OP that's dumb as hell. Just sayin'.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find an American with Irish background who didn't have some English in them too.

Oh for the love of mud. Seriously, OP? Go to a gig and ask the band if they want to turn away your CD or teeshirt money. Music is there for everyone to enjoy.

If yo plan on liking Irish (or, in this case, Irish - American) music, please do so, by all means - daft identity politics does not apply and all are welcome to listen, learn and participate.

Please note that though there are many Irish Americans, very few of whom have any recent family connection with Ireland at all.

Most celebrate their ancestry in a non-hostile way, but a vocal minority frequently engage in absurd, outdated anti-English rhetoric as a means of romanicising past conflicts of which they have no direct experience. They often have a wholly distorted idea of what contemporary Irish life is like.

In actual Ireland, thousands of British people live, work and visit the country and are very welcome. Likewise, nearly half a million Irish citizen live and work in the UK. Many people have joint citizenship or have extended family in the other country. Tension theses days is no more serious than sporting rivalry (and we have a joint rugby squad, the Lions, for some international competitions). If any American Plastic Paddy were to give you grief over liking an Irish American band, be assured that he would be talking through his arse so if that happens, tell whoever it is to get stuffed.

Plus, if you're Norwegian, Viking ancestry is commonplace in Ireland and Britain. Many cities, including Dublin, were founded by Vikings.

I've moved to another part of my country and now I root for the local sports team and have joined clubs and activities here. Am I appropriating this part of the country now? Oh, and I have learned to like Sashimi? Am I appropriating Japan? And I like Mars bars: there goes USA! HAHA! World domination! ALL MINE!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
But Irish are white people, so they don't count, right?

Pppffffftt no anon, that's not how appropriation works at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You're allowed to like music. The band writes what they do because they want people to hear it.

In my experience, pretty much the only thing that annoys Irish-Americans and their Irish relatives is how St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in the US. Most of it is cheesy in an okay way, but using "everyone is Irish today" as an excuse to get blackout drunk and fight isn't. Like whatever music you like. That isn't a big deal.

Can we just get over the concept of "appropriation" already?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Good lord! Anyone can like Irish music. If this London Muslim Imam can learn sean nós singing and even win prizes for it at the Feis Ceoil, then you can like some shamrock-bedecked LA punk band

As someone of Irish descent (though admittedly not as much as my German ancestry) you're fretting over nothing.

Get off of Tumblr and enjoy the fucking music that you want to. Goddamn.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-07-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
lol what the fuck

Who cares? I have no Irish in me and I enjoy the hell out of the stuff I've heard from them (I really like Tobacco Island).

(Anonymous) 2016-07-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Music is the one language that speaks to all people. Doesn't matter your blood, songs have something each person understands.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
If you're genuinely worried about this, you spend too much time on the internet. Please go outside.

Are you dressing up as St. Patrick and doing a dramatic re-enactment while listening?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-11 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
No? Then you're fine.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-11 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between 'appreciation' and 'appropriation'. What you are doing is appreciating the music, and that's all good. I myself like Irish folk songs and old celtic music and have not a bit of Irish in me, just as I like a lot of bollywood music and I'm a white british woman :) You don't have to be part of the thing to enjoy it!! :)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-11 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
As a general rule, if you're purchasing something from that culture then it is not appropriation. Going to Japan and eating Japanese food is not appropriating.

Think of appropriation like plagiarism. If you go out and buy a photography book then you haven't stolen anything. If you go on Google, grab a photo, turn it into your photography teacher and say "I took this picture." then you're appropriating their photo for your own benefit.

So just don't go writing down the lyrics to the songs and go "I totally made this myself. This is my poem. I wrote it."
