I absolutely want kids. I didn't want kids when I was younger, because I didn't want to settle down and couldn't even imagine life after 30. Now I'm getting close to that age and sadly, with biology and whatnot, am starting to realize if I want them, I probably need to start thinking about how I'll make that happen. I'm a lesbian, so there's that, and I've found a lot of lesbians don't want kids, so at this point I probably wouldn't pursue a serious relationship with someone who didn't. And it can't happen accidentally.

I honestly might just pop into a sperm bank in a couple of years if there's no traction on finding a serious partner. You can just like... do that, right? I'm less interested in being married than I am having a kid.

I've never wanted kids. I'm very lazy and selfish and I know I wouldn't be a good parent. I do like kids and I love working with them, but I'm happy to return them to their parents at the end of the day.

never. never never never and I'm in my 40s. never never never, both low-key casual and screechingly adamant about it because in the 90s being low-key casual never actually got through anyone's thick head no matter how nice I tried to be about it.

I have a decent-sized friend group and of them, the only one who went baby-crazy is one who did express interest in children all along. over the past 10 years everyone who has ever said no thanks has stuck to their guns and never changed. they're all in their 30s, too.

I kept hearing it was awesome and tried to watch the first couple of episodes but I just could NOT with the animation.

Why is it icky?

I don't want kids ever. But if I ever need to adopt any of my nieces or nephews for some reason, I will do so happily. I think kids are awesome, I just don't want any of my own.

No and I even like kids, but value my free time, want to retire early, and get stressed easily, so it'd be a bad combo.

I can't really remember feeling one way or another when I was younger.

Movie Club Questions!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2018-01-27 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Today we are discussing Into The Abyss!

Here are some questions to start us off.

1. Did you know anything about this movie beforehand?

2. How did you feel about the subject matter after watching the movie? Did you feel differently than before you watched the movie?

3. How do you feel the interviewer(s) did?

4. Which interviewees stuck out to you?

5. Would you recommend this film to others? Why or why not?

Feel free to talk about anything else as well!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
why icky? I'm at that age, and my friends in same sex relationships are just as likely to be thinking of kids as I am. Did the characters previously say they never wanted kids or something??

What fandom trends do you dislike?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
thumbs way down

What fictional child character would you want to adopt?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
For those who want/have kids, what fictional kid would you like to adopt or wish was your own?

1. The only thing I knew about this movie before watching it was the blurb I read on google.

2. I felt the same before and after the movie. I am vehemently against the death penalty. I don't think the state should be allowed to take the life of its citizens. I think there is too much risk that (more) innocent people will be wrongfully killed. And if none of that changes someone's mind, the death penalty is more expensive than a life sentence.

3. I've never watched a Werner Herzog film before but I really liked his interview style! The people he talked to always seemed relaxed and comfortable. He also doesn't talk down to them like some interviewers I've seen.

4. Jared Talbert was probably the one I remember the most. The first reason was because he reminded me of people back home. The second reason is how Herzog treated him with such respect. Even when he brought up Jared learning to read, it wasn't a negative. He made sure that Jared knew what an accomplishment it was. Fred Allen also really stuck in my brain. I found it fascinating that he did all these executions and then one day (probably due to the executed being female) he just couldn't do it anymore. Not only that, but he is against the death penalty now.

5. Yes. Personally, I find the subject fascinating. I thought the documentary approached the topic as unbiased as they could. They made no judgements about whether the death penalty is good or bad, they just let the subjects talk and the audience decide for themselves.

I want both the little kids from Wolf Children (the anime movie). The little boy especially was all kinds of adorable. I would even take them despite the fact that they are werewolves and this would cause me to start having to pay pet rent in my current apartment.

Not everyone has children or wants to have children. That's a pretty common experience, yet media which is mostly about "real experiences" seems to skew in favor of "women who want babies" storylines. I'm pretty sure that's the point the secret is making, and not "I hate this trope because it's not common" or "I don't think this is a common experience". Like... OP isn't saying either of those things? At all? I guess I'm confused about why you seem to be stuck on that point when it doesn't seem relevant. I see from the thread that I'm not the only one who's picked up on that discrepancy, either.

-the hate on het ships like homo ships are inherently superior or a form of activism (instead of a kink mostly)
-fanart that isn't recognizable as the original characte
-ships and ship wars in general honestly

Eventually.

I've flip flopped on that for a long time and decided that I'm probably going to adopt.

And alternatively, the hate on gay ships because they ~fetishize~ gay people and so now it's actually more social-justice to ship het.

All the Belcher children are great. Tina was totally me growing up. >.>

Do they have to be human? If not, I will totally adopt the three baby dragons from Game of Thrones. We can move to the middle of nowhere so they can't eat people. Well...unless there are some bad people.

I've only really heard that one towards women. It's okay if you're a gay dude or nonbinary because it's reclaiming it or some bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is as common as you're presenting it to be. It seems like of the TV characters who start out childless, the majority will remain so. Just because a lot of TV doesn't want to introduce unnecessary big changes. New parents are boring, they're probably underrepresented on most shows set in the workplace...

People not tagging their hate fics. If your fic is all about how AWFUL this character is, tag that shit.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I really dislike those scenarios because they remind me too much of the real life examples I've seen in friends and family.

PSA: If your boyfriend/husband/partner claims he'll do double parental duty or pick up the slack after you have a baby, ask yourself: does he competently pull his own weight in domestic chores NOW? And if so, why not?

I'm not saying people never change. But the fact is, someone who hasn't been raised to do their fair share of domestic household chores 1) usually has a poor grasp of just how much that entails and therefore isn't equipped to do double duty even in emergencies 2) will get frustrated and resentful about the "extra" they have to do, even if it's only the exact same crap you do all day, every day. The arrival of a baby doesn't turn someone who's never cleaned a toilet or done their own laundry or cooked a meal into Super Parent. Take a hard look at who you date, or you'll end up like my poor bff whose husband's idea of looking after the kids is letting them tear apart the house while his eyes are glued to his laptop for three hours, then congratulating himself on "babysitting" his own damn kids, smh.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Previously had no desire" as in actually said they didn't want kids or "previously had no desire" as in didn't express an opinion/said they were not sure if they wanted kids or not/the subject never came up and you were projecting onto the character?

Because otherwise, yes.

Aggressive head!canons of characters that are drenched in social justice superiority that get tagged around with "you're a bad person if you don't acknowledge Character X is autistic, genderqueer, trans, and asexual" etc. Usually they are based off of minimal evidence, and just are so smug.

I don't care how people interpret characters. Really. I interpret pretty much everyone as gay or bi so I can't judge. In my opinion, if it's something that's capable of reading between the lines for, then it's valid (and hey, even if you want to change canon to support it, fandom is supposed to be about having fun and enjoying the media, so why not). But what's with all the viciousness in trying to force others to support your headcanon? Or the sort of passive-aggressive guilting to get other people to do it? ("Character X is genderqueer JUST LIKE ME and helped me get through a ROUGH PATCH IN MY LIFE so it's hard to see others not acknowledge it") is one recent example I came across.
