So yesterday I was checking on my tomato plants (I'm being optimistic since it's October but thanks to climate change it's supposed to hit 80 next weekend...) and one of them has a few tiny green fruit on it. They're all faintly fuzzy and every single one has a butt cleft. I mean, I've seen bumpy tomatoes before but if I was gonna name this one it'd be the Fuzzy Ass tomato.

And also apparently someone wrote an erotic/romance novel called Scrooge McFuck.

Ranting/worries, basically. Was out of town for the week, got the train back with my dad while my partner took everyone else back in his car. My dad confided in me that he was really happy we got the train because he's been seriously worried about my partner's driving recently. He said that he just seems really sloppy/inattentive and has seem him narrowly avoid a few crashes in the past year.

I've mentioned that to my partner several times but he seems to think I'm being silly/paranoid (possibly because I've never driven) but my dad has driven for years and says he sees him make mistakes/miss important signals a lot. I know he's not a great driver but hearing my dad say that he sits and worries every time my partner drives me home shook me up a bit. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach this with him? My dad has warned me that men hate being critiqued on their driving, but if it means we don't end up wrapped around a lamppost, it must be worth a go.

1. I didn't realize the ending was so goofy with the voice over! I also never realized that the kid stole Gizmo from to sell it. I still loved the movie by the end. Since I've seen this before I really didn't have a huge change in opinion!

2. Gizmo is my favorite. He is such a gentle soul but a total badass. We loved him so much as a kid, our first dog was named after him! Obviously Mrs. Deagle is my least favorite. She is such a horrid person and reminds me a lot of Mr. Potter from It's A Wonderful Life.

3. I think my favorite might be when the gremlins are being born. It is such a creepy scene and the music is great. I also love when the Gremlins are in the bar paying poker and acting like assholes. My least favorite scene was when Mrs. Deagle died. I know I was supposed to find it funny but I just found it sad.

4. This score is such an iconic one. It is able to beautifully combine the horror and humor aspects of the movie. It is so much fun to listen to.

5. It isn't the greatest. It definitely looks like a movie of its time. Nothing spectacular but not horrible either.

I feel it would be horrible not to mention how amazing the puppetry and stop motion. I mean, just look at this.

Watched it for the first time today, so as I was watching it I jotted down my thoughts:

Initial impressions:

Well, thats a cute little fucker isn't it. I want one. And I would obey the rules, which is somthing no-one in any film ever does.

Oh, my. So very eighties. I've met the two human heels of the film and they just could not be more perfect 80's movie villains. One is a rich old lady who hates doges and the poor, and the other is a yuppie corporate climer who's skeeving on the obvious love interest. Classic.

Do I spot chekovs sword?

Aw, Gizmo is so cute. I want one.

WHY ARE YOU DILIBERATLY GETTING IT WET?!?!?!?! FOOL!

That's right. Leave the little dudes with a stranger without telling him any of the rules.

Thats a cameo from The Time Machine. I spotted that. I like it.

So that video the science teacher was showing says that smaller critters lose heat quicker. I wonder if that's going to be relevent?

World least effective Jump Scare! They're still kinda cute, tho aren't they?

They're throwing darts at Gizmo. I do not like this. This is not cute.

Ok. These things are obviously very intelligent, setting traps and using communication. This makes me wonder about the ethical issues of keeping them as pets. Never mind the practical problems, like being homocidal, but... Like, you're ensaving a sapient species... that not cool, guys.

Jesus Christ, gremlin in the blender. That might be the most horrific shit I've seen so far.

And then Knifing one to death? Who are the badguys here? Casue so far the brutal murders all seem to be coming from the humans, while the gremlins are certainly agressive and mischivious, but so far of little threat.

And now the microwave. Fuck me this is like a goblin snuff film.

Chekovs Sword!

See that's what I mean, that one gremlin got the drop on her by hiding in the tree, and attacks her for a good 20 seconds, but where she walks away with a couple of scratches, no worse than what a cat owner might recieve on the reg, that gremlin has a horrific burning death in a fire, with a baleful scream of torment. Like, it seems like the gremlins are hopelessly outmatched in this film in terms of danger and aggression. I feel like I should be routing for them to find away to overcome the brutal humans.

