I think Shoebox actually treated Peter rather fairly... a lot better than most fics, which generally either pretend he doesn't exist at all or has everyone hating him. Having McGonagall be a little hard on him (a kid who worships one of the biggest thorns in her side) is not too far a stretch.

133. I don't think it's fandom in general that skews so young, just mostly anime and LJ fandom. (I'm assuming you're in anime fandom due to the image.) I know there are plenty of people aged 40+ up that are in fandom, just usually in western fandoms, and sometimes off of LJ entirely. My first fandom was mostly 30+, though that was years ago when forums were the thing.

You're exactly right. My first exposure to fans as a population was a huge Trek convention, at which I was among the youngest attendees. I was just shy of 19. For years afterward, the conventions I went to were populated by mostly 40-somethings. At one convention I attended, there was actually a panel about the "graying of the fandom" and how to attract--or, more accurately, not scare off--younger fans. Comic-Con San Diego seems to attract a much more even mix of age ranges. The skewing on LJ has really surprised me since I started getting into the fan comms. It's weird to be 30 and considered old by people over 5.

146. Eh... I dunno. Personally, I think it's difficult to compare realistic art to stylized anime or cartoons because they're just so different. In anime, I think there are just some more liberties that can be taken anatomy-wise in some styles, and although I can see where that's not aesthetically pleasing to some people, I don't think that necessarily means that it isn't art. After all, if everybody went about doing things the same way, art wouldn't really be very artistic (which you‘ve sort of already said, I guess). Granted, if people are copying a particular anime style completely, then that's as good as plagiarism (and I can see how some of those "I want to be the greatest mangaka-chan ever desu!!!1!" people can be a little annoying). But otherwise, I don't see how basing one's style on the general anime formula is any different than using any other less-realistic art styles. (But hey, I’m probably biased, hahaha)

146. Some people need something to inspire them before they can treat art like SRS BSNS. When I was younger, like 12-ish, I never wanted to try drawing people because they just looked way too hard. Imitating anime style helped me break down human beings into something that I could start with. Sure, my drawings were shit--I wasn't even very good at copying published anime/manga styles--but so are everybody's when they're just learning. Through years of observing people and all those other legit art techniques, I've been building on that to try to make my drawings more realistic and develop my own style, but that takes time and practice. I can't really say I'm there yet--I'm still only 17, I'm still learning, and probably always will be--but if it weren't for anime, I wouldn't have even tried to begin with.
Most of those people you're talking about who "want to become manga-kas"? They're just young. In my experience, they seem to be all the people around deviantART who are around 12 or 13. They'll learn.
I can't imagine anyone who's REALLY serious never changing their style from age 13 to as much time as it takes them to get published. If they don't ever grow, they don't really have their heart in it.

I don't know about the "I hate anime though I used to like it thing"- unless the OP means those people who say it like it makes them elite because they "saw the light" or something, though honestly I haven't met many of those- it's just a changing opinion. (Though, again, I find it weird to say "I hate anime" since... anime is a genre and it's kind of like saying "I hate all movies" or "I hate all books." There's a ton of variation in styles and stories there. But I digress.)

I can definitely understand the "I hate Jrock/Emo music because all the guys look like girls!" thing, though. How the artists look has absolutely nothing to do with the music itself. For example, if someone heard a few Gackt songs and really loved them, saw what Gackt looked like (http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/images8/MTS2_354346_sakura_chan_gackt_3.jpg), and suddenly started going "ew, I hate it, I can't stand his music, he looks like a girl!" I'd think they were being severely retarded. One thing has nothing to do with the other, so hating the music should have something to do with the actual music? I'M ASSUMING WHAT'S WHAT THEY MEAN, AT LEAST. :|
