Hate any trope you want.

But this one exists because it's a real thing that happens. That biological clock 'ticking' actually is something women experience. That doesn't mean they have kids, or should have kids, or that anyone watching should think they should have kids, but yes, this happens to REAL PEOPLE. Media will, naturally, mostly be about real experiences (dramatized to be more interesting, of course).

And not all women experience it, either. But it's a common trope because it's a common experience.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn’t this a repeat?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
People who don't want kids are common too, but we rarely see them or their perspective portrayed.

I think OP's problem is with how common 'babies now!' is compared to the alternative, not that biological clock stories exist at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
OP never says that the whole biological clock thing isn't real, though. It's weird because your whole reply sounds like an attempt to rebut a statement that was never made in the secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Exactly. Men who want children are common. Both men and women who don't want children and never have children are also common. But neither of those things get as much representation in the media as women who were previously adamant about never wanting kids, but suddenly change their minds and have babies on the brain.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said OP said that, I only made the argument there's a good reason it's common.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure this is due to sheer laziness on the writers' part, because those story lines almost always occur five (or so) seasons in, when they're struggling for more personal drama, but they've set up a career driven woman.

Radio 4s "the archers" has male couple desperately wanting a baby

It is just as icky.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

But then, according to your logic, people that don't want children should be shown way more than they are. Since that's realistic too. Real people do that. Many real people. So OP's complaint is valid.

Person A: I hate apples.
Person B: Apples are nutritious and good for you and many doctors recommend them. They're a legitimate part of a balanced diet that includes fruit and vegetables blah blah blah.
Person A: [who never said anything about health, nutrition or lack thereof] K.

Do you want or have kids?

Did you ever adamantly not want kids, then change your mind? Or have you always never wanted kids and still don't?

When I was younger I thought ehhh, maybe it'd be nice to have a kid someday. It wasn't because I desperately wanted one or anything, it just seemed like the thing people do when they reach adulthood, along with getting married and getting a job. By the time I graduated college, I thought... nah actually I'm good. I'm 40 now. No kids, no plans to have any, and no regrets about not having kids.

Now that I think about it, I don't often see many female characters like that. Either characters my age or older have kids, or they have regrets because they didn't/couldn't.

Don't have them, don't want them, never wanted them. Have been screeched at when asked, "Well what if you accidentally got pregnant!" I responded with, "I would have an abortion."

I wouldn't adopt out because personally I do not feel I could be pregnant and then give it away, and then I'd just resent the child for being in my life, no child deserves that.

But I thank them for reminding me why I don't have sex at all because the thought of 'accidentally' getting pregnant fucking terrifies me.

This is my thought, too. I agree that it'd be great to see more female characters childless and happy about it. But it's also overwhelmingly normal to want to settle down and/or have kids, and it's also normal that you come to feel this way even after experiencing your youth without wanting that. I don't think it's a statement or anything, just people experiencing life the way, well, most people do.

I'm also wondering what OP means by "characters who express no desire to have kids". I would get being irritated if a character strongly talks about how she doesn't want to have kids and her decision should be respected, and then goes baby crazy later on. But I wouldn't expect to see a scene with a character just talking about how one day they would like kids as a foundation for them wanting them later.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Co-fucking-signed. Especially when the character never had any previous interest in having kids. Extra hatred when the narrative supports the notion that having a baby makes her a better person.

Is there slash potential in this show? I had been mildly interested, but then heard about the whole fiasco where the male creators went out of their way to brag, multiple times, about how not-gay it is and kept comparing it to Yuri on Ice, which was too gay. Or something like that. That may have been blown out of proportion, but principles aside, I am really only interested in anime if there's slash, sorrynotsorry.

Ooh is this a thing? Tommy Wiseau is so, so strange looking/acting/everything, but Greg Sestero is kinda cute.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it icky? Not familiar with that, but it's cool to see a same-sex couple have kids.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see why that bugs you, and I agree that we need more female characters who don't want kids, don't have kids, and are cool with that. Just like we need more characters who decide to start families later in life, instead of in their 20s. Though I don't think a character has to "express" that they want kids on screen first in order to make it perfectly believable that they might want to have kids at a later point in time.

Is Jojo as awesome as they say? I haven't seen it yet, but keep hearing people talk about it (but not to the extent that I have any idea what it's about, besides what the title implies). I actually just assumed it was a kids' show for awhile.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate this too, especially if part of the reason the woman doesn't want babies is because she doesn't want to sacrifice her time, body, and/or career for it. The man will inevitably say that he'll do double parental duty, but the post-baby episodes will still have the husband being a manchild and his wife trying to juggle everything at once while nagging her husband to grow up.
