Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Today ended terribly for me. I was scheduled for less than five hours and was going to clock out when my TL and operator called me over and asked if I could cover for my operator. Ended up going over my fifth hour because "only 10 minutes," turned into a half hour...

So now I got a strike.

The only thing even remotely uplifting is that all my LODs and my other TL (who I find very intimidating at times) told me not to worry and that it wasn't my fault and that I'm a good worker and just make sure it doesn't happen a 2nd time.

But I still got a strike and can't mess up a second time otherwise I'm fired no matter how good I am. Corporate rule sucks like that and my LODs can't do anything about.

Oh well, my other TL was quick to listen to my concerns and reassure me.

I'm just terrified of losing this job.

I’m sorry your day sucks and I didn’t even know it was possible to be fired for going over hours if you were asked by your supervisor to cover for someone; that’s fucked up!

Re: Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably different in other places, but one of my LODs made it very clear that going over your 5th hour twice gets you fired. Even if everyone likes you. It's company policy and it sucks, but it is what it is. I've tried to keep track of my lunch breaks because of it. I like my job and I like many of my coworkers (who've all told me I'm great to work it) and I'd hate to lose it all over a technicality.

Still sucks though. :\

That sucks! I'd be sure to tell your TL about that if they try to ask you to cover for someone.

I am mad because I have to wait around for my background check to be done (it was supposed to be authorized when I did my interview). Then I have to do a drug test. THEN I can sign my main paperwork for my new job.

I am hoping this happens quick enough that I can visit my sister over the weekend.

Re: Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I will make sure in the future that I get my breaks or clock-outs on time with several, several alarms on my phone.

My other TL knows the whole story and explained the situation to my LODs (who are probably going to inform my operator and other TL since 30 minutes is too long for a 10 minute break anyway). My other TL is really thorough like that. She did all the talking for me because I couldn't do much other than nod yes or no because I was crying.

Ugh, the process before actually getting to work at a new job is very frustrating. Sorry to hear about your background check. It's really frustrating when something like that is promised at a certain time and then they tell you later "it'll be done at a later time." Personally, it makes me feel frustrated and helpless.

Sending good vibes your way! I love spending time with my sister so I hope you and your sister get to spend a lovely weekend together. <3

Thanks. :D Hopefully the background check is done by tomorrow.

This seems really weird. Is it because now they have to pay you for the half hour and they have some stingy rule punishing the worker for that? Is there an HR person you could talk to about it, just to explain the situation and get advice?

Re: Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's company policy and the rule comes from the higher ups. It's made clear to every employee you can't go over your 5th hour twice or the entire company gets fined for it (or something, I know it's definitely something the company wants to avoid).

I can talk to HR, which I plan to tomorrow, but all of my bosses can't do anything about it because it's beyond their power. Heck, one of my coworkers went over her 5th hour and was promptly let go just yesterday even though she was a good worker.

Re: Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I can see if there's repercussions for the company for legal or contractual reasons or something, I can see how that would happen. That sucks, especially since it wasn't your fault.

NA

I have no idea what several of the acronyms in your comments mean, so I only half understand what you're saying, and it honestly sounds like you're living in some kind of dystopia or something. o_O

My day didn’t suck as badly as yesterday; my wayward chicken came rocketing back into my yard at 4:00 am, and I went to the work party, which was okay, but I didn’t get to go see The Shape of Water, and I got the only true white elephant in the gift exchange. Some old poinsettia plates that match nothing I own, a used ugly Santa tree topper (I didn’t buy a tree this year and I have a couple of way nicer toppers already), and a cheap Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles throw blanket—I barely remember watching the cartoon as a kid.

Apparently my boss always brings shit like this? Idk. She got a really nice new electric kettle that I spent $5 over the $25 limit for, so I could get one that wouldn’t fall to bits or explode. Even the next most pointless gift was a collection of new Christmas mugs full of coffee, tea, and cocoa mix. And there were Trader Joes and Amazon giftcards. Sigh.

Then I went to the farm store to visit my rooster, who is still languishing in his quarantine crate. I bought mint, lemongrass, lemon verbena, comfrey, and a little olla with a face on it. I keep hoping if I spend money every time I visit, they won’t kill or eat him.

Wow that really sucks to hear you got the super short end of the stick. It's the reason I stay away from gift exchanges. You put effort in getting a good gift for someone only to get crap in return.

Really sorry you got some ass presents in return anon. I hope you get to see the Shape of Water soon!

Oh god, I'll pray for your rooster anon. I hope he gets better soon and you get to have him back!

I'm sorry anon, that sucks bigtime.

I at least feel better than I did yesterday but I've still got a cold and I barely slept last night due to a headache so hopefully I'll conk out tonight.

Ugh, colds are so terrible. I got over the flu just recently so I hope you feel better soon. Getting some sleep with the cold is so hard. Take care!

That's the most stupid fucking rule i have *ever* heard of, and your supers how fucked up your hours should be bending over backwards to fix it. WTF even is that, wow.

Sorry your job has such incredibly fucked up rules, anon, that's nuts.

Re: Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
My supers probably would fix it in a heartbeat (every single of one of them is always happy with my work and have constantly told me I'm a great employee), but this rule is from the way higher ups. They don't have the power to do anything, which is really frustrating. I'll talk to HR about it tomorrow though, thank you for the comments. <3

It may be a legal thing. Where I live you're required by law to have a 30 minute break for every five hours that you work, which means that working for more than five hours with no break has the potential to get the company into legal trouble. It doesn't matter how legit your reason is, corporate frowns heavily on it because they could get into some serious legal shit over it.

Those are some of the most backwards rules I've ever heard of, anon! What the hell? I'm sorry. Getting punished for shit that's not even your fault shouldn't happen.

It is. :( All of my family has told me so. I’m gonna talk to HR about the situation. If nothing else then to expression my frustration.

1. Got my period after 2 weeks of spotting. Ugh.
2. Having stomach issues still from the antibiotic I'm taking, which means I can't take any of the useful pills for the cramping
3. I've had some sort of major, combination headache all day. My sinuses are bad, but the back of my neck aches and my temple is throbbing as well.
4. We went to a Christmas party with some of my parents' friends today. I had to play nice with this guy I'd never met before who was super conservative and awful. He kept making comments, unprompted, about immigrants and insisted the homeless were only homeless because they wanted to be. But I had to play nice. I did debate with him a bit, but I couldn't say what I really wanted to say.

Sorry your job is awful; I’m sorry your supervisors don’t automatically send everyone home at 4 hours 50 minutes or something. I mean, if it’ll get you fired if you work over five hours a day, anyone who asks you to work 5:01 should be fired, too.

As for me, I’m just glad I don’t live in Alabama. *glumly watches election results come in.* Fuck voter suppression, and the Alabama Supreme Court for deciding that all paper backups of electronic votes have to be destroyed now the election’s over. That’s some banana republic bullshit.

that sounds like garbage, it sucks that the company values people so little when it sounds like your coworkers and supervisors are alright. "make sure it doesn't happen a 2nd time" is a useless thing to say. I've worked in some bad companies, but never somewhere that a supervisor couldn't take responsibility or intervene in this kind of situation.

My phone screen died today, but it was a very old phone and I got a good deal on a new one, so it could have been worse. I just spent a really stressful hour or so trying to access the internal memory via USB. The touchscreen still works, there's just no image. Trying to navigating a phone with a black screen is a modern nightmare... I still can't really believe I got it to work.

The only thing I disagree with is that it sounds like to me that the coworkers/supervisors also suck. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have encouraged the OP to “cover” for anyone, when company policy is so strict.
