Re: What should I study next?

Always go with Latin, people associate being able to speak and read Latin (and to a lesser extent ancient greek) as being highly educated even if your other qualifications are lacking in any way. Someone with Latin fluency will always go on the shortlist for any job.

Really? That seems... really silly to me. It's kind of an outdated skill.

Yeah, but Latin is always prized by the top universities and colleges and you can never underestimate snobbery.

Really? Really?

I went to a fairly snobby school and I have to say the only situation they recommended Latin was if you wanted to either study other latin languages, or if you wanted to be a doctor (as the route words for many diseases and anatomy are based on latin).

Ah you went to a second class school then.

AYRT

LOLOL! That must be it. ;)

Second class schools deal with education to learn a profession. First class schools prepare one to lead. I trust you see the difference.

Given that the political class in my country are rich inbred drug and STI riddled idiots, I'm pretty happy with my second class school education.

Yeah, but you put the important part right at the top. Rich.

Latin is valued if you study science or law (!). Also, you know, history (and by extension, philosophy).

This doesn't make any sense, frankly. Where did you hear this?

Re: What should I study next?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
wtf i studied Latin for years (we have different types of high school in italy and one is mainly Latin/Ancient Greek studies) and can read/translate it but nobody ever prized my knowledge beside "oh cool Latin, yeah"

I should point out that I've studied Japanese and Korean in university and work as a waitress when I'm not unemployed (like now). ...the fuck did i do wrong with my life omg ??? SHOULD I MOVE TO AMERICA???

Latin is the cornerstone of a classical education. A classical education, or even part of one, is the gateway to a better life. Seems to me that you are not shopping your CV to the right people.

Re: What should I study next?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This is really not true, in general.

Re: What should I study next?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao should i tell this to one of my closest friend who has a laurea cum laude in Classical Studies (Latin AND Greek) and is currently working in a fast food chain? and she simply wants to be a teacher, not a lawyer!

idek man, Latin is just useless from where i come from. sure, you can impress your friends and read the scripts on all the cool monuments but at the end of the day you don't really use it if not for law or... church stuff i suppose?
also, simply stating that you studied latin in your CV doesn't mean anything usually. nobody SPEAKS it nowadays (even in Vatican they don't speak CLASSICAL Latin).

Re: What should I study next?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This might have been true in the 1960s (when Latin was often compulsory). It is not true today.

Today, on the American job hunt, a college education, no matter how ~classical~, is useless. Employers want people with hands-on experience and good references, not someone who has read Cicero. I am confident enough to say you are objectively wrong, unless you are going into a field that actively uses Lain.

I sometimes do hiring at my work and "speaks Latin" would be about as big a selling point as "plays the accordion." Interesting personal tidbit but irrelevant to the job. In fact, all else being equal, I'd probably hire the accordion player.

So, learn to play the accordion.

Wow, this is the opposite of what I was told in school. Are you from the 17th Century or something?
