Quick breakfast foods.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
What are some good quick breakfast foods? Trying to diversify what I am eating.

What I like: A piece of fruit, a bagel.
What has not worked: Oatmeal (too mushy), yogurt with granola (like the granola but the yogurt can give me a bad stomach).

I eat toast with grape jelly every morning. It's fruitish and breadish and goes down pretty well with my sensitive stomach.

boiled eggs can store for a week. Make a good grab and go protein source

Mashed avocado with salt, pepper and a squeeze of lime juice or lemon juice on whole grain toast. You can also mash up a hard boiled egg with it, too.

Also, have you tried steel cut oats? They're not as mushy as instant. Overnight oats where you don't actually cook it is also less mushy.

This can be made ahead of time and reheated with toast or rice:

I like instant grits, but I don't know if you can get those outside of the south.

Make mini quiches in muffin tins and reheat them. Peanut butter or nutella quesadillas on flour tortillas with berries and cinnamon. Fried/poached egg sandwich with tomato on an English muffin. Apple slices with peanut butter. Fruit smoothie with a handful of nuts on the side or some nut butter swirled in. Hummus and pita bread/baby carrots and a piece of fruit.

Biscuits and gravy. Once you get the knack of it, it's ten minutes to prepare tops.

Cereal not good for you (is milk an issue?). Because i love something like honey-nut Cheerios with fruit for breakfast, like cut up bananas, strawberries, blueberries....

Or cream of wheat with fruit (the 2 1/2 minute kind).

Or a smoothie, except i hate washing out the blender so early in the morning. But still - smoothie! :)

Egg toast. Time to make them depends on what recipe you use.

Couple recipe ideas:

There's a lot of variations, picking something that goes well with your diet/stomach restrictions does wonders.

Office Stuff

What are your favorite fun/novelty office items? As long as they have a use! Trying to make my office look more lived in and I don't have a theme or anything.

The only real novelty item I have is a red Swingline.

Otherwise, one thing I did was get some washi tape and got to embellishing. Any clips that I put onto the cube wall? Washi taped. My spinny pen-and-whatsit-holder? Washi tape borders. File holder? Edged in washi!

I also got a cheap ass rug to put in my space, and I got a print framed and hung it on one of those Command strip hangers on the one wall I have, and I have the brightest, most colorful, most amazing demotivational calendar declaring, while spewing flowers everywhere, that The Struggle is Real.

Between all that, the plants, the salt lamp, and the good-sized acrylic dinosaur skeleton I put on a cubicle shelf, I've been told that my cube is very homey.

Your favorite Banana Bread Recipe

Mom's Best Banana Bread

Oven at 350 degrees
*3 1/2 cups unsifted flour
*2 1/2 Tsps. baking powder
*1 Tsp baking soda
*1 1/2 Tsps salt
1 1/3 cups brown sugar
1 1/2 sticks of butter, softened but not *hot*.
4 eggs
8 bananas - best if you freeze them and then thaw the night before.
1 cup chopped nuts (I never put in nuts. Up to you.)
*Cinnamon, *nutmeg, *ginger, *allspice, and *cloves – to taste. I add quite a bit.
1/4 cup Molasses (black strap) or sorghum and/or honey.

Combine all the * items in a big bowl, set aside.

Cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy (brown sugar will not be as fluffy as white, but it's okay). Add the eggs and beat, but only until just mixed.

Stir in dry ingredients alternately with the bananas. Add nuts.

Pour into two (or more, if you had a lot of bananas) greased 9x5 bread pans. I usually grease with butter. This usually makes two really big or three (or four) smaller loaves, depends on the size of your pans.

Bake 45 - 60 minutes, 350 degrees, until a knife or wooden skewer comes out clean. Let cool, serve with butter, or peanut butter, or Nutella, or whatever sounds good. :)

Food advice for cats with CKD?

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2018-01-11 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
My cat is now on a special renal diet for his kidney failure, and I was wondering if anyone had advice on what to do for snacks/treats? He goes absolutely nuts for the renal food itself, which is great because he eats every bit of it, but it also means that anytime we move/stand up he goes into full-on meowing/begging mode because he wants more of it, even when he's just been fed. I know hydration is the key thing here, so does anyone have experience with what kind of treats or snacks he can have that won't upset/clash with his diet? I'm taking him for a check-up next week so I'll ask the vet too, but we're feeling so guilty tonight because he keeps begging between meals. :<

Edit: I have looked to see if the renal brand does bags of treats, but they all seem to be hard/crunchy ones and his teeth aren't doing too well. :(

Hmm, can you soak the renal brand treats in water to soften them? A pain, but it might be a way around the teeth issue.

I'm sorry about his kidney failure. :(

How do I get my cat to stop going for the curtains?

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-01-11 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
She has been doing it a lot this past couple weeks. And I'm honestly starting to get scared that my parents might get rid of her or make her stay outside because my mom really loves those curtains. We've put towels and things over the furniture, and usually we can distract her with toys to keep her from scratching that. But she keeps going for the curtains.

Eek, that sounds stressful. Does she have a scratching post/cat tree or anything like that? Although I bought one for one of mine when I was younger and he was completely uninterested/still insisted on scratching everything else!

I asked for advice when our current cat started scratching up our sofa arms and was told that most cats can't stand citrusy/lemony smells. You can buy special deterrent sprays (I think they're call Citronella or something similar) but I always found that anything lemony like air freshener or household cleaning spray made him scrunch up his nose and walk off, and he leaves the sofas alone now. I was told that any sort of plasticy/crinkly/noisy surface like tinfoil is offputting too, so laying some on the floor might help put her off?
