Capeshit bores me, but I'd buy roadkill if it had Justin Trudeau's face scratched into its hide. I really want comics about his adventures in Parliament and outdoorsmanship.

In September, Kerri was with her children when she saw Stephen King give a TV interview.

King said he’d written a story inspired by her family years before, “A Good Marriage,” about discovering the monster in the house.

Furious, she broke the family’s nine-year silence and gave a newspaper interview, lashing out at King. Among people giving her rave reviews: Dad.
-------------
All this time I have been apathetic about Stephen King. Read a few of his books, saw some of his movies.
Didn’t pay much attention to his drama. My respect for him as neutral as any other author who I’ve dabbled in.

But finding out that he had written a story based on the victims and families ...not a historical long gone mystery,
but a recent one still fresh in so many people’s minds.

Neutral feelings have turned to disgust. I have no more interest in any of his books or movies.

Dang. I'm so sorry for your loss, OP.

"Even diverse properties aren't perfect" and they don't have to be?

I agree with you for the most part, but that seemed weirdly out of place here.

I don't think the conclusion you're reaching is valid here. I don't see any reason to think that people in this case are necessarily acting on the same impulses that fandom does generally. Or even that the two groups of people are essentially similar. I mean, I feel like it's probably the case that Rick and Morty has a very distinctive fanbase, you know?

I don't know, man, it just seems like a reach.

Sounds like an extreme reaction to only half the context.

King said that he felt inspired to write the story after the public outcry against Rader's wife, Paula, who had been married to him for almost thirty years yet seemed to have no knowledge of his crimes.

It seems like the inspiration was the people attacking Rader's wife, not to exploit Rader himself or his victims for profit. If context matters, it all does, just saying.

After reading about it on wiki, it doesn't look like the story was about her family. It was about the BTK killer (and as the anon above me mentioned) his wife. Serial killers have been used as inspirations for horror for a very, very long time.

By the way, the BTK killer is both an interesting and boring serial killer to learn about.

That's...not how shipping works.

I'm sorry to hear that :(

Oh my, I'm here early.

OP is showing off their ~insider lingo~. In Hollywood they often call TV shows or movies "properties".

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom is shipping two main characters together, news at seven.

The two main characters of a TV show are white men, news at seven.

Correlation isn't causation all the time. I seriously doubt anybody is going "they're related... one's underage... I actually hate underage incest... but they're white men, so I must overcome my squick of underage incest and ship them."

Wow.
Such an edgy and unique opinion.
We've never heard that before...clearly you are one of a kind. 👍👍👍

3016 AD

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you think the future (not necessarily 3016 specifically) will be like? Will we be on other planets? Will we have evolved? Will robots have taken over? etc.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree, kind of disagree.

I agree in the sense that, like, there are definitely times when people use narratives like we're talking about here as ammunition in what is actually just bullshit fandom infighting. And that kind of thing, I agree, it's usually bullshit, and should be thoroughly ignored and not engaged with.

I don't agree in the sense that I do think it's important to critically self-examine what your own patterns are, and to try to diversify your tastes where possible (as you say you do! which is great!). It doesn't have to be something where you're either a Villain or a Good Guy, of course. But, like, an awareness of that kind of thing is good. And I don't think you should close yourself off from critical conversations about diversity in media, and I think that's an easy temptation.

So, yes, a lot of times the way that people talk about it is BS, but don't let throw out the baby with the bathwater.

I feel like these days fandom, especially from certain quarters on Tumblr, are now just spinning their wheels looking for anything to get in a snit about, be it lack of diversity or the ~wrong kind~ of diversity.

The latest example is how FTWD fans are busy snitting at each other over "lack of POC rep" because Chris Manawa is "actually played by a white person".

Oh, PLEASE, do me a favor and fuck all y'all selves off a tall cliff ya fuckin wankers.

I'm sorry you're not having fun.

But on a certain level, yeah, cry more.

By 3016, I'd reckon humans 1.0 would be mostly killed by environmental issues. If we are lucky the survivors will be able to breed and create humans 2.0 who can survive in way more extreme environments. But that isn't likely. :(

If we don't have commercial space travel by then I will be disappointed. Dead, but disappointed.

Outside of that (and probably VR, modifying our bodies with cool tech shit) is there any further we could progress? Probably, right?

Part of me thinks that most systems will crash or die somehow and humanity will be thrust into a time akin to maybe the 1700s

Impossible to predict. If the pattern of the last 20-50 years continues, the rate of tech advancement will be so high that it's beyond imagining right now. 30 years ago almost no one had a cell phone, and think about how ubiquitous and taken for granted they are today.
