So no one should never criticize anything, because someone else might be finding value in it?

C'mon. My not liking TLJ should in no way diminish your enjoyment, especially if I'm not attacking you for finding it enjoyable and meaningful.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of people who do attack those who liked the film, though.

It's a bit disingenuous to act as if all the reactions to TLJ (some of them very angry and downright toxic) are the same thing as civil criticism. YOU may not be attacking the OP... but what makes you think OP was talking about you?

I'm really glad that TLJ is helping you, and I hope your situation improves.
I also really understand you on the reactions to this film being pretty ott and nasty, and that's definitely frustrating.
At the same time, just remember that there are a variety of reasons why people are complaining about the film (full disclosure, I myself have issues with it as well), but from what I've seen most of the complaints aren't actually about the themes of bringing hope in darkness - they're more about complaining about characterization (especially Luke), and there being "too many minorities". Just ignore them, honestly. It doesn't devalue what the film means to you.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I really liked the movie. And I really don't get the hatred - so much of it seems to be founded on things that are just really weird interpretations of what happens on screen, or based on weird-ass ideas of what Star Wars should be that seem pretty far removed from the actual previous movies.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. A lot of the criticism, characterization wise, seems to be based on fanon interpretations.

For example, I see a lot of people seeing that Poe was OOC but, honestly? We didn't actually see that much of him in TFA, and what little we did see seems congruent with his characterization in TLJ. Look, I'm as sad as anyone that Poe isn't the sex-positive feminist softboi fandom loves to portray him as, but let's not pretend it was anything but fanon.

I was pretty annoyed at it because I actually felt like Johnson was being kind of dismissive, flippant and "let's fuck with this for the lulz" about a lot of things that were important to a lot of long time Star Wars fans. Which sucks considering that the franchise was important to a lot of people in the same way TLJ is to OP. And I'm a bit tired of criticism of the movie being dismissed as "lol you're just a dumb angry fanboy who ~doesn't get it~" or "how dare you dislike something I liked".

Agreed. I've been a SW fan since I was a kid (so for more than 20 years now) and I loved it. I think a lot of the hatred is based on peoples' fanon interpretations being sunk and them refusing to acknowledge that their interpretations were just that - fanon.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved TLJ too, OP, and the vitriolic reaction to it from part of the fandom really shocked me. Because I'm trying to be more positive this year, I've taken this as an opportunity to really concentrate on what I enjoy about Star Wars fandom. So I've unsubscribed from YouTube channels and podcasts, blocked people on Tumblr, stopped visiting certain websites, and generally tried to stay away from the unrelenting hate. It's really helped my experience of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP! I'm not going to sit here and say it was a perfect movie or that I didn't have my issues with it, but all-in-all, I loved it. I loved the theme of hope, I loved the special effects, I loved the music -- it was all great to me. I can appreciate when people have thoughtful, constructive criticism of the film, but the outright hate boner the world seems to have for this movie is so aggravating.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The bright side is that this is the Internet, and no consensus position ever stays that way.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad the film worked for you. I had the opposite reaction. I didn't find the movie hopeful at all, and it left me pretty depressed.

Probably for some nitpicky reasons like usual.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
This movie was an objective mess. Like Rian Johnson deliberately went out of his way to say "Ha! You thought we were going this direction? Well fuck you, here's an anticlimactic twist! I'm so clever!!". There was nothing organic about it. And fuck what it did to the original trio characters.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it had plotting issues. Like a lot of other movies, but yeah, there were plotting issues there. I don't know how you come to the conclusion that those plotting issues were the result of Rian Johnson deliberately being pretentious.

And fuck what it did to the original trio characters.

What specifically are your problems with what it did to the original trio characters.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-01-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Han: Not present.

Leia: Revealed to be a secret Jedi badass.

Luke: Continued to be Luke, you know, the guy who attempted patricide twice and only had second thoughts due to an act of The Force/God/Lawrence Kasdan.

Few things give you a dark night of the soul like being in the position of having to care for problem family.

I have problems with the movie, but thanks for the anecdotal proof that the haters are opinionated dipshits.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Ha! You thought we were going this direction? Well fuck you

What exactly are you referring to? I can only think of Rey not being a secret Skywalker/Kenobi since that was a popular theory but the force doesn't only have to manifest strongly in certain families.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
This movie was an objective mess.

No.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I went into this movie after hearing all the outrage and I was prepared to hate it... but I ended up enjoying it a lot. In fact I regret entering the theater with a negative mindset.

I thought TLJ was an amazing SW movie. I've been trying to pinpoint exactly what peoples problems were with it and I keep finding a disturbing amount of 30+ y/o males who thinks the new trilogy is feminist propaganda.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain to me why the neckbeard star wars fanboys hate Holdo so much?

I know they hate Rey because she's a "Mary Sue" and they hate Finn because their racist, but their hatred for Holdo is much more intense than it should be.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Not a neckbeard so I don't know what they'd dislike about her but for one, I thought her design was a complete clusterfuck even by Star Wars standards and I thought her attitude/choices of action were unhelpful at best.

I utterly hated it. However, my opinion will not change it or its existence, so I am also glad that it made other people happy.
