Experiences with healthy diets?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Mediterranean, plant-based, you know the drill.

Anything you wouldn't recommend?
Did you feel any different on the diet?
How long were you on it? Are you still on it?

Not so much a diet but a lifestyle change.

Eat smaller portions and eat slowly. You can always go back and add a little more if you're still hungry.
Pay attention to how much sugar is in your prepackaged food and drink.
One treat a week.
Find an exercise that helps you.

Yep yep.

Also, eat bland foods.

"Eat bland food"? WTF even is this nonsense?

Re: Experiences with healthy diets?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not because it's healthier or anything like that, to be clear

Most bland food is not great for you if that's the bulk of what you're eating (plain potatoes, bread, oatmeal, etc.) You should eat some veggies and fruit, and spices and other flavorings add taste to food without lots of calories (just go easy on the salt).

Or did you mean "bland" as in "not super spicy?"

That's not really what I'm asking. I wanna know your personal experiences with them.

My experience with low carb: I probably didn't do it right. I added more cream and such to my diet, too, and gained weight, from that or another aspect. (I love the idea of being able to eat a high fat diet and still lose weight but I did it wrong or it doesn't work for me. Maybe both!)

The thing that works for me so far is The Potato Hack. [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DL0RGXE/] Seriously. I've mostly been doing a modified plan, but when I actually use it, it helps. I've pretty much been only gaining, not losing, weight for the last four years, so anything that lets me get into my favorite shorts again after less than a week is a win.

Plus, I like potatoes, so eating them is really no hardship. Sure, it can be a little bland, but that's why I'm doing it modified, aka not every meal. It's still helping.

Depends on your definition of healthy but...I went on a juice fast for two weeks once. Lost weight, skin and nails looked great, was fucking miserable the whole time. The memory of my boyfriend bringing home freshly baked bread and eating it by himself while I choked down some god awful kale mixture is one of my strongest memories. Never again.

Not deliberately, but due to allergies I've cut out about 85% of prepackaged food and make things from scratch. The biggest thing I've noticed is I am so much more sensitive to sweet now. A lot of sweet things are way too sweet. I can handle dark chocolate ice cream, but not vanilla. I make homemade ketchup, and last time I tried store bought it tasted like sweet tomato syrup.

I still enjoy my sweet treats, but they're a lot less sweet than they used to be.

Also adding on, I am not sure if I am the best person to discuss because other than being mostly-vegetarian I eat lots of carbs, refined carbs, and fat. Veggies too, veggies are delicious, but I eat a lot of 'unhealthy' stuff like mayo filled pasta salad. And I'm constantly struggling to keep my weight in the triple digits.

There's no such thing as a healthy fad diet that you "go on" for x amount of time. There's only the diet that you have, which can be healthy or not or anywhere in between at any given point.

I'm aware but I wasn't sure how to phrase it to get the point across. Healthy lifestyle changes doesn't really have same ring.

But it makes the point you were trying to make. Clarity over flowery, anon.

I'm 90% vegetarian. I'd be fully vegetarian, but sometimes my desire for delicious steak gets the better of me.
I've lived like this most of my life. I generally prefer to avoid meat, anyway, and I find that when I eat meat I get a lot heavier and tireder than when I stick to vegetarian. If I eat a big meat meal, I have to lie down and take a nap afterwards. But I can binge on a vegetarian meal, be satisfied, but not have that same feeling of exhaustion.

I've tried a few.

Paleo: It was very expensive. I found myself craving fruit and I never liked meat that much either, so it wasn't even something I could enjoy. To me it was just not something I could do for a long time.

High Carb Vegan: I went vegan after watching a bunch of youtube (but I never went as far as Raw Til 4). I was eating a ton of fruit (6-9 servings a day). It was great for the two months, but I started to notice how badly all that sugar was affecting my energy.

Intermittent fasting: I know a lot of people who this has worked well for, but it just didn't do it for me. I was trying to create a calorie deficit at the time and thought that having two big meals would work for me (especially because I'm not someone who eats very early or late in the day). The meals I ended up eating were 800 cals each and I still ended up snaking between those two meals too.

What actually works for me: If I would have to describe my diet now, it would be a high fat vegetarian diet. I eat mainly veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, yogurt and beans. I don't like to cook, so this works very well for. I usually only have to cook a meal for dinner (and meal prep that on the weekend). I still eat plenty of processed food (bean chips and luna bars are my favorite at the moment).

I signed up for this 3 and a half years ago and it works, I lost over 100 pounds and kept it off. (and I don't have a "lifestyle", I have a life.)

A friend of mine at work is doing that one. I have Kaiser and it's tempting but I don't know if I could do meal replacements like that.

I was tracking food on Sparkpeople and I lost weight but I gained it all back and it's left me not wanting to try to lose weight again.

the meal replacement aspect is not easy to do but it only lasts about 4 months.

Yes! I've been eating healthier foods for over a decade now: more whole grains, vegetables, lots more leafy greens, fish and chicken rather than red meats, drinking more water, and it's been great! I've been exercising more too. My weight and blood pressure are down and I feel good too. Last doctor appointment, my bloodwork was perfect!

The diet I felt best on was plant-based; I ate mostly vegetarian but had meat once or twice a week. (Completely veggie makes my bipolar worse, for whatever reason.) I wasn't doing it to lose weight, though. In fact, I was making a conscious effort not to look at the scale.

What I found (over decades of dieting) was that it's pretty easy for me to lose weight over the short term, but I'll gain it back and then some.

Since I've made the decision not to go on any more diets, my weight has actually stabilized for the first time since I was a teenager. I may not be losing weight, but at least I'm not gaining it either. I've been wearing the same clothes for three and a half years now.
