...but why junkrat ???

if I had to headcanon anyone as trans it'd be mtf mei who felt out of place as a shy awkward chubby man and ftm roadhog who went fuck u he gon wreck ur shit

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Less stereotypical maybe? Idk

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
it feels more stereotypical to me to make the skinny weird guy the one born female

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait I might be confusing junk rat and roadhog

I don't actually pay much attention to Overwatch sorry

I did a secret a while ago about how I wanted Roadhog redemption, and someone responded that they didn't see how that could work given that Junkrat showed no interest in reforming. I think this is the horrible, horrible way that plays out: give Junkrat an "excuse" for being messed up, so that way he's just misunderstood and can also be woobified and redeemed. I just want to emphasize that I did not expect or wish for this.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it whenever theres a trans secret, it's almost always:

A.) about trans headcannons
B.) super negative

I mean jeez you guys.

Anyways, I don't know enough about Junkrat to make any meaningful comments.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeh, I think it's just right now Trans Headcanons are in that sweet spot where they're too many to easily avoid, too few and too new to shrug off as a weird unrealistic fan trend, and too sensitive a topic to be openly salty about.

Plus there's that awkward divide where you have "Writers should be able to write whatever!" vs "People are allowed to feel awkward when something is very personally squicky. "

Like... I dunno, the line between people who watch HTTYD with an amputation fetish vs. actual amputees finding their fetish fic/art and having strong personal opinions about it. It goes to an awkward place with no easy answers.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's too few and too new to shrug it of as the newest shiny fetish fandom trend. Because that's exactly what it is.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Trans headcanons are popular with young people on Tumblr, and therefore cause physical pain to F!S posters. So we have to have endless conversations about how awful they are.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
or maybe people are just getting sick of the trans cultists invading fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
With respect, your phrasing is not really doing a lot to counter my perception that there's a certain irrational overreaction here.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
my phrasing was deliberate. i'd attempt to explain my perspective on this matter, but other people have already done so better than i ever could:

We'll have fewer trans headcanons when we have more trans actual canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nawh. We still have plenty of slash even tho we've gotten a lot more canon gay couples.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-09-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
First, that's because people get off on slash; second, I don't think we really have representative representation for gay couples? We're making progress but it's not yet near to any kind of norm.

And people don't get off on transfic?

This is pretty much how I feel about all trans headcanons.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
What does aneurotypical mean?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
?Autism spectrum/other variant on the typical personality presentation.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
as another trans person, it should definitely be labeled. these tumblr fans claim to care about triggers and etc, writing fic which, suprise!, includes trans characters angsting and being disphoric without any warning is irresponsible and cruel. but like you said, any trans voices that disagree with them get labeled self-hating or truscum.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I'm damn tired of this certain type of fanauthor who keep doing the "surprise trans" stuff after several chapters without any indication of it under the guise of "oh but that's just how progressive I am, I did this because it's supposed to be normalised and if you don't like it you're a bigot!". Well, no, fuck you, maybe I just want to read fanfic without having my dysphoria triggered by people rubbing untagged transfic (and trans-smut) in my face, how about it?

I think a big thing these people don't understand is that a lot of actual real trans people use fandom as escapism to no be reminded of their daily struggles all the damn time and not tagging that stuff is more than shitty.

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I could not agree with you more! they're actively willing to throw actual trans people under the bus in the name of being "progressive." I've seen them make analogies to how people used to "warn" for gay pairings in fanfics, and it's ~totally the same~ warning for trans!characters, completely ignoring the fact that reading Kirk/Spock gives you an indication there will be gay content, and gay content does not have the potential to trigger dysphoria.

trans people who are comfortable reading about their favorite characters being trans should absolutely be allowed to find content, but I and many other trans people are not.

NA
"trans people who are comfortable reading about their favorite characters being trans should absolutely be allowed to find content, but I and many other trans people are not."

And both groups benefit from it being tagged.
The former find it easier to search for, the latter find it easier to avoid/blacklist.
(And people whose ability to handle trans!fic varies over time can make more informed decisions as to whether or not they can cope with a fic when it's tagged properly, too.)
