Star Wars

Have you seen Rogue One? What did you think?

Do you like the prequels? If not, was there anything you did like about them?

What's your favorite part of the OT trilogy?

What did you like about the Force Awakens?

Have you read or watched any SW materials outside the movies? How did you like it?

Re: Star Wars

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-12-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Didn't like it. It was boring as fuck until the last 10 minutes. I almost couldn't even sit through it.

Didn't even watch most of the prequels.

Ewok movie.

TR8R!

Nope lol.

I think overall I liked Rogue One, but I agree that it was a bit of a slog in parts.

Are you serious about the Ewok movie? I used to watch that over and over as a kid. All I remember now is the parents in the cages with the monster. :)

i really liked it but i've seen like 10 minutes of a new hope, so im not exactly the intended audience? i think i appreciated it more as a good action film.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2016-12-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
This is interesting to me. I thought as a standard action film, it actually failed. I thought the fighting became repetitive. But, I am a pretty big Star Wars fan, so I'm not sure how that plays into things. I do like action films too, but I felt like I did watching Immortals. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen at the end.

Re: Star Wars

R1: I have, it was great. It fit in the SW universe, but wasn't like the SW movies. Darth Vader has never been so scary. Only bad thing was that it was maybe a bit *too* bleak for my taste, even though it made sense from a plot perspective.

Prequels: I didn't have a lot of expectations going in, so to me they're fine. Anakin and his romance with Padme are terrible, too much CGI, some action sequences take too long, but there are good things too. For example: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Palpatine, and most of RotS when things start going badly.

OT: So many things...but my favorite part is probably the world-building. Compared to a lot of other sci-fi/fantasy, it's pretty subtle.

TFA: It felt like SW. It was charming, the characters were likeable.

other SW stuff: I want to say yes, but I honestly don't know...I've been really into SW at different times, and I've definitely considered picking up a tie-in novel or watching one of the animated shows, but I guess I haven't yet.

If you have time, I would definitely recommend The Clone Wars TV series. I'm biased because I absolutely love it. The stories come in small arcs or individual episodes so they're pretty easy to watch in small batches. I would give it a try.

I liked it. A lot grittier than the main franchise. I lost the plot a bit in the free-for-all brawl near the end. Thought the deconstruction of how the Rebellion was put together was interesting.

Taken as a set with A New Hope it's... the Ethnic Cast that dies so Mr Blondey McWhiterson can be the Chosen One and save the day, yayy!

No.

I like the prequels. They were the first Star Wars movies I ever watched.

I don't remember enough of the OT to have a favorite. Uhhh, Harrison Ford looking fine as hell?

I found Force Awakens to be too boring so I didn't finish it.

I played one of the games but I don't recall which. :C

I can't remember; are you in the Star Wars fandom at all? Like, do you have any ships or read any fic for it, etc.?

I'm curious; how far did you get into Force Awakens?

I haven't read all that many of them yet, but my favorite Star Wars thing is the books. I'm reading the Jedi Apprentice series and I love actually seeing all different worlds and races and things that make it seem like it's really a vast galaxy. The films kind of bug me in how they keep revolving around a single family.

I haven't seen Rogue One. I've heard mixed things. I get really bored by space battles full of ships shooting lasers at each other (the climax of A New Hope did nothing for me), and I've heard conflicting things about whether that means I should avoid Rogue One or not.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2016-12-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
As soon as I'm done with the Thrawn trilogy and some of the new canon books, I was eyeing the Jedi Apprentice series. I'm kind of on the fence because I really like Qui-gon and Obi-wan but from what I've heard, I'm not sure I like what they did with the characters in this series. None of it's canon now, which might make it easier as I can treat it as a what-if kind of AU. What are your thoughts on how they handle Qui-gon and Obi-wan?

I don't mind space battles but they're not a selling point for me either. I was bored by the battle on the beach. The one in space was fine but predictable. I've heard excellent things about the Rogue One novelization though.

Yes. I didn't mind it, enjoyed the last 5-10 mins the best though because I like lightsabers and force-powers the most in the SW universe.

Yeah they're alright, some of the dialogue is god-awful but there are good bits to them as well and overall I do like them. Also, lightsabers and force-powers aplenty. Oh and the music is fantastic.

Darth Vader tbh, he looks cool and has a neat looking lightsaber and force-chokes people, plus Han, Luke, and Leia are fun too.

Finn and Rey, they were both super-adorable to me and I'm interested to see where their stories go, but overall I thought the movie was fun.

I've tried watching the Clone Wars TV shows and the Rebels one but for whatever reason anything outside the movies bores me to death and I can't make it 5 mins without reaching for a tablet or my phone. I just don't really care about the larger universe with Star Wars tbh, I'm good with the movies and that's it.

