Re: So I think I'm working with a war criminal

Sadly, that type of mindset and story are pretty typical for a lot from wartimes.

Sure, most of the diversity on the show comes from single-episode characters (aside from Holmes, who can't really be described as NT either). But the quality of those characters is well above what I've previously seen on TV. There's gay and bi men who are not sex objects, case studies in tragedy, walking stereotypes, or punchlines. People with major mental illness who take responsibility for it and don't chew the scenery. There are witnesses and informants who just happen to be gay or lesbian.

So sure, I'll take it.

That's so sweet! :D

I'd be more likely to have cried at the realisation that I had paid money for that book.

Yeah, that was the root of the argument I was being fed. More painfully, it was a Jewish person saying it... and I was like how are you comfortable having your identity be reduced to "lives in ghettos"?????
It was pretty shocking to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Like when I was 35? No, I can't say I have.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That assumes that:

1) including these diverse characters is a lot of effort
2) that everything writers and showrunners do is only for profit

You might have an argument with #2, but eh, not really. Shows often have silly inside jokes or cameos that don't get them any "profit" except to share a giggle with some of the audience. Don't let cynicism blind you to reality.

I can never decide whether I'm a fan of this or not. On the one hand, I actually really like this hairstyle on dudes and ladies alike; on the other hand, afaik he never wears this particular do in canon, so it's weird that everyone has latched onto it like some kind of signature style of his.

I'm with you there. I wouldn't stay at a hotel with no reviews either.

Some American chocolate is okay but I don't think Reese's is very good. It's better than Hershey's tho

(Also I hope it came off this way but I was interpreting this exchange in a "light jesting about unimportant topics" sort of vein. I'm not actually going to be angry if someone likes Reese's chocolates. it doesn't make sense but I'm not mad about it)

I got fucked by a friend. Pretty fun but unremarkable in the greater scheme of things. I was 13 and we'd fooled around together a lot before that.

There's a bunch of headcanons about him being Jewish based on the name, the hair, and his Israeli-made gun.
I mean he's obviously not intended to be Jewish, but if people feel happy claiming him, then okay I guess?
/not one to talk, since I'm in the LEVI IS TOTES JEWISH camp of SNK. Though in my defense, I do not do it very seriously.

Yup. We'll, I love her, and she didn't want to have sex, so, like, what were the options there, really?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Something can be dumb and not that objectively high quality and still genuinely touch a person, if they are in an emotional space to respond to the idea presented. That said I don't know what the ending was, because I haven't read this, so ymmv I suppose.

It is fun in your 20s and then again from your mid 50s, but inbetween most people fool themselves that they are climbing the ladder and going places. Eventually most people realize that they aren't and become happy again with just the job security and steady wage. There is a kind of zen that floats over you once you realize that the one or two people who do make it out of the pit are not going to be you and are never going to take you with them. It is in your 30s and 40s that you fool yourself that you are going to be one of the ones who beat the odds.

I've been using Tripadvisor. I signed up for alerts but I haven't received any emails, despite the prices changing constantly. I'll give google flights and kayak a try. Thanks!

I almost did after I bought Breaking Dawn. I desperately wanted to know how it ended and went to one of those midnight parties at the bookstore to get my copy, then rushed home, read it in one sitting, and absolutely hated it.

Mini Cadbury eggs for daaaayyyyyssss

Also, I know that the big goo filled Cadbury eggs are objectively horrible but I love them so much, primarily because my grandparents used to buy them for me and there's a lot of nostalgia there

I should laugh at myself because I don't care about Twilight anymore and was pretty critical of it when I was in the fandom but I'm still miffed by the suggestion that it's a completely happy ending. The ending is perfectly sad if you liked Bella's relationship with Jacob, platonic or otherwise.

The only real argument I could see for the elves being Jew-coded would be that iirc the alienage theme in DA:O was a really ham-fisted homage to the soundtrack of Schindler's List. But I think Bioware did that just to really hammer home the oppression narrative, and not as any sort of specific parallel.

I'm sorry, nonnie :( I hope they turn up and your week gets better!

I know it varies by state for the birth certificates but could you get replacements? I lost my social security card and it was easy to get a new one, but I had to pay and it took like 6 weeks for it to show up. I think I also had to go to an office to arrange it all, but I don't really remember because it was about 20 years ago. I was also an immigrant so it might have gone through different channels.

Europe. Specifically the Netherlands.

Re: Worst thing you've lost?

I lost like $160 once, but I'm not sure it counts as actually being lost, since I'm 99% sure my friend's sister stole it.

I lost a couple of expensive pieces of jewelry when I was ten. Because for some reason my mother thought it was a good idea to give her tomboy ten-year-old expensive jewelry? I do not understand her thought process there.
