As for male examples, the one that comes to my mind immediately is Eragon, which I think the main difference for him is that he's the main character. Either way, the script tends to treat these characters differently. Men, for example, tend to get rewarded, while women are more often to get a moral about "of course you're right, but tone it down a little."

But then OUaT has the worst morality scale I've ever seen. I love how they act like it's unthinkable for Snow White to slap Geppetto after discovering his own self-interest in keeping Pinocchio safe is the reason Emma grew up abandoned. And then she had to apologize for doing it. Hahahah, WHAT?!

That moral compass character doesn't always have to be a woman, but it's lazier to write because of the nagging wife stereotype [see: Skyler in Breaking Bad (although she subverts the trope), what'sherface in TWD, etc].

(Anonymous) 2016-07-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)The whole story is litterally about him thinking he's the only one with a correct moral compass and trying to get away with killing people.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)It's actually fascinating how much Cameron and Sara aren't characters, just loudest voice tropes.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)That was one of my big problems with CSI Miami. Calleigh and Delko both became so self righteous, and worse, the narrative always supported them. The whole team had their moments but those two were the worst. I absolutely hated it.
I think a lot of procedurals fall into this trap, but there are usually one or two characters who stand out in particular.

What about, oh, HOUSE????????????

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 07:31 am (UTC)(link)Charles Xavier anyone? Obi-Wan Kenobi? The Winchesters? Batman?
Yeah okay.
Christopher Nolan's Batman does horribly sketchy immoral shit while preaching about The Right Thing To Do the whole time for all three movies and doing shit that basically destroys the city he vowed to protect.
Sam and Dean Winchester are HUGELY guilty of this. Oh we have to do whats right! We have to go by an ethical compass! Protect humans - unless they are killers! Kill monsters - unless they are nice! So really the morality that counts is our personal judgement on a case by case basis wherein we the Winchesters are judge jury and executioners but its whats RIGHT. Cosmically.
And do not get me started on Charles Xavier. You have the power to go into every major government on earth and erase all discriminatory laws and you wont do it because of your ethics and morals, but you'll go into the minds of friends and students and look at their memories and sometimes erase them? Also you claim to be a pacifist but you've got an army OF PEOPLE YOU'VE BASICALLY BEEN GROOMING SINCE THEY WERE CHILDREN TO BE WEAPONS but you give Erik a hard time for scooping justifiably angry adults off the streets? And you're the moral center of the universe(Granted I'm working mostly with movie universe Charles but still). That doesn't seem quite right.
