Fanfiction

I was reading a review on a TV episode and they said the episode was like fanfiction. Star Wars TFA and Rogue One have both been compared to fanfiction, and it's definitely a negative. To me, fanfiction tropes are popular for a reason, so do you think a piece of media being compared to fanfiction is a fair criticism?

It is a weird comparison to me because there is no one set quality of fanfiction. There is just as much of a wide range (or even more) than in any media form. There are bad ones, yes, but there are amazing, book-quality fanfics out there.

I think what they're getting at is a fair criticism of a piece of media, but I don't think it's necessarily a fair generalization about all pieces of fanfiction

I tend to see that criticism in that fanfic, by it's very nature, can cut corners because it's working from an existing knowledgebase of the characters/situation/relationships.

So something like X-Men Evolution would be judged on if it's an enjoyable show about secretly superpowered kids in high school, or if it relies on the gimmick of it's X-Men! But as kids! In HIGH SCHOOL!!!!

Sure, it's totally fair.

I've seen this as a criticism in two ways. The first is when someone is using it to say the writing isn't very good. I've read a lot of awesome fic, but let's be honest. Most fanfic is not awesome. It's cliche and tropey and incestuous in style. Think... Joss Whedon's dialog. Every character sounds the same and makes the same kind of jokes. Fun and sometimes compelling, but mostly shallow. That's most fanfic.

The other way I've seen it is when someone is saying the media relies too much on playing on audience familiarity or nostalgia, without offering anything of real substance.

hi I'm the anon who was freaking out over my failed course yesterday, and I just wanted to really really thank the people here that comforted me.
I met with my advisor today and he's really great, he figured out exactly what I need to do, and the good news is that I can fix it and the F will be removed from my transcript if everything goes well.
The bad news is that in order to have a chance at getting a fellowship I really really need, I basically need to write a whole seminar paper THIS WEEK and get all the paperwork through.
.....welp this will be fun. I have definitely learned my lesson about knowing what's going on and getting shit done on time.

I was playing a Sims house that was a mom and dad, two teenagers, a child and two toddlers. There used to be a grandma when the toddlers were babies, but she died and hadn't been a problem at all.

Except, last night, she decided to haunt the family. To death. Mom and Dad got trapped upstairs and she just kept scaring them until they died! Right in front of one of the toddlers. So, she's going to be a fucked up knowledge sim with a penchant for magic and monsters, for sure.
