Review/Analysis of Columbo's "Columbo Likes the Nightlife"

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Columbo's last ever case involves two deaths; one a tabloid photographer and one the son of a mob boss. All this and he needs to visit nightclubs too...

Stress

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So, I have to complete my thesis by June. Which is a lot of time, I suppose, but just looking at the breakdown of tasks and months available makes has me full of panic, full of doubt, I want to run in circles, scream and shout. A few months ago, I tried to distract myself from the main horror of IMPENDING DEADLINE OMG with smaller projects, but this has lead to OTHER horrors (I have to present at a conference soon! I've scheduled two job interviews!) instead of less overall horror.

...... stress reduction tips? time management tips? ..... .... beuler?

Re: Stress

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Make a list of everything you need to do. Organize it by importance and when due. Break down the really important stuff into smaller parts. Create deadlines. Get rid of distractions. Make a reward system to make your work less horrible.

Re: Stress

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
This is going to echo what the other anon said, but: at least for me, the biggest thing that creates anxiety is letting a project exist as this sort of massive, formless, structureless terror that all you can do is avoid. It leads directly to catastrophizing and anxiety. The best way to approach it - like anything else - is to define the project, to understand all the parts of what you need to do, to break the whole thing down into discrete tasks, and then to start working on it. Nothing is better - for me at least - than understanding that actually the project isn't some kind of nameless terror, it's a task that I know how to do, and then making actual headway on it and starting to knock it on the head and tear bloody chunks out of it.

make it part of your daily routine and have someone hold you accountable starting out. working in a location just for work like a library helps me.

Re: Stress

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
When it comes to the actual writing, maybe you have your own system, but personally I find it helpful to start (and continue) wherever I feel most ready and enthusiastic about saying something, even if it's just a random paragraph in the middle of a section. Maybe it's because I've been rolling around my thoughts on that one part recently, or maybe I just had a discussion with someone about that part. Whatever the case, I go for the low-hanging fruit first, i.e. the parts where I feel most eager to say something. Whenever I get bored with what I'm writing, I jump to another part of the project. That way, I'm never sitting in front of a computer, staring at the screen, because I'm supposed to be writing a particular thing first and I can't figure out what to say.

Star Wars Thread

It's that time of year again!

Re: Star Wars Thread SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
So... I don't want to know everything before the movie but there are a few spoilers I need because they will decide wether or not I want to watch it it. Has anyone watched it yet?
(I'll post the questions one or two more comments down for collapsing purposes.)

Star Wars fandom is in full meltdown. It's fascinating.

In other news, there's a new kink meme for SW as a whole:

So some people's priorities are in the right place. ;)

Interesting article (not about the next movie)

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Earlier today I was reading this interesting article about someone who operated a largely bullshit news/rumor/speculation site about Star Wars for YEARS starting in the late 90s during the build-up to the Phantom Menace:

https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/star-wars-supershadow-spoilers

It's interesting how this guy could keep it going even when it started to become obvious he was wrong more often than he was right, but it gets really weird when he starts claiming he is George Lucas' trusted consultant, he will be writing the next trilogy, Lucasfilm is paying him a lot of money, and other off-the-rails stuff. The fake interview with Lucas about his personal life is just nuts.

I'm a Star Wars fan who was never in the fandom, so this was all news to me, but still very engrossing.

Outside of Teletubby murder porn from the 90s, there was a Lovecraftian Steve/Bucky fic that completely blew my mind with wtf. It was pretty hecking awesome, though.

Irony and Coincidences

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
So, I live alone. I'm 30. I moved out from home over a decade ago. 90% of the time I'm a responsible adult. But the one time I think, what the hell, and crack open a bottle of wine my students gave me as a thank you to spend a nice little me-evening... my parents start skyping. And I have to do the childish game of pretending to be completely sober while ever-so-painstakingly-typing-so-that-nobody-can-tell-thank-god-for-spell-checkers. WHY???

Share your own stupid irony / coincidence story - misery loves company.