And there it looks like the gremlins have found away to overcome. Gremlin in the pool! Go Stripe! Fuck those humans up!

That army of gremlins makes me want to play Overlord.

All right, this is more like it. Army of gremlins actually doing shit. Fucking with traffic lights, Tossing that bitch outta the window, driving snow ploughs through buildings. I'm not convinced they have equalised the bodycount, but they feel more like a threat now.

Gremlins in the bar, getting crunked up. Contender for best scene of the film....

FLASHER GREMLIN. I don't know if that makes the bar scene better or worse.

Gremlins singing HiHo. I really am routing for these little bastards.

Awww, they got blown up. Boooo. Down with humans!

Why doesn't the snow make them multiply?

I honestly thought it was supposed to be more of a horror movie than a Kids movie. I don't know why, that's just the impression I always had of it. Pretty soon into it I realised it was more like "Small soldiers" than "Critters".

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

Favourite was Gizmo. No question about it. Too fucking adorable. Least favourite? God there's so much to choose from. The dad annoyed the shit out of me, the main guy just not liable to me, he didn't really have a character. The old woman who was mean to the dog. The yuppie fuck who never showed up again. Honestly I was rooting for the gremlins for most of this. I liked the love interest. She was not as terrible as some 80's heroines.

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

Favourite Scene was the bar scene. Gremlins getting pissed, brilliant. I kinda liked the Mam vs the Gremlins scene, even tho I felt she was far too brutal. The gremlins running amok scene was pretty fun too. Least favourite? All the schmaltzy small town crap. Didn't care at all. Also the mass murder scene in the cinema. The made stripe watch as they butchered his kids. THEY MADE HIM WATCH.

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

Meh. Very 80's

5. What did you think of the cinematography?

Meh. Very 80's

1. My reaction to this movie will always be 'I want a Mogwai' and wanting to smack the kid for not following the rules. IT'S NOT THAT HARD FFS. (Though granted the 'don't feed after midnight' rule is almost impossible to actually stick to if we're being serious because it's technically always after midnight in some form, and does it count for local time or what? HOW DOES THIS WORK MOVIE??).

But mostly I wish I could have a Mogwai, especially one like Gizmo, of my own. So cute, so sweet, and can watch TV with me and play games?? Yes plz.

2. Gizmo, hands down. And tbh I do like the other Mogwai and eventual Gremlins too because their nasty side is actually fun to watch in a 'I'm nowhere near this shit' kind of way.

3. The bar scene is always a personal fave, oh and the Gremlins watching Snow White. I love that too. Least favourite... Oh the poor puppy hanging from the Christmas lights but at least he doesn't die, but still, poor doggy. :(

4. It's pretty fun and has a good mix of suiting to the horror and more comedic moments when it needs to.

5. So, so. It's got some very neat effects though, like Gizmo's puppet-work when he's sat down is pretty fantastic honestly, but you can clearly tell when it's changed to a stuffed toy for when he's being moved around and handled by the kids.

Just generally this is one of my favourite movies, I love how it's both a horror movie and a parody at the same time, it doesn't take itself too seriously(but has serious moments) and as a result it's pretty damn fun. And the Mogwai are adorable as fuck. (Though tbh I find the Gremlins cute in a way too).

I've seen this movie so many times through my childhood and still love it. The ending narration actually spooked me a little; I was young enough that it made me think gremlins were real.

I liked most of the characters, especially the gremlins. For some reason, I really liked Stripe and had this idea that he would turn good and we could be friends.

Also, Phoebe Cates was absolutely gorgeous in this movie.

My favorite scenes were Stripe on the tricycle and Gizmo in the toy car. I found it funny and cute.

I don't have much else to say except that I found the gremlins adorable even in their scaly "evil" form.

I didn't have a chance to rewatch but I think Mrs. Deagle is probably universally hated. I always liked the old dude talking about (potentially) metaphorical gremlins during the war.

Actually, now I kind of want fic of that guy dealing with gremlins at war.
