[Anne of Green Gables remake]

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how this could be as good as the 1985 miniseries but I'm going to hope against hope, OP.

There's a remake? Didn't know that...

*looks at actors*

Is this like in Spiderman how the aunt keeps getting younger in every new adaptation?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Tiresome is right.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Good thing reading this secret and participating in the thread isn't mandatory and is easily avoidable, huh?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I will confess to having the initial thought of "why does Wednesday Addams have red hair?" I had done just a brief glance and honestly thought she was Wednesday - there was just something about her face that made the leap in that direction

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, there's an Anne remake? OH NO SHE BETTA DON'T.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the feeling, but I think it's sorta reassuring to know that maybe kids will love the new Anne as much as I love the old Anne.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's probably the best way to think about it, that it's aimed at a new generation. The olds just have to deal :P

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
What about the 1985 series makes it inappropriate for the new generation?

Eh, remakes don't bother me. The originals will still be there.

I'm struggling with this because I objectively have no problem with remakes, but the first two Anne adaptions were such a huge part of my childhood. I loved both the books and the first two movies so much and related to Anne a lot. So this one is difficult for me. Not sure if I will watch it, but I do hope it opens this world up to some more people.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think any visual remake of Anne of Green Gables is meaningless in this day and age. The idea of red hair being considered unattractive is laughable, even if you know that's how it was at the time the story was written. Now it's just an easy way to have a "homely" main character who's anything but, in the audience's view. And it doesn't help that the new actress is otherwise very pretty all around.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The old actress was also very pretty. I don't think changed attitudes about red hair makes the remake meaningless. It's a period piece. People generally understand that in a non-contemporary setting, attitudes about many things were different than attitudes now. Fashions and hairstyles are different, settings look different, modes of transportation aren't the same as modern modes of transportation, etc. etc. It doesn't (and shouldn't) stop anyone from making new adaptations of say, Jane Austen novels, or historical events, or anything that isn't set in 2016. Your remark doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I'm... Conflicted.

On one hand, there's nothing wrong with more Anne of Green Gables.

On the other hand, IDK how I feel about Matthew.

The trailer didn't make me feel any better; it felt too 'modern'/fast, though that's just the trailer, so...

You know, I've been positive to neutral about every other remake I've heard about, but this one actually does stab me in my childhood nostalgia. I shall now organize a boycott wade into every comment section discussing the remake in order to sling shit at it downvote the trailer a dozen times...uh, just not watch it.

That's NOT Marilla. Marilla is a plain, grim-faced woman like Colleen Dewhurst or Eileen Atkinson. No no no no no. That Anne is too self-consciously perky, and Martin Sheen....ehhh, I can't pinpoint anything concrete, but his vibe does not jibe with Matthew.

I declare this an abomination, sight unseen!

Marilla should look like Esme Weatherwax, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not bothered that this exists because anything that keeps Anne in the public consciousness is okay by me, but as far as I'm concerned, the 1985 miniseries is definitive and every other attempt at putting Anne on screen is nothing but a pale imitation.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
All I can say is, Matthew better not have relapsing-remitting MS. *glower*

I know exactly how you feel about this, I'm also over here going THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE. But I'm also glad that Anne is going to be kept in the forefront for a new generation. Not that the books have really lost in popularity apparently. Although I'm not sure how many people actually know that there are 8 of them in the series.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I reeeeaaally don't want to be reactionary, but I having just now looked it up, couldn't make it through the trailer.

I hope that new audiences will find this worthwhile, but having imprinted on the 1985 adaptation, I'm afraid I've been ruined for anything else.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it's not even Megan Follows, even though she'll always be the Anne in my head. I just can't imagine anyone other than Colleen Dewhurst and Patricia Hamilton as Marilla and Rachel Lynde.

I whole heartedly agree with you OP. That's a whole lot of NOPE right there.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-09-13 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
My grandma got me all the books when I was a kid and I couldn't even get through the first chapter because I found Anne to be so annoying and it seemed like she couldn't shut up. Didn't know there was a miniseries, knew about the anime though.