Re: Star Wars

I like lightsabers and force-powers the best too. I was fascinated by Chirrut's character in the R1 movie.

Re: Star Wars

I haven't seen Rogue One.

The prequels... well, Phantom Menace is just straight-up garbage. I don't think it has any redeeming qualities whatsoever. Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith are both definitely better but I don't think they're ultimately good movies. The thing is, both of them have a lot of interesting things going on, in terms of the aesthetics and genre choices and themes. There's a lot of space to play with there. It could be really rich and good. But the execution just fucks it up. So little of that stuff ends up showing up on the screen. They just end up being boring and inept.

I would say my single favorite part of the original movies is how badass everyone is, especially Han and Leia. Also the organic-ness of the worlds and the aesthetic choices - I know it's a cliche but it does look lived-in and I really enjoy that aspect of it. It's really well done.

I really liked TFA. Much better than the prequels. It's not a perfect movie - you could definitely trim a bunch in the first half, probably some of the early Rey desert scenes and definitely the whole monster chase sequence, and I think it should have spent a little more time sketching the relationship between the heroes. And of course it's not very original at all. But still, it's a really fun and intensely charming space adventure movie with a lot of cool shit and everything in it is really likable. Also, the cast is so pretty. Especially Boyega, Ridley, and Oscar Isaac - they're all so pretty, especially Daisy Ridley, who is ridiculously beautiful. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't part of my reaction to the film.

I have read a bunch of Star Wars fiction - mostly when I was a lot younger, but I've read a pretty good portion of the novels up through the Yuuzhan Vong or whatever stuff. Not much after that. Unfortunately, most of the books are pretty bad. The best it ever really gets is "competent military SF". I did really like Luke and Mara Jade's relationship, for reasons I frankly can't recall.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2016-12-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I agree about the monster-chase sequence in TFA. I thought that whole segment could be lifted out of the movie without missing anything.

I've only started reading EU stuff but I agree with your assessment of the books. I've been disappointed with how Zahn is writing women in the Thrawn trilogy and I'm not sure why Mara Jade is so well loved (at least with how far I've read). But, the "competent military SF" has been on point.

Have you ever watched CinemaWins's take on the prequels? I'm not trying to convert you, since I agree there are a lot of issues with the prequels, but I thought CinemaWins's videos were really interesting in finding positivity in the prequels.

R1 - I feel like it brought some interesting and good stuff to the table without being a movie I actually enjoyed. I enjoyed bits of it, but I don't like dark movies. I thought the first 30 minutes or so were super-choppy and confusing and reminded me of The Last Airbender. Also, I am very conflicted between "Yeah, add in moral greyness to the Rebellion!" makes it a more realistic and believable story, and DAMNIT why can't we just have good guys anymore? It seems like every Tom, Dick, and Steve is a Morally Ambiguous Good(?) Guy lately. It doesn't make it interesting, it just makes me irritated at the characters.

That was actually one of my problems getting into The Clone Wars, it seemed very smug about constantly reminding the audience that these lovable characters who think they're saving the galaxy are actually being manipulated by an evil mastermind and you should feel bad about the whole situation, you sicko.

Prequels - Similar to R1, I feel it added a lot to the canon. It also added a lot of face-palmy stuff, but parts are enjoyable.

OT - I am a Bad Person and liked how beautifully everyone got hurt in the OT. I'm pretty sure Han's torture, Luke's Hoth rescue, and Han's carbonite sickness is what sparked a lifetime love affair with the h/c genre.

FA - I liked how vibrant and distinctive the characters were, the well crafted dialogue, just how enjoyable it is to watch. I like that it adds in a lot of questions and room for building on without feeling incomplete. I love that Rey's allowed to be ANGRY. No quietly tight lipped ladylike disapproving stare or salty-flirty dialogue, she snarls like a wild animal at Kylo and it's amazing. I also love-love-love that apart from fandom's wild howling about "WHO'S THE DADDY?! WHO'S MIGHTY SPERM CAN WE GIVE CREDIT TO?!" the movie itself has her entirely self-motivated and self-created. There's no daddy issues, no rape, no betrayal from a dude that transformed her into a hero. Her left-behind-by-family leaves them as blank plot devices, like Starlord's mother, Drax's wife and daughter, Batman's parents, Superman's planet.

