Put your fandom in the thread title. Mostly because I want to talk about Star Trek Discovery when this collapses

Supernatural

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-09-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Whenever I start a rewatch of this show, I remember that as much as I love some of the later mythology, season 1 is still my favorite. There isn't a single season 1 episode I don't love, which isn't true for any other season. Yes, even Bugs and Route 666. Season 2 is a pretty close second place. As much as I love Cas and the angels, the show was at its best as a horror show to me.

I agree.

But that's also true of most shows for me - I really don't care about mythology and arcs and all that stuff in most shows.

I really loved season 4 but overall I think season 2 was my favourite, it just had the most episodes I loved in it and while I too love Cas and the angels when it was more of a horror show I think it had a bit more charm for me.

Overarching mythology can work but you gotta not get too crazy with it and well... yeah.

Hamlet

(Anonymous) 2017-09-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does Hamlet die? I mean, why does the play end with his death? Of course the play has to end with him dying, being a tragedy, but what's the narrative logic? For what reason does he die?

I know it's not strictly fandom but I saw a production of Hamlet recently and so I was thinking about it.

Re: Hamlet

(Anonymous) 2017-09-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it because he's been cut with Laertes' poisoned blade during their fencing match?

Re: Hamlet

(Anonymous) 2017-09-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean more like, thematically. That's the immediate fictional cause, but how does Hamlet's death make sense thematically?

He doesn't actually die in the play. In the production you saw, maybe the actor looked over and saw you?

Re: Hamlet

I figured it was the cost of taking revenge. Yes, he "avenged his father," but he also basically ruined his life and others' lives, using up his life for an ultimately rather fruitless vengeance. It didn't really fix anything, and certainly made him miserable before he died. If only his pop's ghost had shut up, heh.

Re: Hamlet

(Anonymous) 2017-09-26 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the two fatal flaws scholars usually point to are inability to act. If Hamlet had killed Claudius when he had the chance (when Claudius is pretending to pray), Ophelia, his mother, Laertes, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Polonius, and Hamlet himself wouldn't have ended up dying. He is obsessed with death, specifically, what happens after death, and that freezes him in place. He worries if he kills himself, he'll go to hell. If he kills Claudius at the wrong moment, he might go to heaven. Is the ghost real or is it a demon?

Of course, some scholars find issue with the idea of a fatal flaw, and specifically indecisiveness being Hamlet's, especially since there are also times when Hamlet acts without thinking, like the killing of Polonius. In a way, you could read his flaw as an inability to act because he gets more obsessed with the consequences of his actions, consequences which he does not want to face (going to hell, mainly), which could be exemplified in the way he brushes off the consequences of his impulsive actions (hurting Ophelia, killing Polonius, sending R&G to their deaths).

Surprisingly, after years of slipping downhill, clawing up little only to fall down again, for the most part I loved 6B and thought the finale was great.

I haven't blogged about the finale yet, but I've got my Top 5 (pre-finale) Favorite Episodes at Leisure Time. (Link goes to main site, because phone.

I'm surprised by how many feels it gave me and how sad I am I don't have my favourite hot mess high school supernatural drama in my life anymore ;_____;

Best bits:
- throwing back to Allison without it being too cheesy or overshadowing the current story
- All the throwbacks to previous seasons - Jennifer! Void!Stiles!
- Derek coming back all gung ho and then immediately getting taken out of the action. Classic. Derek.
- Lydia & Jackson BFFs 5ever <3
- Lydia telling Malia to kiss Scott to "help him concentrate" (Lydia's go to move lol)
- BADASS SHERIFF GOT A BADASS THEME SONG SON.
- Melissa and Argeant finally being happy (though I was rooting for Sheriff/Melissa since season 1 so this is bitter sweet)
- Coach being the best coach ever, as we all knew he was.
- Theo getting his redemption and fulfilling his destiny as New!Peter.

All in all, this season was a delightful hot mess and basically fanfiction come to life in the best way. Vale, Teen Wolf, you will be missed.

I thought it was pretty good.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-26 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
I totally thought that Stiles' greatest fear (blindness) was going to be part of the solution though and I was a little disappointed because I really liked how neatly that would have worked. I wasn't a huge fan of the kiss being a solution, but, hell, it worked for Jackson and Stiles and in various fairy tales. I liked the cycling through of villains for Scott, especially void!Stiles. I loved the Sheriff kicking ass and taking names. I even liked Theo's cheesy redemption. I kind of thought Derek's fear should have been Paige, but really that would have been creepy since she was fifteen. I'm really glad Kate and Gerard killed each other.

Ducktales

(Anonymous) 2017-09-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Two new episodes, I loved them both, I haven't even bothered looking for any sort of fandom related content because history tells me the more lighthearted and funny the show the more of a steaming angry cesspool the fandom is.

I for one really loved the premiere. Haven't seen the second episode yet. But the idea of a First Officer main character who commits mutiny is fascinating to me. And it will be great to see the beginnings of war with the Klingons.

The future is Dutch (angles).

I liked it, enough to take a gamble on later episodes (it helps that I already watch Elementary, which may tip the "all access" equation a bit). Star Trek pilots usually have some rough spots.

Haikyuu

(Anonymous) 2017-09-26 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
This is a sports anime that captured my heart and attention.

Despite loving a lot of the fandom output, I feel a little bit like an outcast because I find myself liking a lot of the fanon accepted pairings (KageHina, BokuAka, KuroTsuki, DaiSuga, etc), I don't like many of the fanon-accepted personalities that fanficers and fanartists chose to focus on (DaiSuga are the mom and dad of Karasuno, Kenma is a soft precious cinnamon roll Tumblr-esque self-insert, etc)

Any thoughts, both on the canon and on how to find good fanfic?

Re: Haikyuu

[personal profile] fishnchips 2017-09-26 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I've completely given up on fanfic. The vast majority is either extremely OOC, a Tumblr drama piece with the characters as author mouthpieces or bad AUs. Adding to that how this fandom refuses to even try to stop applying very US-centric filters to everything, I found myself completely frustrated while searching fanfic and... just gave up. (My OTP is TsukkiYama and it was nigh impossible to find fic where Yamaguchi wasn't a self-harming, suicidal wreck with a palette of mental issues, most of which didn't even fit his canon personality.)

I adore the canon. I really love it to pieces. But I dropped out of the fandom a long time ago.

Re: Haikyuu

[personal profile] dahli 2017-09-26 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaah, most fanfic is written by younger peeps and they usually use fanon characterization. I have a rule that whenever I search fic to usually look for the oldest ones. That way you don't deal with much fanon or at least find something completely different from it.

That said Haikyuu is genuinely enjoyable. I'm a volleyball freak (love the sport, used to practice in high school, have joined clubs, etc) so I absolutely love the volleyball aspect of it. The characters are also great; there isn't a single one I can think of disliking. Personally I ended up relating to a lot of the characters, too. Ship wise I'm in the same boat.
