well, it's a dumb rule.

I think part of the appeal is that teenagers are trying to figure out their life and themselves so when you pair those things with someone who's also learning to fight crime and all that jazz, it can make for a really interesting character. That's not to say those things can't be true for adults as well, but I think we associate them with teenagers even more, if that makes sense?

NAYRT

I would understand "aha! I was just writing for the wrong audience! It wasn't that I was a bad writer!" We've all done that.

But "it was just the audience that inherently sucked all along" is blaming the audience for not responding, not analyzing what it was about the audience that was interested in something else, what that something else was, or what it was about what you gave them that didn't mesh with what they wanted to hear. Because plenty of people have lots of response in fandom too, by doing things other than what OP did.

Glad the OP's found success, but it sounds like misplaced blame to me.

The majority of my fandoms have been huge slash fandoms, and AYRT is right. The majority of people have a preferred headcanon one way or the other but are not adamant that their preference is The Right One.

There's almost always a vocal minority that go overboard and practically crusade for their OTP. There's also almost always a vocal minority that feel they need to explain to everyone why it's stupid and irrational and annoying to ship X and Y together. But those factions truly are the minority, even in the fandoms that seem the most batshit from the outside.

My dad has apparently become a small collection of health problems that are happening all at once. So far it looks like things were not as serious as we were afraid of though.

In better, but still depressing news my parents have finally made a will, and are finalizing it next week so I don't have to worry about having a lawsuit fest with my younger half-brother(who we never hear from unless he wants something from us. At the moment for all we know he could already be dead.) over inheritance. I honestly did not think this would ever happen, but according to Mom they actually started doing this before Dad got sick, and started speeding up the process as much as possible after he did.

I'm pretty sure they think about it way less than you think.

Times I have wondered "why was coming out important to my family/friend(s)?": 0

I just remember it was and that they did and I barely bother to think about that, because it's just who/what they are.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I also don't think shipping something = not appreciating their friendship.

Seconding this so hard. Shipping is very much NOT an either/or thing for me. Most of my OTPs are best friends before they become lovers, and they don't stop being best friends after they become lovers.

I also really miss kinkmemes. Half the fic I ended up writing was because of kinkmemes and I blame their decline for why I haven't written much.

I kinda-sorta was one, for a while, in the Buffy fandom (i was super active not only writing but reading, commenting, and participating).
I never had an drama issues or problems, just had a lot of fun.

Don't think i'll ever attain that again, but it was a trip.

Re: Wedding craziness

[personal profile] tabaqui 2018-01-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this. Super-expensive weddings are utterly ridiculous. Save that money for a house or a car or a damn trip somewhere, jeez.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-01-29 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, "somebody is wrong on the internet" isn't going to prevent someone from holding an opinion.

But I can see in fandoms that are dominated by a huge ship, combined with the noise that it's "homphobia" if you don't ship it, that a some people would take the better part of valor than call down the wrath of the shipping community on their heads.

Seconding the three replies above mine. (Sorry F!S, I'm just that lazy today.)

lmao

This inadvertent error was just the beginning...

I don't think she's the worst ever, but I didn't think she was that great at it either, most of the romances that got any page-time were kinda sucky and even though I liked Remus/Tonks it got dragged through a dumpster sadly.

I think Bill/Fleur came out fine? And that was mostly because it was barely seen, that and the whole 'everyone who fell in love as a teen stayed together forever' ending that just made me go 'okay'.

It's not that I wanted them all to be broken up or what have you, I just didn't find it believable that they all stayed with their childhood sweethearts.

But I'm also not super-aghast at it either, it just is what is it.

Oh, the guy could talk, for sure. One of the great parliamentary figures of all time.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Standing ovation for this comment. I agree with every point in it.

you're literally being spoonfed shipper fuel so ofc people are gonna eat it up.

Literally chuckling out loud at "spoon-fed shipper fuel." It's so accurate I'm dying.

Nah, I like being a nobody. It's peaceful.

It's all AU, but the only way it doesn't make a difference is if you don't read anything that's AU. If you do read them... well, most people have preferences. If someone wants to read an AU set in medieval times and all they can find are medieval fics where the characters are also psychic were-dragons, it's a bit precious to tell them that there's no difference because it's all AU.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what I thought, too, but then I read the secret and now I have no idea.

Ah, Misfits, how you excelled at filming in seemingly public city-spots without using any background.

Honestly? I think she's pretty terrible at it. I'm honestly glad she didn't write most of my ships considering she ruined one I really loved (Remus/Tonks) and one I liked the idea of (Harry/Ginny).

Fucking migraine. I've been getting them a lot lately. Today I had to do church with my parents, a meeting, and then do a research project for an attorney. Which, I was happy to have some work, even if it was an emergency thing he gave me last night. But trying to do it all with a migraine was really hard. I'm just eating a quick dinner so I can go to bed. And it is only 6:30.

Seconding this, and I actually liked that this was her approach to romance in the books. It felt fitting.

There's a great tumblr post about reflecting on your favorite children's/YA works and being all SHIT THEY'RE ALL TRAUMATIZED.

To be fair

Fandom does this with all close friendships of any gender. It's not just a m/m thing.

Well, he was good when we needed him, during WWII. It was only after that he turned out to be terrible. And yes, I know he did some bad things before too, but I still think he was ultimately a good war PM. Not so much during peacetime.