I have tried to get into The Clone Wars, the jerky animation and writing makes it hard. It's so painfully aimed at teenage boys. Star Wars Rebels Season 1 was excellent, but it seems to have steadily gone downhill since Greg Weisman left.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2016-12-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think your take on R1 is exactly mine. I don't know that I enjoyed it necessarily but I liked parts of it (mostly Baze and Chirrut). I share your frustration with having everyone be morally grey now. I think there's value in having straight good guys and bad guys. There are stories to be told in that kind of universe. It's not like people don't know the world isn't so squeaky clean (and if they don't, changing a movie isn't going to educate them). And there are other kinds of movies/stories they can seek out for that kind of thing. I just want a few places where I can enjoy good characters being honestly good.

It's interesting, though, how different your take on TCW is to mine. I adore TCW. I think it adds something to know how tragic everything's going to be. Palpatine is a magnificent bastard and I always want someone to stop him, even though I know no one will. I just want to give everyone a hug. I found Rebels' animation to be more distracting (especially the mouth movements) and I've had a harder time connecting to the characters and really getting into it. I'm not sure what makes TCW aimed to teenage boys but I really enjoyed it. I would've loved for them to complete the arcs that they were planning. I do like Rebels though. I hope that now that R1 is out, they can be a little bolder in their story choices.

I have not.

Eh.....I like mocking them. & I love Padme.

The part where Luke is looking at the two suns of Tatooine and Binary Sunset plays.

I liked seeing SW on the big screen for the first time, the idea of a reformed (?) stormtrooper, why Rey is there.

I love TCW show.

Just saw Rogue One tonight! I liked it a lot. Not quite as much as TFA, but was thoroughly entertained.

I didn't like the prequels the first time I saw them, but coming back with The Clone Wars and other supplementary material under my belt made me appreciate them a lot more. I love the expansion of the universe (I even love the politics), the art design, the practical effects, the characters. Palpatine is the greatest mastermind ever. I still can't watch Attack of the Clones in one sitting, though. Also, Padmé Amidala is the best. I love that she is literally Anakin's sugarmomma.

From the OT, my favorite thing is the characters, followed closely by the cinematography.

I also loved the characters in TFA. I am super interested to find out what happens in the trilogy, especially to all the new characters (who I adore).

I've read some of the now-defunct EU, watched TCW, and am currently trying to catch up on new book canon. I've generally enjoyed all of it. TCW is probably my favorite Star Wars thing there is.

I loved Rogue One. Loved every minute of it. It may actually be my favorite Star Wars movie, honestly. It is too early to tell, but right now I'm completely in love with it.

Yes, I like the Prequels. I like most Star Wars. The Prequels aren't as good as the OT, but they are still good.

Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the OT movies.

I liked most of the Force Awakens, even though I'm a huge EU fan and sad that we lost most of it.

Yes. I grew up reading the Star Wars books. I basically love everything up to the New Jedi Order. The NJO sucked (other than a few bits, I liked Jaina in it). And everything after it sucked.

Rogue One was an okay movie but I didn't warm up to a single character. It's not a good sign if the character you dislike the least is a droid. I thought all the callbacks were tacky and unnecessary and the CGI'd people were creepy and not done well enough to avoid a trip down uncanny valley.

I loved Episode 1 but that's mostly a nostalgia thing for me, I don't think it's a good movie. The other two suffer from terrible dialogues, wooden acting and dumb slapstick.

I never was as big a fan of the OT as others. I think it has something to do with disliking the muppety style of puppets for the aliens.

I liked the characters of TFA. I really hated the billionth version of "look our villains are totally a Nazi analogy" - it's lazy as fuck.

I loved the Jedi Apprentice book up to a certain point where I stopped reading. I occasionally watch Rebels but I'm not thrilled about it. Tried watching the Clone Wars series but I got bored.

I really liked Rogue One. Instead of the blockbuster movie, its genre lineage seems to be more World War II movies. I thought it was an interesting, and potentially risky, choice to make. Like the World War II movies where the bleak ending is softened by the knowledge that Our Heroes didn't die for nothing, setting this right before ANH kept R1 from being hopelessly bleak.

I really like the parts of the Prequel Trilogy that I like, if that makes any sense? I'm not there for the plot, and I'm definitely not there for the Anakin/Padme romance. I'm there for the world, and the secondary characters. And I'll always have a soft spot for TPM because of Qui-Gon Jinn.

I love the Original Trilogy, tiny!me had a crush on Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett is cool and mysterious, but the best part will forever be Leia. She was one of my first, if not the first female action heroes.

I loved TFA. Saw it twice in the first run theater, and there aren't all that movies that I see that way once. It wasn't the most original movie in the world, but it didn't need to be. From the first scene, I felt like I was back in the world of Star Wars, in the way that I hadn't been with the Prequels.

I have read a lot of Star Wars novels. Some of them I really enjoyed (Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy really caught the "feel" of Star Wars for me), some of them I couldn't even finish, or skimmed (the whole Yuzun Vong, or however you spell it, arc).
