It's because fujoshi fetishize gay men and that's bad. Spending half the animation budget on butts, randon nudity and pretty crying, however, has absolutely nothing to do with making gay mean look appealing to the female viewers.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get the sudden hate for fujoshi. Seems like just another way to hate on straight girls.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT I feel like the fujoshi hate has been going on for a long time. I got into the yaoi fandom like, fifteen years ago and there was plenty of fujo-bashing. Maybe now it's at the forefront 'cause of stuff like Free! and YOI.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure but it wasn't coming from other fangirls so much.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2017-06-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You got that one right anon - not essentially straight ones but girls in general. Everyone likes different stuff - some can be problematic, some not. I don't care as I grown up without gay media so will consume all.

Also - those shows are usually aimed at teens who are just discovering sexuality. Friend used to be a teacher in a school for troubled kids - it was one where teens usually were kicked out of home and so on. He was out amongst school and was also fine with kids asking for advice (middle school so not as icky as it sounds - from 16 above and lots of these teens got kicked out for being queer).

Mentioning this as the class he was a headteacher of decided they will not bother hiding yaoi. I was vaguelly amused as it was probably the only school where it was acceptable.

It is a worrying trend though - seen things online slowly crawling back to 'no porn'of the past.

I'm sure some of it is. But some advocates of m/m as a fandom are kinda creepy about it and dismissive when called on it. There's likely bad faith actors on all sides of this discussion though.

The particular critique of fujoshi seems more.... thoroughgoing than that? Maybe that's just my impression.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
In general, this kind of "criticism" usually comes from desperate het shippers who are salty that a m/m ship is more popular than some het ship. They usually wouldn't give a rat's was about gay people any other time.(A bit like alt-rights and comparable groups suddenly magically caring about Jews getting targeted by Muslims.)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But what would the motivation be in the case of YOI?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-06-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's unfortunately true of some m/m shippers as well.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-06-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps. It wouldn't surprise me if gay/bi concerns were yet another thing that got co-opted by harassment culture on tumblr and twitter.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate them but fujo stuff is fujo sruff and LGBT stuff is LGBT stuff and I don't like when people act like shows aimed at fujoshi are the same as genuine queer stories.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
OK so if you're convinced this is just fujoshi stuff, how come it's done so phenomenally, shutting out FUCKING LOVE LIVE in sales (otaku are a MUCH more viable block than fujoshi), to become the #4 best-selling anime of all time?

Even the best-selling actual BL animes, Junjou Romantica and Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi, haven't done a tenth as well as this, and those had manga sales to boost their popularity.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
4th best selling post 2000 anime, get your facts straight. You're also conveniently ignoring that number one and two are blatant otakubait. Bakemonogatari (number 1) is literally a harem anime with lolis and incest and the whole shebang. Late night anime panders to otaku and all the sub cultures that go with it.

Nothing's ever gonna top NGE though.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeeeah I'm not expert or anything, but when Madoka Magica is on that list and FMA isn't, it's pretty obvious that disc slaes =/= general popularity.

Fujomatsu sold 1k less than YOI, your argument is invalid.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
And I forgot to add Gundam SEED, another anime with a massive fujoshi following that of course like any Gundam also had shit ton of guys buying it, but mostly girls, a fact that was a huge problem to Sunrise because girls don't buy Gunpla.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah same. I feel like it's a double standard almost.

Guys like lesbian porn? Totally normal. Almost never mentioned.
Girls like gay porn? EUUWW she's a fujoshi loser who fetishizes all gay men everywhere burn her at the stake!!!

Lmao as a gay girl who occasionally likes slash, it's pretty annoying.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Like

People make this point about guys liking different kinds of porn quite often, and it's always seemed kind of off to me?

Like... with lesbian porn, and also male-targeted porno generally, it'd definitely tacitly approved of it, but it's also not like people think it's fantastic and great either. There's definitely also a baseline attitude that it's skeevy and kinda exploitative, despite how common it is, and I think that's doubly true with lesbian porn. I think it's more that it's only tolerated at all because of patriarchy than anything else.

I'm not really making any broader point, I agree that people are unfair and there's a double standard, but it's not quite as accepted as people make it out to be.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I can understand that.

But my main beef, is that II can't even remember the last time this community criticized men liking lesbian porn, but every week there's stupid fujoshi drama about how gross and fetishizing they are. (Despite the fact that almost everyone here likes and enjoys slash from what I can tell)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
This comm doesn't really talk very much about men liking lesbian porn at all, outside of when Wako makes another thread about his dick, and I don't think people would necessarily be universally positive about it.

I agree that the fujoshi drama is extremely unnecessary and unfun and much worse.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Last time we discussed the yuri fandom everyone agreed that male yuri fans are insufferable.

Fujocourse is rife with misogyny in order to seem woke. They co-opted a term that literally translates to rotton women and orginates from 2chan/used extensively on 4chan and don't see the irony at all because EWWW icky women invading soft mlm spaces so homophobes and misogynists latch on to the "woke" discourse.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so happy that I can't figure out what this means

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.

I like YOI flaws and all, but I always dread the fujoshi discourse whenever a YOI secret pops up, because I know for a fact that's where the discussion is always going to lead to.
Like, just enjoy the show! Who care who it was aimed towards? It's such a stupid thing to argue about and it always came off as low-key homophobic and misogynistic.
