I have nothing to say, I just wanted to giggle over the mantis shrimp.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just here for the shrimp too. :D

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
V. C. Andrews?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
...but OP said one of their novels. That can't even be ASOIAF.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't imagine that's right. V. C. Andrews stuff is like really old porn: it looks much more benign today, faded and dust-covered, than it did when it was fresh and shocking.

Lol I was thinking I'd missed something as I went down this thread. "I don't think she'd mind??"

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice picture!

But also: Same.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Preemptive outrage, huh?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This reminds me that sometimes I actually wonder why there isn't more wank directed at GRRM, people (rightfully) drag the show but they tend to ignore all the problematic shit in the books.

It could be a case of people not reading but I see a lot of people who tear apart the show use the books as a reason to.

Perhaps because the books have actual good writing going for them? I mean, YMMV on the narrative, but imo the plot and characterization are brilliant and I'm willing to forgive the problematic aspects (while acknowledging that they exist).

Alternatively, maybe someone who doesn't like the books from the get-go won't get far in enough to see most of the stuff that you're probably referring to.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I totally get harking on the tv show because the writing is often sub par and it misses the note on a few things that help provide context to the books. I just find it odd that for where I hang out in fandom, discussion of the book issues almost seem nonexistent. I'm sure discussion has happened but it just seems to pale in comparison to how much is directed at the show.

OP's secret just kind of made me think about it.

Now that you mention it, it is a bit weird that the times where I have seen discussion of the books (and I talk now exclusively about the problematic aspects), it does seem always in relation to the show. Like, there's a point to be made that the books contain a lot of unnecessary violence and creepiness, but the show handled some of the more importance instances so clumsily (and added a bit more of the ~good old sex and violence~) that, even if all characters involved were aged up, it seems to gather even more negative attention and, added to the whole writing mess, makes the books look a lot better in comparison.

There's a long-standing trend of giving literature a pass as long as it's "honest," which more often translates into "truthy." Litfic is filled with Henry Miller wannabes creating sad boner confessional stories to work out their problems with women on the page.

[personal profile] lordbaelish 2017-08-03 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
What do you mean by "truthy" and "honest"? Do you mean that these fic authors project their own experiences into the canon and therefore it gets a pass because they had a hard time with women?

In any case I suppose that trends in people writing litfic are going to be very different from those of fans of a TV show, yes!

That... has extremely not been my sense at all. I have seen an enormous amount of criticism of the books, for a very long time.

If anything, the reason there's no wank about it is because most people who would wank about it just agree that, yeah, the books have issues.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just where I hang out but I only see criticism here and there.

Maybe it's because the show is more current so there's more discussion either way, but I do feel like I've seen a few fans who seem to rarely bring up issues in the books.

I mean, a lot of people agree that the tv show has issues as well so maybe I shouldn't say wank so much as, criticism in general.

Are you familiar with the term "omniscient breasts"? That was originally used in reference to the books.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
As opposed to offended breasts, which I'm having right now.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Note to self, stop thinking about GRRM's breasts, whether omniscient or just gray haired and saggy.

If it's their own OC's that they're writing the incestuous relationship about, it's doubtful they'll get hate. It'd be different if it was fanfic about characters in an established series.

The mantis shrimp combined with incestuous relationship makes me think of one author, because I know she loves mantis shrimp. But that relationship technically wasn't incest since they were adopted and not genetically related. Emotionally, I suppose...

The series is also not that new at this point (2010-2012) so I don't know if it's the same one.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me what author loves mantis shrimp! This is not information google is really able to help me with.

I don't care what kind of books she writes (but if they look good I will read them), I just also love mantis shrimp and I want to know if they have a high-profile fan. They're a cool animal.

One of my favorite novels had an incestual relationship as backstory, but it was weird and complicated and not, like... I dunno, normal incest-incest? But I know that's not what/who the secret is about because the book was written fifty years ago and it was more a (very openly) hinted at 'this is my tragic past do not ask me about my dead sibling' thing.

Seanan McGuire! At one point she coloured her hair to try and look like one. She generally loves a lot of creatures no one else really cares for. I do love her urban fantasy series.

She also writes under a pseudonym, Mira Grant, and one of those series is where the pseudo-incest comes into play (it's kind of a bit of a spoiler tbh which is why I didn't want to name it - it's super vague in the first book to the point where I'm sure most people didn't even think about it, just thought they were close).
