Question

What's your favorite piece of entertainment that's based off of someone's roleplaying game?

My vote is Firefly

Dungeon Meshi

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
but if you think about every story is someone's roleplaying game

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I read somewhere that the story that evolved into Highlander was initially inspired by Dungeons & Dragons or something similar (not, I think, someone's actual D&D quest but the concept of roll playing games). Highlander really bears no resemblance to D&D, at least as far I understand D&D, so that's not a connection I would have imagined.

Anyway, as long as we're only talking the first movie and the series, and maybe the spin-off with Amanda, then my answer is Highlander.

Mine! :D My fantasy story (nearly done with book 1, whoo!) is based on roleplaying I did online as a pretty young kid. Playing out the stories, being different characters, imagining their relationships and reactions to different characters - I think it's the perfect basis for a story. I love my characters more than anything now, I've spent so long in their heads that they're real to me. Frankly, I think I'd rather read someone's roleplay-inspired fic, which is built on characters the author cares about, than some well-crafted story with a wooden, meaningless cast.

The Elder Scrolls. Based off of Todd and his friends' DnD campaign.

Christmas gift help, FS?

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2017-12-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Specifically, how to gift a download code in a creative way. My brother's coming to visit for Christmas and he's directed me to his Steam wishlist for gift ideas, but nearly all of the stuff on it is digital download only. I know the game itself is the gift but it just seems kind of boring to be there on Christmas morning going "I bought you a game, go check your Steam account!"

I'm stuck. :( I'm a crafts person so I'm toying with the idea of making some sort of scratchcard thing, since you can apparently make the silver stuff with paint and dish soap.

Re: Christmas gift help, FS?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Buy him some socks and put a small card in the middle of each pair with the download codes. And don't tell him about them. So then you will know when/if he actually wears the socks.

With very small items like that, I'm fond of the box inside a bigger box inside a bigger box etc. It's really fun opening everything and finding that it's boxes all the way down.

You could make a really fancy card or booklet and put the code in that.

Maybe buy him some small gift like candy or something and wrap the code together with that.

If you can afford it, look for a cheap piece of merch related to that game (a sticker pack, coffee mug, hat, whatever) and wrap that with a note inside?

How creative?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Scavenger hunt?
Make a cipher?
Digital scrolling message?
Have a light for him turn on that projects the code?
Make a game out of it - like one of those The Price Is Right games?
Make one of those folded paper fortune teller things like we used to do in school?

Worldbuilding VS. Characters Vs. Plot

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Which element is the most important in sci-fi/fantasy?

Do you need all three? Is a so-so plot okay if the world is really cool and imaginative? Can everything else suck but you'll still read/watch/play if you love the cast? Is a well-crafted plot always necessary for a good story?

Are there any examples of stories where you love one of these elements, but hate the others?

Re: Worldbuilding VS. Characters Vs. Plot

Conflict -> Characters -> Setting.

Re: Worldbuilding VS. Characters Vs. Plot

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm way more likely to keep reading something if I like the characters. It obviously depends, because cool worldbuilding doesn't necessarily require amazing characters, especially if there's a sort of sandbox element to it. A good plot is good and all, but I don't think a good plot, no matter how intricate, is enough to make me truly love a story if I don't care about the cast.

Re: Worldbuilding VS. Characters Vs. Plot

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
You need all three. I'm tired of "the setting/worldbuilding was so much wasted potential because the story sucked/the characters are boring." Good characters and worldbuild can distract from a certain level of bad plot (Harry Potter comes to mind) but once the plot falls completely through the floor into the basement, those distractions no longer serve.

Like, shit, there are so many shows I just can't take despite one great character pulled off by a great actor, or really pretty set design, or what have you. You gotta execute all around on everything or I'm out.

Characters > world-building > plot.

I can be interested in something without having a favourite character if the world-building is cool, but the best chance I'll have of being super interested or invested in a show/book/movie is if I fall in love with one or more characters.

I love having people to root for.

Re: Worldbuilding VS. Characters Vs. Plot

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
It kinda depends on what you mean by worldbuilding. I care a lot about the aesthetic and tone and mood of the setting, and the ideas behind it. But I don't care at all about the, like, mechanical details and 'realism' of it.

Which Doctor do you think is the hottest?

Which do you think is the least hot?

Feel free to discuss whether and how much this is a factor in why you watch the show.

Who's had a Bad Day? Come vent.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Today ended terribly for me. I was scheduled for less than five hours and was going to clock out when my TL and operator called me over and asked if I could cover for my operator. Ended up going over my fifth hour because "only 10 minutes," turned into a half hour...

So now I got a strike.

The only thing even remotely uplifting is that all my LODs and my other TL (who I find very intimidating at times) told me not to worry and that it wasn't my fault and that I'm a good worker and just make sure it doesn't happen a 2nd time.

But I still got a strike and can't mess up a second time otherwise I'm fired no matter how good I am. Corporate rule sucks like that and my LODs can't do anything about.

Oh well, my other TL was quick to listen to my concerns and reassure me.

I'm just terrified of losing this job.
