Nightmares
(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)And side question: Is there a term for a dream where you are aware its a dream but can't control anything? I know there is lucid dreaming, but most people tell me in lucid dreams you are aware its a dream, and as a result can control what's going on. A frequent flavor of nightmare I have is being aware I'm having a dream but being unable to change anything or wake up, making myself feel trapped in my own mind and get really upset (and thus feel really upset when I wake up)
Re: Nightmares
I actually attribute my fear of water as an adult to a very vivid nightmare I had when I was little about drowning in the deep end of a swimming pool.
The most common recurring ones I have today involve my teeth falling out. No idea why. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)so blame the GREs? I mean talk about stress...
Re: Nightmares
Yeah - I think I do have issues with stress and feeling a loss of control. In hindsight, the nightmare does make sense.
Re: Nightmares
(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:13 am (UTC)(link)I hear the teeth falling out one is really common! I only had it once, which is weird cause I actually have dental problems irl so you think it would be one of mine. (Funnily enough in that dream though all my teeth started falling out and I was like "HOW AM I GONNA PAY FOR THIS I DON'T HAVE DENTAL INSURANCE..." which I don't think is normally the point of those kind of dreams.)
Re: Nightmares
The dreams where I die by falling from some great height bother me a lot more. Thankfully I haven't had one in a while though.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)It is indeed a pain in the ass
Re: Nightmares
(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)They say trying to take down your stress level can help, but I've never felt like I could ever stop nightmares, even if I'm coping pretty well during the day my mind just may fuck me over at night.

Re: Nightmares
If sleep paralysis counts as a nightmare though I get that every couple of months which is... fun.
Re: Nightmares
(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)It's either that or full-on sleep paralysis, but I haven't had an incident of that in a couple years so the nightmares about demons have vanished with it.
I wish I knew what the latter thing was called, though, anon, that does happen to me (usually while I'm dozing/barely into REM sleep) and I'm so frustrated because I want to control it and I can't.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)Re: Nightmares
I have night terrors. The fun wake up scream crying 100% convinced that I still have blood all over me because I watched someone die kind. Apparently I've gone back to sitting up and having conversations with nobody in my sleep again too, or maybe I never stopped. More often than not I have something ruining my sleep.
Re: Nightmares
Some of my most common disturbing themes in dreams are teeth falling out, running away from some authority figure, and the End of the World.
There was also that one tidal wave dream - they weren't violent waves, but still there was a whole thing of just getting through them.
