Inspired by #3 pt. 2

What do you think were some of the best unconventional casting decisions in movie history?

Not actors/actresses that were the obvious perfect fit, but ones that were risky or that the audience doubted but turned out incredible.

I think there's been a lot of this in comic movies. Michael Keaton as Batman. Heath Ledger as Joker. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. etc. All the ones that fans were up-in-arms about before they saw the movies.

I love looking at the difference in comments about Heath Ledger's Joker from right after he was cast and then after the movie came out.

Yeah, the Heath Ledger love is cooling off now though. Partly because of all the copycat villains (every movie villain these days is Ledger's Joker, just wanting to burn the world means the script writer doesn't have to worry about real motivations) and partly because it isn't really that great. There was a lot of love from Frank Miller fanboys and everyone else kinda went along because you don't speak ill of the dead and you don't not praise someone's final role, but now a few years have passed it is being looked at with fresh eyes and it ain't that great.

With Michael Keaton, I just love that in the '80s alone he played Batman, Beetlejuice, and the dad in Mr. Mom. That's quite a varied list of roles there :D.

I was going to say Michael Keaton as Batman. That seemed like a really big uproar.

Michael Keaton was very good as Batman!

It's TV, but Bryan Cranston as Walter White. I'd only ever known him as Malcolm's dad before that.

I didn't watch much of Malcolm in the Middle, and came into Breaking Bad knowing absolutely nothing about it without a single spoiler. Was there a controversial reaction to casting Bryan Cranston? I mean, as I recall, it's not until season 2 or 3 where you start realizing the character's crossed into serious villain territory and isn't coming back, in just season 1 he could've been sold as the every-man in a bad situation making mistakes with good intentions. The role got seriously more dramatic as the series went on, but I'm wondering if people realized right away that it was going to be such a serious role and doubted Bryan Cranston's ability.

Val Kilmer as Gay Perry.

He played a similar dickish character in Top Gun, but to make a character like that gay and make it believable fits here, I think. He'd also never done a true comedy role before.

RDJ as Harry in the same movie, too.

Aww, I loved Gay Perry so much. Val Kilmer was perfect. Now I wanna rewatch that movie!

Tom Cruise in Collateral and Tropic Thunder. Cruise as a villain was a amazing! And his role in Tropic Thunder was hilarious.

I don't know if it was considered risky, but I really like Robin William's in his serious, dramatic, and villainous roles. Like One Hour Photo. He's creepy as fuck. Some of the creepiness might even come from the fact that you expect him to be his goofy usual stage self and he's not.

That same effect made Elijah Wood terribly creepy in Sin City. Imagine having watched LOTR and then go to see this one.

His episode of SVU was fucking sad and chilling, all at the same time. He was fucking fantastic.

I think both Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were risks in the first Thor movie. Neither of them were names back then and even doing a Thor movie could have gone horribly because Thor has not been all that popular in recent years (even if it's an Avengers lead up, even Avengers could have been a risk.) But I think they both ended up fitting their respective parts.

Weirdly one of the big names who *should* have been less risky, Natalie Portman, was one of the ones who ended up being the wrong casting decision.

Re: Inspired by #3 pt. 2

(Anonymous) 2017-04-22 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I like Natalie Portman, but that role in no way required a high level of acting ability and it DID call for someone who 1) had more chemistry with Hemsworth and 2) looked like they actually wanted to be there.

I thought Johnny Depp would be all wrong as Hunter Thompson. He was fucking great.

Russell Crowe as Javert.

I liked the roughness of his voice compared to the rest of the cast - it brought out how alien he was to the others.

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. He's pretty much synonymous with the role now, but when the first movie was made, he was considered a pretty huge risk both from a production and an audience draw perspective.

Ledger as Joker. And even though the movie itself was blah, I liked Affleck as Bruce/Batman.

HOE DID I FORGET HUGH JACKMAN AS LOGAN. BEST. CASTING. EVER.

I adore Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in Finsher's TGWTDTT. I remember when it was first announced that she'd been cast, everyone who'd read the book was like whaaaat? because her look was the polar opposite of edgy. Her transformation for the role was phenomenal.

This is still a kind of controversial opinion, as Fincher's version seems to have roughly as many people who hate it as it has people who love it. But even if you prefer Noomi's Lisbeth, Rooney gave a performance that made it so you had to at least take her portrayal seriously.
