31. You know what? The book is my favorite book of all time, and I can say that, while I do love the movie (the design and animation of the unicorn is beautiful, and I love a lot of the music), I can see where you're coming from. It's quite old and, at times, it's downright cheesy. I didn't much care for the pacing of it, either, and watching it now... I can't say I find it nearly as involving or emotionally impactive as the book.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't taught how to do that properly at school, or at least it wasn't caught when I did it repeatedly for many years.

When I was finally told that it was wrong, I didn't believe that it wasn't just a stylistic choice thing for ages. In fact I argued passionately for the rights of those poor neglected sentences to finish, properly, with a full stop!

(Now, of course, it looks weird and wrong... but it wasn't that long ago that that was me. *headdesk*)

01 – Everything has its time. People move on – and sometimes, other people move in, and the cycle starts anew. Eventually, you'll find something else. Until then, well, welcome new people, keep up discussion and contribution, and keep having fun. It's all you can do.

Honestly, I think fandom is easier to worry about, because a career is more overwhelming. Fandom is less significant, but more immediate, more personal.

07 – People have certainly overreacted, but I think it's fair to expect LJ to be open with its users, and keep them in mind when making decisions.

08 – Honestly? I think that's a pretty normal feeling. If you play a character, and see others writing them horribly, it sets your teeth on edge – and sometimes you judge far more fiercely than you would otherwise.

23. I semi agree with you. I do believe there is room for crticism of mediocre or truly bad characters, particularly in fanfiction, since good concrit helps young writers to grow, but I think that a lot of the snark goes to far. I say this as a former "snarker" too: something I regret and fortunately "grew out of."

While there are "true Mary Sues" in abudnance, I really do believe that some indivuduals just use "Mary Sue" or "Gary Stu" as code for "character I do not like" - sometimes even for canon characters, in their canons. It's a cheap n' easy way to stigmatize a fanfic author.

What I mean is - it's just fanficition, amature derivative work. It's not the end of the world if someone writes a Sue, and an author isn't a horrible person or an irrevocably bad writer if they write some Mary Sues in their time. None of us are perfect, we are all capable of writing crap, and most folks who stick with writing fanfic for a while grow out of their "Sue stage."

As far as the guy in the picture goes... man, I'm just gonna have to find and watch Gurren-Lagann or whatever, aren't I? I'm intensely curious about the dude that I see frequently secret-ed that has so many fans.

30. You should definitely talk to them and tell them what's wrong. I've been in situations like that myself, and all it took for the other parties to understand where I was coming from...was, well, the truth. If they really are your friends, they'll hear you out and try to fix things. If they don't want to? It's probably best that you move on, since they're obviously more concerned with new fandoms and roleplays than real friends. They just aren't worth having, in that case.

Similarly, I thought all of my friends 'left' me for D.Gray-man when I was still in the Shaman King fandom. I hated that damn series with a passion for months. So, I decided to really give it a try...and now it's my favorite. I'm not suggesting that you necessarily have to do the same, but sometimes you'll surprise yourself. I only really got into it at volume 14.

LATE COMMENT, BUT I go to Reed, and look, this is me participating in fandom.

The problem is they mostly think the drama on

reedlj is really good lj drama, but you and I will know better.

But yeah, if you have questions about the college + workload, I'm more than willing to discuss. :D
