Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
How often do you have them? Do you have them? I have them semi-frequently and vividly, and its a real drag, and it feels like such a not adult problem to have :/

And side question: Is there a term for a dream where you are aware its a dream but can't control anything? I know there is lucid dreaming, but most people tell me in lucid dreams you are aware its a dream, and as a result can control what's going on. A frequent flavor of nightmare I have is being aware I'm having a dream but being unable to change anything or wake up, making myself feel trapped in my own mind and get really upset (and thus feel really upset when I wake up)

I have them sometimes, more when I was younger but they're still there.

I actually attribute my fear of water as an adult to a very vivid nightmare I had when I was little about drowning in the deep end of a swimming pool.

The most common recurring ones I have today involve my teeth falling out. No idea why. :/

Teeth falling out is definitely a stress thing, it's pretty common and I've had that dream, it sucks.

That explains it - I've been very stressed out lately for all kinds of reasons, so that may have something to do with the nightmares.

I had a dream about my teeth being messed up recently and my close friend told me that dreams about teeth or teeth falling out or being damaged can really mean miscommunication. At the time I was too shy to communicate something to someone I knew irl so it fit. Dunno if that will help you but..thought I'd share.

Re: Nightmares

[personal profile] thedarksideofprocyon 2016-12-14 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
That could be contributing - I feel bottled in in some ways, which might fit.

Re: Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I used to get that one a lot and it was explained to me that it signified stress/feeling a loss of control. Considering how many people have the same dream, report it, and the fact that I haven't had one since certain positive life changes, I'm inclined to believe it's true.

so blame the GREs? I mean talk about stress...

Re: Nightmares

[personal profile] thedarksideofprocyon 2016-12-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
The GREs probably aren't helping, combined with family trouble, stress around adulthood, conflict with my parents, and my failure to get a job.

Yeah - I think I do have issues with stress and feeling a loss of control. In hindsight, the nightmare does make sense.

I hear the teeth falling out one is really common! I only had it once, which is weird cause I actually have dental problems irl so you think it would be one of mine. (Funnily enough in that dream though all my teeth started falling out and I was like "HOW AM I GONNA PAY FOR THIS I DON'T HAVE DENTAL INSURANCE..." which I don't think is normally the point of those kind of dreams.)

I had a dream where I drowned once, but oddly it didn't bother me that much. Maybe because the circumstances were so surreal. (I was at one of those dolphin or whale shows or something and got splashed and that small bit of water turned into a giant wave that dragged me under).

The dreams where I die by falling from some great height bother me a lot more. Thankfully I haven't had one in a while though.

I get teeth falling out every so often too. I always took it very literal, in the sense that I always thought it was my head telling me I need to brush them more.

I would say I have unpleasant anxiety dreams semi-regularly, and then full on awful nightmare dreams once every couple months

It is indeed a pain in the ass

Re: Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nightmares are very much and adult problem, mine tend to be about things I'm worried about and they set off my anxiety pretty badly.

They say trying to take down your stress level can help, but I've never felt like I could ever stop nightmares, even if I'm coping pretty well during the day my mind just may fuck me over at night.

Re: Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean, that kind of makes sense, to me? Coping with stress isn't the same as reducing it. The stress is still there and so it makes sense itd affect your dreams.

All I have is nightmares. :C At least 4-5 times a week that I can remember. Usually about me being chased and murdered.

Me too! Well, not murdered, and not as frequently as that, but most of my dreams are about being chased by something I can't escape

I don't get the murder ones but being chased is a very common thing for my nastier dreams.

Also I'm sorry you get them so often, that fucking blows.

I get chasing dreams at times, but it tends to be me running away from some authority figure.

I don't get nightmares that often and I usually can't remember them but if I do it's usually me getting chased by something.

If sleep paralysis counts as a nightmare though I get that every couple of months which is... fun.

Re: Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have genuine nightmares but I do frequently have unpleasant and disturbing dreams. I don't remember the details of them shortly after waking but they do cause me to wake up in a horrible mood, dreading the day and feeling out of sorts.

It's either that or full-on sleep paralysis, but I haven't had an incident of that in a couple years so the nightmares about demons have vanished with it.

I wish I knew what the latter thing was called, though, anon, that does happen to me (usually while I'm dozing/barely into REM sleep) and I'm so frustrated because I want to control it and I can't.

Re: Nightmares

[personal profile] sarillia 2016-12-14 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have what I think of as anxiety dreams more than straight up nightmares. Dreams where I fucked up college so much that I got sent back to high school (and lately they've added an extra level of stress where I realize it's a dream and blow off classes but then start worrying that I'm wrong and it's not a dream after all) or dreams where my friends secretly hate me.

Re: Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I go through cycles where I wake up during nightmares often enough to remember them, and then I probably still have them but sleep through them so I don't remember in the morning. Waking up from a nightmare sucks when it's the middle of the night because I'm always frightened to go back to sleep afterwards. Also, the "aware it's a nightmare" thing has never happened to me that I remember, but maybe it's related to hypnagogic hallucinations?

Re: Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I have never had a nightmare. I don't dream. I know that everyone's supposed to dream and maybe I just don't ever remember mine but from my perspective, I don't dream. I've never noted any negative effects from it, and I'm glad to have never had a nightmare.

If they're persistent it might be due to your sleep cycle or breathing not being as it should be. Maybe talk to your doctor about a sleep study?

I have night terrors. The fun wake up scream crying 100% convinced that I still have blood all over me because I watched someone die kind. Apparently I've gone back to sitting up and having conversations with nobody in my sleep again too, or maybe I never stopped. More often than not I have something ruining my sleep.

I don't have much in the way of full-on nightmares anymore, more the occasional disturbing dream, but I also don't think nightmares are a non-adult problem. Adults can have nightmares.

Some of my most common disturbing themes in dreams are teeth falling out, running away from some authority figure, and the End of the World.

There was also that one tidal wave dream - they weren't violent waves, but still there was a whole thing of just getting through them.
