I agree with you, OP.

(Unrelated, but I'm also thinking of writing a fic, but I can't bring myself to start, because I don't know how to write Chekov. Do I need to write out his accent phonetically?)

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Please don't and don't do it for Scotty either. It's beyond annoying as it somehow assumes that the American-sounding characters don't have accents, which they most certainly do to the ears of non-Americans. We know what everyone sounds like anyway - phonetic dialogue is just distracting. If you focus on getting everyone's typical syntax and vocabulary right, you'll capture their voices fine.

I don't think you should write in the accent, it's rather distracting and eventually gets annoying as well. If you write the character well, the reader will have no problem "hearing" his voice.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Diane Duane did it but she was very subtle about it - only changing "v"s to "w"s a few times when called for.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as far as I remember more or less everyone in TOS just called him 'Doctor' (or 'Admiral' in TNG), Kirk excepted.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there was anyone, ever, who referred to him as Bones, it was always just the captain. I agree it's completely ridiculous when other characters in fics do it. Also, Lenny and Leo are even worse, I don't think those were ever used in the show

Inappropriate behavior in chain of command in fics just annoys me a lot in general. I always see people who will write characters in a military or military-esque setting behaving in completely ridiculous ways, and yes sometimes they can be more casual, but some stuff is just not done, okay.

Me, too! I hate it, and it's very frustrating.

I'm a veteran, so that kind of thing just throws me RIGHT out of the story.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear ya, OP. I can't even daydream stuff that would be OOC, let alone read it.
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (trek)

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2016-10-30 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a character do that once in a fic because I was new enough to the fandom to not realize nobody besides Jim ever called him that (and I'd seen a good amount of TOS at that point, it just...never occurred to me, especially since often the only other person who frequently interacts with him is Spock who isn't really going to use a nickname on McCoy). It wasn't because I thought the character was hot shit, though McCoy at least had no professional authority there, so it wasn't the inappropriate buddy-buddy thing you're complaining about.

Not OP, but I just wanted to say that I can see how people -might- think it's normal for everyone to call McCoy "Bones" -- after all, we the viewers do it all the time, so one can easily forget that was the nickname used exclusively by the Captain.

Just any sort of thing like this is jarring. It seems nit-picky, but especially shows with an official hierarchy (military, etc.), some behavior just *would not happen* and I wish more people would pay attention to that.
otakugal15: (GOOD GOD)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2016-10-30 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No, OP, you're right. Kirk chose that nickname for McCoy. In both canons (even if teh newer canon was a kind of phoned in nickname, it still stands).

Bones is Bones to Kirk and no one else. It's McCoy (if they are more than acquaintances or friends) or Dr. McCoy to everyone else.

And that's that.

Everything about this secret speaks to me!

I do exactly the same thing. I can't read fic where anyone but Jim calls him Leonard "Bones". I can't even imagine if he got to know someone really well he would want them to call him by Jim's nickname.

Since I'm expressing my own annoyances here. I also hate when someone is a really good writer but doesn't bother to actually look up the medical advancements proposed by Trek for their writing. I mean they have Leonard regrow the woman's kidney in The Voyage Home. He's not going to be putting band aids on people. Or giving them old fashioned shots.

On a side note I also completely loath when people write Captain America fan fiction and call him "Stevie". That might make me even more grumpy then the Bones things.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Even worse when an OC calls him "Bonesy". I nope right outta there.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I totally understand.

Bones doesn't bother me so much because at least it is an actually nickname used for him. (I can be a bit forgiving of who uses it.)

It's when authors make up nicknames that aren't from canon that make me nope out of a fic.

Some fandoms are terrible with this. The worst is when a fanmade nickname catches on with fandom and every other fic uses it.

I can see how somebody new might call him that - once.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
And only once. The snap back would be epic, I think.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I agree and don't think it's that petty. People don't go around calling him "plum" either.

I share you pain OP.

I'm not in the Star Trek fandom but in my current fandom there is a character who goes by a whole host of nicknames/codenames/handles throughout the entire decades-spanning series (in both real time and game time) and of them, there is a single character who called him by his real name. One. Period. Nobody else calls him this. (He also calls this character by his real name, which is another thing nobody else does.)

Yet every second fucking fic it seems like the author will have another character use said character's real name, especially if it's shippy, to show how ~close~ they've become. Nobody does this in the fucking games! Said dude dates and bones another dude and that dude still calls him by his code name or title. Like, while they're fucking even.

ARGH ONLY ADAM CALLS HIM JOHN STOP FUCKING HAVING OTHER CHARACTERS DO IT YOU'RE WORSE THAN HITLER.
