The one and only reason to ever play a video game is to have fun. If you're not having fun playing a video game, you're doing it wrong, and so is anyone who thinks you need to do anything other than have fun when playing a video game.

I *never* play games on anything above the easiest possible setting. I'm here to experience the game and get a little satisfaction completing quests and beating up baddies. I'm not here to throw my controller at the screen while screaming in frustration (which actually happened last week on a tricky dungeon but that had more to do with the time of the month.)

Depends on how the easy mode is structured for me. There are games that shouldn't be played on easy because the challenge is the entire point or the easy mode cuts out entire sections or puzzles or unique gameplay mechanics, but there are plenty of others where who gives a shit because you're in it for the story or experience and the battles are tedious.

"Git gud" only really applies to Dark Souls. All else, play as you like.

I play video games on easy because, I'm not a power nerd. I just want to goof around for half an hour before going off to do some other stuff.

And I don't think that makes me or anyone else who does the same thing less of a gamer than the guy who lives and breathes video games and plays on hard times eleventy billion. That is how he enjoys his game, goofing around is how I enjoy mine.

I don't enjoy being pissed off 90% of the time I'm playing a game so I pretty much always play video games on easy-mode too, especially since what I typically care the most about is the story and I'm not about to struggle through the gameplay so I can enjoy that.

If the devs don't want you to play on easy, they shouldn't have an easy mode in the first place.

Play your way and to heck with the haters.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I choose the easier modes because I play to relax and I can't do that if I can't beat the game. I might go a level or two higher for games I've played a few times, though. I'm working my way up to death march on Witcher 3 but most other games I stay at medium or below.

Yep. You do you, have fun.

I totally play games on the easy setting too. Then again, I tend to play for story more than beating stuff up.

Once I play through on easy, I've been known to go back to the harder levels and see what changes but that's me. (and then there are things like Epic Mickey where the whole point is that things change depending on choices you make so why not play through again and see what happens and hey! you can still do that on easy mode! :) )

I play games with mods and cheats, because that makes games fun for me, particularly RPGs, where I'm there for the storyline far more than the gameplay.

You play Easy Mode if that's what makes games fun for you.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't pick easy mode if most games didn't have boring fighting. I like enemies that require you to come up with a strategy against them, but sadly the usual case is just "button mash until you win" and that gets tired fast.

As long as you are having fun you are not doing anything wrong. There really isn't a point in playing games at all if you aren't having fun as far as I'm concerned.

my best friend never really played video games and is now too intimidated to try and it makes me so sad!

video games are not about skill. the skill threshold is there to provide a challenge for the player which feels rewarding to overcome. it is there to serve the player, not to gate an experience to only the worthy.

if you get that reward from playing on easy you're not doing a single thing wrong. if you activate godmode to bypass the challenge entirely because you're interested in another aspect of the game that is perfectly fine too.

they're games, they're there for fun. unless people are depending on you (such as in multiplayer games where you play with random people), you could run circles in a game and you wouldn't be doing it wrong.

though you would be missing out, granted.

Aww it sounds like you're interacting with the wrong people if you're being mocked for the playing on the difficulty setting you're somfortable with.

Don't let anyone ruin it for you! People are asshats.

I've been playing games since I can remember, and I always go immediately for easy, why not? I want to enjoy playing and get to the end, I don't usually care about feeling "challenged". the only exception I'd say are games that exist purely to be replayed for higher scores.

I feel you, OP. There are some games I feel I'm really good at, and some games I would not be able to complete without an easy setting, but would enjoy getting the story or atmosphere of. Watching a Let's Play might be fun, but it's not the same kind of fun. Furthermore, just, like... by the nature of (my) disability, something I can do well one day I might not be able to do well another-- fine motor control and reflexes are a crapshoot, and how well I can focus depends on a lot of factors. But I grew up playing video games and I love them, and I don't plan on letting those things stop me from enjoying a hobby. Easy mode means I can enjoy a game on a bad day-- the kind of day when I want the distraction most.

It sucks that there are so many people who are vocal about being jerks over it, and man, I get not wanting to publicize being on easy mode on anything, but even when it's not a question of skill or ability, like... a lot of gamers are busy adults with many things to do, so I feel like it really shouldn't be stigmatized if some people just want to be able to cruise through a game without wasting time/increasing frustration, like... yeah, hobbies are supposed to be fun.

I like the games that call it "story mode" instead. It's more reflective of why I game. So in my head "easy" is always "story mode" now, and I get to feel superior because my interest is artistic compared to mere button mashers.

Whereas they get to feel superior because they are warriors versus fluffy artsy me. Everyone wins.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I did the same. Now I play on normal (since about 5 years - five years into console gaming) and then ff13-3 came along aND it kicked my ass.
but I was so pleased when I had a hard core gamer friend tell me that he played the european release of Catherine because the Japanese version was "unplayably hard on normal"... I just had played through the J version on normal! Yay! Finally!
It gets better. You get better.

Anon, I've been playing games for 25 years and I still mostly choose easy. I like to have fun, not be frustrated. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm usually half-decent at video games, but if something starts to particularly frustrate me? Yeah, I'll switch that setting down to Easy.
