&E cus the show didn't "fit" the network anymore and they left it on a huge mother fucking cliff hanger. Thankfully, Netflix picked it up--and has continued with it. Yay.

Everything Cartoon Network touches.

That's why they turned what used to be some of their flagship shows into shitshows.

That's why they hardly show SU or Adventure Time nowadays.

It's why Hasbro Studios would be better off if they wouldn't trust CN with Transformers cartoons.

Just...yeah, I'm that person who has a hateboner for CN.

HBO's Rome and Deadwood (and I agree on Carnivale, too)! I was enjoying the hell out of Deadwood, and then it just ended. I know there was talk about a movie to tie up loose ends, but it's been too long now to be done.

And Rome is one of my absolute favorites. When HBO decided to axe it, it was when people had just found the show, the ratings were good, and the writing was really good. When the show runners knew they were getting cancelled, they piled way too much in the end of the series just to finish story lines. I rewatch the series every year, and it always makes me mad that the stories were truncated. And that I didn't get to see more Vorenus and Pullo!

Dead Like Me
Forever
Second Chance
Selfie

These come to mind first. I really think that these would have done better with a little tweaking and patience.

As far as falling victim to bad writing or choices, the prime example has to be Quantum Leap. It was going well and there was a huge reveal that completely killed audience sympathy and interest. IMO, that one decision sounded the show's death knell for the following and final season.

I know it doesn't get much respect on fs, but I think Sleepy Hollow could've been a much better show if they'd:

1. Done something more with Katrina from the beginning. Poor woman spent most of her time trapped in limbo, which was boring and made fans tire of her non contributions to the plot. Then they decided to make her evil, but in a pointless way. Waste of a character.

2. Realized that the Ichabod/Abbie relationship (note that I didn't say romance) was a key part of the show and not tried to sideline Abbie in season 3.

3. Left out Indiana Bro. His role contributed nothing that Jenny couldn't have done, she'd already been established as the exoert in occult objects. They should've brought both her AND Joe into more episodes sooner.

4. Honestly they should've scrapped most of season 2. Henry, the headless horseman's back story, the weird one off angel guy, all that nonsense.

I liked the first season, but it went off the goddamn rails fast. They should have kept the strong Roman/Peter partnership, it was the best part of the show even if you don't ship them. So much unexplored potential for the whole werewolf vs. upir thing as Roman figures out who and what he is. They sort of drop the whole Shelly plot... No fucking way would Roman just NOT tear the place apart looking for her.

I don't even want to talk about the disaster of an ending. :(
