Ignorant comments on health issues

(Anonymous) 2016-10-23 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
...by people not suffering from those issues themselves, in particular.

The usual "just don't be sad" when someone suffers from depressions, "just take a simple painkiller" for chronic pain or intense migraine attacks, you know the stuff.

Which have you gotten yourself? Which annoy you the most? Did you accidentally make an ignorant comment like this in the past?

Re: Acne:~Oh you just have to wash your face properly~
Yeah, no, not that easy. (It's also kind of insulting that those people seem to think you're too dumb/lacking an understanding of basic hygiene...)

Ugh, as someone who has had acne problems since I hit puberty and I'm now 30 I feel that.

Oh, you should wash with this. Oh, you need to not wear makeup. Oh, don't eat sugar. Oh, you shouldn't have milk. On and on and on.

Yeah, your magical advice will suddenly fix what dermatologist have been treating me for 15+ years.

IDK, when I finally went to a dermatologist for my adult acne, he put me on a short course of oral tetracycline, a topical erythromycin preparation, and nightly Retin-A. I was off everything but the Retin-A in a year or so; my skin isn't perfect now but the difference is like night and day. If you've been struggling along for 15 years without much improvement, maybe you need a second opinion, at the very least.

NAYRT but there isn't a one size fits all solution to acne and the solution you just described is the only solution 4 dermatologists I saw came up with. It's the go-to solution for simple-to-moderate acne and it works really well for those types. It has little to no effect on things like nodules and types of clinically gross acne, which have few or even no effective treatments. My own options are limited to laser treatments with significant scarring and a slight decrease in pain over a few eels or no treatment at all with the pain spread over months or years but a lot less scarring. Those antibiotics serve only to drain my bank account and line the pockets of the drug companies and their doctor shills.

AYRT here, that sounds appalling. You would think dermatologists could come up with something better after all these years. I notice you don't mention Accutane...scary, scary drug, unbelievable that it's still in use.

And you're right that my acne was only moderate at its worst. Yet I grew up constantly hearing about my mom's great beauty, especially her flawless complexion, and the message I absorbed from that was that my bad skin was as repulsive as leprosy, a disgrace. I can't imagine the distress cystic acne would cause.

If you're female, can you take birth control pills? I used to have absolutely horrible acne (creams, soaps, powders, diet changes, etc. didn't work; my face was even painful to touch), but once I was put on a birth control pill I didn't have problems with acne again, just the occasional pimple once every few months. It even got rid of the godawful cramps I had from my periods.

I know it doesn't work for everyone, just thought I'd offer a suggestion!

I have depression, anxiety, and ADD, and I've gotten a lot of shitty comments, but they're mostly from just two people in my family. According to them, I have no reason to be depressed, ADD isn't real/is just an excuse, all of my fears are silly, I'm on too much medication which isn't good for me because of Chemicals, etc.

The anxiety stuff is the most annoying because my aunt is terrified of driving over bridges, herself, so when she says stuff like, "Oh my gawwwwwd, what's the big deal??? Just do it!!" about something that makes me anxious, I always have to draw the comparison between my [feared situation] and her fear of bridges in order for her to take me seriously. I've had to do this at least 6-7 times, and each time it's like a revelation to her. (It's apparently a common family trait to have a reduced capacity for empathy. I was spared, but I just have the opposite problem instead, which also sucks.)

"Have you tried yoga?" For anxiety and being overweight.

Some friends of mine told me about their infertility issues and I was really stuck. Like, you want to be positive, but self-diagnosing is disrespectful and stupid.

I hate it when people assume you have certain issues because you're dirty/fat/whatever. For instance, anyone can get acne, no mater how clean you are or how great your diet is. It's not just a "dirty" person ailment.

Also, Dad, telling yourself that you DON'T have something and ignoring it will NOT make it go away (That was his advice to me when I mentioned something about my anxiety to him.)

I try not to make "ignorant" comments, but once in awhile a "Do you need a Tylenol?" or "You should see a Doctor then" will come out when people are complaining about ailments to me.

For chronic fatigue syndrome:

"Oh, but you look all right." (thinks) And you look like a nice person.
"I get tired too." (thinks) Which means that there are times when you're not tired.
"Just do a little bit more each day." (thinks) Gosh, I would never have thought of that myself! Thank-you!!!
"I read an article in a magazine and it said you should... (lists the fifty-first sure-fire cure you've heard)" (thinks) oh dear god...

Oh god, all of those. And before I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I was in the ER one March because I was in so much pain I couldn't walk (and terrified because I had no idea what was wrong with me when this had been going on for years) and the ER doctor said, "Are you sure you haven't just pulled a muscle?"

YES SIR! THAT'S IT! I PULLED A MUSCLE FOUR YEARS AGO AND IT JUST HASN'T GONE AWAY! I AM SO GLAD YOU COULD FIX ME! ¬.¬

I was once in a discussion where asshat complained that his waitress had acne, which was clearly caused by staph infection (WHUT) and he was concerned she was dripping germs on his food. If only, you poisonous old fart...
