Changes in Adaptations You Like

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What changes in adaptations of the source material do you like?

(Brought to you by re-watching the 1940 Pride and Prejudice and how much I like Lady Catherine de Bourgh in it. And the dresses.)

The book of HTTYD is completely different from the movie & Frankly, all the better. Toothless is a smarmy, talking little dragon in the books.

Wait, do you mean the books are better or the movies? I've never read the books, so now I'm interested.

I agree. I love both, but the movies are amazing and the changes were great.

Agreed. I honestly didn't enjoy the books much at all, though part of it could be that they're really geared towards a young audience.

This is one of the reasons I'm worried I might hate HTTYD 3. Early on there was a lot of talk about bringing the movies to be closer to the books. I don't know if they're sticking with that or not.

I like a lot of the changes in the Count of Monte Cristo movie. Making Mondego the central villain. The happier ending. Making Mercedes's son actually Dantes's. Honestly, I just thought the adaption worked really well. It kept the themes of the book, but made workable changes.

I don't know if like/dislike would be the right word, but I get having the elves at Helm's Deep. Since we know in the books that the elves are fighting their own battles against Sauron, but they can't really show that in the movie, it was a change that made sense (now, having the elves all die did not make sense at all).

As much as Glorfindel in the book is awesome, I also don't mind the scene where Arwen takes Frodo to Rivendell and stands against the Nazgul.

Cutting things like Tom Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire also makes sense. I think those were both good decisions.

I think the one change I like in Cuaron's A Little Princess is the weaving in of the Hindu story. That was pretty cool.

I thought expanding the Hobbit to a certain extent made sense. It made the relationship between Bilbo and the Dwarves, particularly Thorin, more evident, so it made the ending possible to feel more? But a lot of the additions and changes sucked. But the idea of strengthening the relationships was great, and they did achieve it to a certain extent. Also, showing Gandalf vs. Necromancer was a good idea because otherwise you have Gandalf just disappearing and then reappearing.

It's been a long time since I saw CoMC but I remember also liking the changes, especially if you're paring it down to movie length. My dad and I watch the French version a lot, but to me it's like having the BBC Pride and Prejudice and the 1995 one - both have their merits and I like that both exist.

For LOTR and Hobbit, I feel that a lot of the changes were good in theory but lousy in execution. I would've been happy to see the Elves in Helm's Deep if they did anything with them (or it made any sense that Elrond sent them, rather than Galadriel). I also would've loved more of the Council vs the Necromancer but that was such a letdown in the actual film. I also thought distinguishing the Dwarves was good but it actually took away from the film in the end because the screentime was spread too thin with them and didn't allow for the important ones to stand out.

Ngl I know logically and realistically and practically speaking that cutting Tom Bombadil was the right choice, but I'm still irrationally disappointed that it was done because I find his entire sequence hilariously weird in the books and it would have been even funnier to me on screen.

I mention this every time this is mentioned. The change to the end of the movie version of My Sister's Keeper is way more satisfying than in the book.

I liked when they changed milady de winter from the three musketeers into a talking cat. Plus all the other animal related changes.

I also liked when they took Ulysses from greek myth and sent him into outer space.

For all its flaws, The Hobbit movies (especially An Unexpected Journey ) did an excellent job fleshing out the dwarves into distinct and likeable characters.

Rise of the Guardians IMO was a lot more fun than the Guardians of Childhood books. I read them and they were a little... bleh.

I have not read the HTTYD books, but from wiki summaries and fandom osmosis I vastly prefer the Dreamworks version.

I like how Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy changes its plot every time there is a new adaptation. I also like watching fans of the version immediately prior to that new iteration lose their shit like they don't know it is supposed to change each time.

I like pretty much all the changes or adjustments to the characters the MCU made tbh, a lot of it was trimming the fat from characters with 30+ years of backstory but I like how they've done it in each individual case so far(I will forever slightly mourn not-an-actual-god-Thor but I can roll with a more sci-fi(that's pretty much magic anyway) version they went with).

From what I read on the wiki about the Shadowhunters books everything the show has changed I like so much better. Please keep it that way writers.

Much as I enjoyed Tom Bombadil in the books taking him out made sense and I don't think he would have fit the tone of the movies anyway.

And from what I've read about the books HTTYD is based from I think I prefer what the movies went with.

I only read the first couple of volumes of the Ouran High School Host Club manga, but from what I hear about the ending, I vastly prefer the anime for leaving the Tamaki/Haruhi pairing ambiguous.

And since I'm apparently still in the bitter shipper corner: there are a LOT of story points where the Angelic Layer anime improves on the manga, but aside from Shuuko's backstory, the one I like the most is probably the endgame pairings.

Also i'm not gonna spoil it but the end of A Monster Calls the movie is just a touch more satisfying than the book.

I liked some of the stuff that FMA2003 added in the adaptation. Especially the added backstory for the homunculi.

I also liked the Borrowers movie they made way-back-when. It wasn't loyal to the book at all, and idk maybe today I'd hate it, but as a kid I liked it a lot.

Matilda. I'm not the biggest fan of the book, but I really loved the movie. I also kind of like that she got to keep her powers at the end. Say I'm missing the point, I don't care.

I actually really liked the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. I liked the change in dresses. I liked that they made the mother more sympathetic. I liked that Lizzie was bit quieter. I liked that Darcy was more awkward than prideful. I liked that Mary was a bit more aware of her shortcomings and that she had a crush on Collins. I also liked that Lydia was also a bit more aware of things.

Everything by CLAMP that I've read, I prefer everything about the anime adaptations of their manga: Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Angelic Layer. The only change I didn't like was Presea dying in the anime because of the plothole in season 2 and having to use the stupid identical twin excuse.

The plot changes in Anastasia the broadway play.

The Don Bluth fan in me weeps but.. I kinda found the new antagonist to be more complex. But I still enjoy the original movie.

Augh so conflicted.

And the SONGS oh my God. Backstory for everyone! except Rasputin and Bartok who don't exist

In the original Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano kills a man in a duel. I saw a movie version where Cyrano wins without killing him, then kills him when he tries to attack from behind after the duel is already over. I thought that helped make Cyrano a lot more sympathetic.

Very minor, but I liked the change in character design for Petra from Attack on Titan. I think the auburn hair and amber eyes made her seem much more sweeter (which worked well for her role in the story).

The movie as a whole was weak, but I thought changing the end in the Watchmen movie was a very smart move, because that ending wouldn't have worked on screen. Also I prefer a few of the changes in the V for Vendetta movie to the comic.

Also there were a few changes in the Hunger Games movie series I really liked, including the POV change, and changing Johanna Mason's pre-game interview in Catching Fire.

I really love the 1995 movie version of A Little Princess. That's an incredibly unpopular opinion around here. :( I do love the book, but I love the movie for its own reasons.

Becky was about a million times more interesting, for one. And I... actually really liked what they did with Sara's dad. I know it's not realistic, but it was emotionally satisfying, and the scene where he finds her hiding in the old man's house and he doesn't remember her... it was surprisingly raw. Sara screaming and begging him to tell them she's his daughter and he can't do it... the helplessness of that situation really stuck with me.

It had its goofiness that made me roll my eyes a couple of times, for sure (and keeping the timeline so short was sort of odd), but on the whole I adore it.

I like some 90% of the changes the Sailor Moon anime made from the manga. I was boggled she thought nothing of killing the villains she saved in the anime, and that THEY were basically monsters-of-the-day.

Plus I felt the other Guardians were even more protect-the-princess drones in the manga than anime...and even then the anime followed that closer as the seasons went on.
