Advice Thread

It's never too soon for one of these!

Novelty contact lenses

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone here tried non-prescription lenses, even though you're nearsighted? Experience, thoughts, advice?

I'm thinking of getting a pair for a special event, but I'm scared of potentially wrecking my eyes. Circumstanses prevents me from ordering from abroad, otherwise I would get prescription ones.

I think as long as you don't have sensitive eyes and buy from a well reviewed seller you should be fine? Have you worn contacts before?

I have worn regular prescription ones years ago, but it was more or less a disaster when riding in the car, it was so dry for my eyes.

Yep. I'm farsighted with astigmatism and I use x4.00 reading/magnifying lenses. Avoid anything with plastic frames and go with metal ones (plastic frames break very easily and are cheap even for cheap reading glasses). I've been using them for awhile and haven't noticed any adverse effects.

Oops I didn't see you were looking for contacts rather than glasses, my bad.

I'm transitioning a lot of my white potato eating into sweet potato eating. Love a good baked one witty my steak and fries and mash are good for a change of pace, but has anyone had luck with a loaded sweet potato (cheese, butter, bacon, green onion and a meat with barbecue sauce)? It doesn't SOUND good, but maybe it is...

It sounds gross. Why risk it???

Maybe try butter, cinnamon, and a hint of brown sugar instead.

I've done butter, bacon, and a brown-sugar syrup on a baked sweet potato. Turned out delish.

I've only slapped butter and salt on mine, but hey, the sweet taste might complement the rest up there, who knows. Give it a try. You can always alter and substitute other ingredients.

No, but I love these loaded sweet potato nachos:

I use queso fresco instead of cheddar (I thought cheddar would taste weird with sweet potato).

Don't worry about trying to bake the potato until completely crispy - they'll just burn. Bake them so they start to get crisp around the edges, but they can be soft in the midde. Keep a close eye on them and move them around on the pan if they're starting to get too brown in one part of the oven. I bake them spread out and then push them together in a pile before adding beans and cheese.

I dunno, a lot of barbecue sauce is sweet, so I don't think loaded sweet potatoes would be bad. Maybe something with caramelized onions and sage butter?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. People often put sweet things on sweet potatoes, but honestly, I find it to be overkill. They go with savory flavors just fine -- sweet potatoes are awesome in curries, for example, and people often combine it with black beans in sort of a Mexican-inspired enchilada or burrito.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how crazy is it to quit your job over not getting leave?

Depends entirely upon how sure you are of being able to get another job fairly quickly. If you're very sure, go for it, because fuck that. Particularly if you already hate your job - job stress kind of ruins everything.

If it means you'll be living in a cardboard box and not able to buy food, though, because you have zero job prospects (training/economy/whatever reason) then...maybe not. Why would they refuse your leave? Do they have any real grounds?

I guess it's about overlapping with other people, and the company has an unpleasant policy of giving parents preferential treatment in getting leave.

Honestly, I don't know how quickly I can get a job. then again, this job exhausts me so much mentally I can't really look for anything else while doing it.

Is that something you could take up with HR? Like - look what they're doing here, can we insist on my leave?

Or, conversely - do you have sick days? Take them all and try putting out some resumes while you're 'recovering'.

I"m all for the idea of getting away from a place that fucks with your sense of well-being, but not if it puts you at risk re: housing/medication/food. If you're good at your job and there's a demand for what you do and you don't think you'd be unemployed for months and months....go for it.

Sick days don't quite work like that here - like, you don't have a supply of them, you get them if you get a doctor writing a note you're sick.

I work through a temp agency, so I guess I'd have to take it up with them.

re: food/shelter - I should have enough to go on for about 3-4 months, and my parents would supply that, though I dislike putting additional strain on them.

I don't currently work in my original field, I'm decent at the job I do, but I do not want to continue in that line of work, so it's sort of a moot point.

Ah. Same for me, re: sick days, which irritate the fuck out of me. Even if i have a 'doctor's note' (what am I, five?), we don't get paid for it. If i'm too sick to work i'm...too sick to work. I hate how...*paternalistic* it all is.

I know i'm just throwing things at you in the hopes it might help to put it out there 'out loud' so to speak, so i hope I haven't muddled it up or made you feel worse. Good luck, bb, whatever you decide.

Nah, you haven't muddled anything, honestly I WANT to quit, but money is an issue.

By itself? Kind of cray.

If it's the last straw in a line full of shitty straws, the crazy factor kind of drops.

Caron Cakes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Any textile peoples out there tried one of these? They're pretty expensive/gram, but no one else makes long-change color runs. The longest I found before this was 15". and Caron Cakes are, what 15'?

Have you made a thing with it? Did you like your thing?
