Which Republican arguments are we talking about? Frankly, social conservatism can get all the trashing in the world and I'll find it difficult to feel bad.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
i think OP means republicans as in how people who are republicans are characterized, since they stated they disagree with the arguments they make

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No offense, but... you kind of proved OP's point.

There are Republicans who aren't socially conservative.

Eh. Partisan sorting. What are you going to do, you know?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda get this, in the way that if there's going to be arguing no matter what, I'd rather see arguments with real people instead of one side ranting about a strawman of the other. The strawman versions are always more extreme, like, why even argue if you're going to make out your opponent to be an idiot to begin with and obviously you're going to win since you're making up both sides and it just seems exhausting

Real people bring more nuance too

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It is way, way, WAY more exhausting to argue with real people. Trust me on this one. Especially when you know for a fact that you're never ever going to agree, either on the specific issues or on the underlying philosophical beliefs. And it takes serious time and labor to even get to the point where you can talk about the root disagreement. And it's only possible if it's an issue that both people are capable of having a detached conversation about. And if you're in a public forum, you have to deal with the chances of someone coming in and saying some insane inflammatory thing which shoots the whole conversation to shit. And then, even in the best case scenario, you really have to spend mental effort to really see things from the other person's point of view and seriously entertain a world-view other than your own, which is actually something that takes substantial mental effort and that most people are extremely not good at.

It sucks, basically. Everything sucks.

Wish I could help you, but Trump's antics have convinced me that the GOP is beyond saving, and I am in the process of leaving the party.

Though yeah, fandom tends to be more left-leaning. I've read some stats saying that conservatives tend to prefer reality TV to scripted TV, so there might be a self-selecting bias (though I guess reality shows have their own fandoms). Don't know how legitimate this is, however.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't mind my asking, why did you join? What were they doing before to make you stick with them?

You're not the only republican I see abandoning the party.

A lot of the things I want from fiction are actively opposed by a certain segment of the population, and while that segment isn't completely Republican, there's a lot of overlap. For instance, I have seen two works of fiction in which a character considers getting an abortion and then actually gets one, and I would love to see a third at some point in the future.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Situations like that are why I roll my eyes when people talk about the liberal media and its agenda. Not that liberals are pro-abortion, either, but just the way situations like that get handled and the tone that surrounds them. (And just how often one outcome occurs over the alternative.)

Slight tangent, but omg, your anecdote reminded me of how I was looking for something online about Jessica Jones a few months back and accidentally found an article from some conservative site that was SO OFFENDED by the inclusion of an abortion in it. It might still be online, I don't know, but it was hilarious. (Meanwhile, I love that the show actually went through with it.)

A-FUCKING-MEN

I'm sick of the echo chamber.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That presumes there are Republicans who exist who can provide rational arguments. :X Most of the Republican platform seems to be founded in truthiness reactive feelings rather than any kind of evidence that would lend itself to reasoned debate.

I'm only slightly kidding. But yes, I would love that, too! Rational, thoughtful conservatives -- how intriguing!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Try meeting Log Cabin Republicans. Few of them are friends of mine and they're pretty cool.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm way, way left of center but I work in local government and there are Republicans there who are thoughtful, responsible people - generally socially libertarian and economically conservative. On a state or federal level (where broader issues of rights come into play) I would never, ever vote Republican, but there have been a few at the local level who were good people and worth supporting.

The comm went downhill years ago. It started out fairly ambitious with trying to post meta from a conservative perspective, but now it is 100% US Americans complaining about liberals. The fandom aspect is completely gone.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
There are more Republicans in fandom than you think. I generally keep my mouth shut about politics in fandom spaces, because I don't enjoy political arguments and I don't have the emotional energy to deal with people dogpiling me and calling me a horrible person, or making assumptions that I must hate women, gay people, minorities, etc. I hang out in some fandom spaces where simply saying that you're Republican or conservative, without even stating any political opinions or telling anyone else they're wrong, is sometimes enough to get an outpouring of hatred. It's exhausting and I don't want to deal with it.

My friends in real life are mostly liberal, but most of them are live and let live. We can respect each other while disagreeing on some things.

For the record, I am disgusted by Trump and would rather lose a major body part than vote for him. Sadly, I was outvoted in the primaries.

My dad and his parents were conservative republicans and my mom is a democrat... I think I'd prefer a circle jerk than deal with the vitriolic circular debates.

I know it's probably not very tolerant of me but I cannot deal with anyone who supports Trump. On my local news there was a guy who said he loves rednecks and Trump reminds him of a redneck so that's why he supports him... and other similar remarks. I have no respect for anyone who supports Trump.

However, to all the republicans who don't support Trump but are stuck with him you have my condolences. Hilary is not my first choice either, but this entire election is a nightmare.
