Are you a fandom snob about anything?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Are you?

And even if you don't want to be a snob about something, do you ever just feel the urge to go "but that is TOTALLY WRONG" when you see a casual fan make a totally innocent mistake only hardcore fans would notice or care about?

Yes. When people whine about Don Draper sleeping around.

Like, buddy, you're missing the whole point. You're SUPPOSED to hate seeing him sleep around. His whole character is based on him being so self-loathing that he becomes a sex addict. It's not "bad writing" at all! It's literally the point the writers are trying to make!

... WTF? Yeah, talk about missing the point.

Along those lines, people who refer to Joan as the office slut, and talk about how she "kept her job on her back." Well, it's not like there were too many options for a single mother back then. God, people.

And it's not like she did it by choice either! I think people forget that this is the 50s and 60s, so life is going to be a lot grittier.

My pet thing is Mairon being called Sauron by himself or Melkor or anyone in Angband/Utumno/Mordor in any fic set before Numenor. Yes, the Silmarillion doesn't actually mention Mairon's name. But other bits of Tolkien make clear he didn't take Sauron on as his name until after Numenor, though others called him that before. Same goes for Melkor being called Morgoth by Mairon or anyone in Angband or Utumno.

While Sauron is less of an issue for me, I definitely agree about Morgoth.

Thing is, that name is something Fëanor invented and practically everyone in Beleriand who stood against Melkor adopted. I kinda find it hard to imagine that Melkor's own people would go around calling him "Great Enemy of the World" to his face.

I don't know if it's fandom per se because I'm not in the fandom anymore (even if there is one these days) but I'd say I was that way the most about Death Note. Mainly because it's a series that tends to invoke fairly passionate opinions anyway, but also because I personally think a lot of common interpretations are objectively wrong. Definitely got those snobby urges back in the day.

I respect someone's decision to not read source material if the fandom is based on a book. Or play source material if it's based on a video game. Not everyone has the time or funds for that.

I lose all respect if they don't even realize it was based on previous source material. This is the age of the internet! You should know these things!

Re: Are you a fandom snob about anything?

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-07-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! This is it for me. Either those who don't realize it is an adaption or those who have actually read all the material and still make major mistakes. Like, don't read the books? No problem with that. Movie only fics are fine. Writing book-based fics and getting things wrong (especially if you are throwing in movie things without telling us)? Then I'm annoyed.

Yep. I'm always mad when someone doesn't decide they need to do any research.

You always need to do research. Unless you know your material 100%, look it up.

It bugs me when people say they're fans of something but don't know the names of the characters. I don't mean not knowing how to spell them or not knowing a character's full name vs a nickname or anything. I mean calling them "the mom" and "that tall guy" and things like that.

It's petty, but in my defense it only annoys me when they make a big deal about how much they like the thing.

Some people are just terrible with names. My mum occasionally forgets the name of the main character of her favourite show - it doesn't mean she likes it any less, she just has a mind like a sieve for names.

I get agitated when it's obvious someone didn't do their research about a specific area.

Such as saying how long it will take to get from point A to Point B and it being very unrealistic.

Or specific food stores being called out that don't exist in that region of the country.

Yeah, like one might get away with mentioning Costco in a fic set in Australia, IF it's set on the Gold Coast, but not Walmart.

(This is just and example - and yes, there's a Costco on the Gold Coast somewhere.)

There's a few in NSW and Victoria too.

I'm an SF/F snob, lol. Media fandom thinking it's the first or the only manifestation of fandom gets on my nerves. (See: anyone who thinks fandom was invented by/for shippers and fanfic writers.)

I thought I was ridiculously easy-going about this, and about mistakes people make when they don't know all the backstory, or the extended canon, or the source material, or whatever.

But then I realized, this is only when they make mistakes positively, like "ooooh how about this cool idea that makes no sense in canon but is still cool and enthusiastic and fun?" THAT is fine. But I absolutely cannot abide it when people invent a headcanon, then bash a character solely on the basis of that headcanon, without realizing that their headcanon goes totally counter to established canon.

Like that time someone wrote this tooth-grinding smarmy essay about how Galadriel is a horrible person for going to Valinor and "abandoning" the Lothlorien elves "without protection," because the fan believed that the Lothlorien elves can't go to Valinor/the Valar hate all non-Noldor and Sindar elves.

Dude, if you "believe" Lothlorien elves can't go to Valinor without checking to see if this is actually the case, IDGAF. Tolkien is fucking complicated and it's ridiculous to scoff at anyone for being bamboozled and confused by his reams and reams of scattered ideas.

But if you decide to BASH a character on the basis of stuff you just made up inside your head without making absolutely sure you know what the fuck you are talking about, sorry but I will immediately blacklist your name forever. Character bashing is my fandom berserk button.

*Facepalm* That just makes me laugh, the idea the that any Elves would be restricted from going to Valinor!

Aside from that ridiculousness, what did that person think Galadriel needed to protect them from? Sauron was gone (or at least powerless). Also, how did they expect her to keep protecting them? The power she was using was her Ring, which lost it's power when the One Ring was destroyed.

I'm a source material snob. I don't care if the author said it in an interview, or if the approved adaption changed it. If it's not in the source material, it's not canon.

I kind of get this way about Transformers. I won't mention it outloud, unless it's a REALLY glaring mistake, but somethings just make me go NO! NO! GET OUT OF MY FANDOM! or THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS, YOU DUMBASS!

If you even reblog a fic where Sam calls Dean "De" or something similar, I will silently judge you.

I had a friend in high school who, in addition to seeing the movies, had only ever read Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

(Oh, and she conflates homosexuality with pedophilia because the post-text reveal that Dumbledore is gay is something she commented on saying it made her uncomfortable that he's around Harry as a young child.)

Idk about snobbiness, her business is her business, but I personally don't understand how you can just pick up a book in a series starting with 6. Like, what is the appeal of doing that, even? (IIRC, I think she said that, having seen the movies, she picked up 6 and 7 and read them before those movies were released, but I still...it doesn't really make sense to me.)

I'm a HUMONGOUS Beatles fan who really dislikes most other artists' attempts to cover their songs (there are a few I like but it's a very short list). If that makes me a snob I guess I'm a snob.
