How do you feel about costume bans?

What costume styles do you think are unacceptable?

I think it depends on the situation. I think there is a limit to how scary costumes should be, for example, if there are kids at whatever event you are going. Especially really young kids.

I generally disapprove of bans in anything. Particularly in creative fields.

Sexy costumes for barely pubescent teenagers... or even worse, for preteens.

I think on one hand, private groups having costume guidelines is probably a good idea.

On the other, from experience, trying to enforce said guidelines is a nightmare and usually ends up fairly sexist and/or bigoted.

Like a thing above of no 'sexy' pre-teen costumes. Who wants to be the creep rating pre-teen girls on 1-10 Would Fuck levels? Ewwwwww. And that's probably only going to apply to girls. You want to tell a little girl she can't be Wonder Woman because Wonder Woman dresses too slutty?

THIS IS FOR KIDS

Little girls do not need skirts that short

DA

Looking at the Spirit Halloween website, what bothers me is not that there are costumes involving short skirts being marketed to tweens. What bothers me is that almost all the store's costumes marketed to tween girls were designed to be figure flattering, stereotypically feminine, and at least a little bit revealing. Out of 42 costumes for girls, only two of them involve pants. The other 40 are skirts (most of which are short skirts, whether that makes a difference or not).

That I do find fucked up. But it's nothing to do with the girls wearing those costumes, or the parents okaying it. I completely disagree that these sorts of costumes should be banned. But that doesn't mean I'm cool with big Halloween store chains selling almost nothing but these sorts of costumes to any female older than five. That genuinely is some major bullshit.

This helps articulate what I was getting at in my reply. I want there to be more variety for kids, but focusing on the end result of a kid dressing 'wrong' isn't going to teach them the evils of the patriarchy forcing parents to dress their girls as sluts-in-training, it's going to make a little girl feel shitty about herself.

If it helps, a lot of Walmart's kids costumes are designed more modestly.

https://www.walmart.com/browse/party-occasions/kids-halloween-costumes/2637_615760_1088766_1054039_615761/?cat_id=2637_615760_1088766_1054039_615761&facet=gender:Girls&povid=615760+%7C+contentZone4+%7C+2017-08-15+%7C+1+%7C+Halloween+LHN+Girls+Costumes

I mean especially the first thing that comes to mind with 'costume ban' is a couple years ago when things were going around facebook encouraging kids party organizers to ban Frozen costumes to force little girls to use their imaginations and be unique. (which is especially shameful as I never saw any similar memes about the 84 Kid Batmen and 56 Kid Captain Americas that always show up ) Fucking hell, if every little girl wants to be Elsa why should she be told she can't because it's 'too popular'?

Dude, costumes where a little girl no older than twelve bends over and you can potentially see her ass needs to be banned, because you know who actually wants those costumes.

I think that for all-ages or family-type gatherings there should be some guidelines about amount of fabric necessary on the body. I know it can veer into slut-shaming and that's a risk, but I think there should be limits.
I also think that costumes that imply excessive violence or are too gory might be better to veer away from in all-ages events.
But overall, I think it's better to promote more social sensitivity towards appropriateness or lack thereof of a specific costume, rather than come out with a list of rules of what you can or cannot wear.

Anything that makes indigenous people into a costume, basically.

I hope parents will have good judgment in what they let their kids wear, but I don't have kids and I don't dress up.

I've seen enough now to realize that yes, it actually IS offensive to dress up as a "Mexican" or "Indian."

I still think it's either all "culture" based costumes should be off limits or none of them. No pick-and-choose.

You'll take my Salmonella typhii costume away from me when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

As I said, ban none of them is equally fine by me. Go be the epidemic you always dreamed you could be!

Re: How do you feel about costume bans?

Why?

Re: How do you feel about costume bans?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Because who decides which culture is "oppressed enough" to warrant a ban on a connected costume? And does the ban apply to everyone equally or are there exceptions for people from certain cultures?

Re: How do you feel about costume bans?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
So the problem with a costume ban is just that it's hard to lay down a hard-and-fast rule in advance for which costumes deserve to be banned?

Maybe they all should be. I think I wouldn't be offended by someone dressing up as a German serving wench or whatever, and I have German heritage, but if not having that sort of "haha cultures are funny" costume also meant we didn't have the "haha lazy drunken mexicans" costumes, then yeah, it would be worth it! There are lots of other things to dress up as. Heck, nobody thinks blackface is okay anymore, but there was a time that was a "normal" halloween costume and omg, how dare you suggest it's racist.

Re: How do you feel about costume bans?

I think bans are counterproductive, as they usually end up making the banned behavior more appealing.

Also, I thought the whole point of Halloween was to be disturbing, outrageous, and provocative.

A little girl doesn't need to be wearing a skirt so short you can see her ass when she bends over.

Re: How do you feel about costume bans?

I'm not, but I as a victim of pedophilia you sure as hell bet I'm gonna work my ass off to fight that these girls aren't in skirts I can tell are too short because those kinds of things were forced onto me. The only people who benefit from that kind of costume are predators.

Re: How do you feel about costume bans?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about bans, but I certainly think that some costumes are in fundamentally poor taste, and people should use some damn common sense and not wear those costumes, or make their kids wear those costumes. And if people criticize them for wearing those costumes, they have no one to blame but themselves and I have no sympathy for them. Have a damn brain in your head.
