Re: Would you want to be a BNF?

I think I have been accidentally but only because I used to be one of the most active people in certain fandoms in terms of producing fanwork and organizing communities and events.

I wouldn't do it again because I don't have that level of time and energy to devote to fandom any more.

Only in that I would like to be able to write well and have lots of people enjoy those stories. I wouldn't want to be a BNF in any other respect.

It's really depressing that talent alone isn't enough to get in. :(

Yeah I don't really see this as a problem. If anything canon needs more m/m and f/f relationships.

I also really despise this "why can't they be friends" argument because it's often used as an argument against legit LGBT ships. Victor/Yuri is a recent example where there was a vocal minority insisting that they weren't actually in a romance and that the kiss didn't happen because it was censored. Uranus/Neptune was another one because the dub erased it and also Kunzite/Zoisite (original 90s anime) if it needs to be m/m.

I had a friend who wasn't a BNF in larger circles, but was definitely a BNF on fanfiction.net. However, a lot of people thought her fics were pretty bad and that her OC was a Mary Sue, and she got a lot of nasty reviews; she also got featured on a few popular spork communities. So I'm glad I wasn't a BNF, because I know from her how much bad shit you can get thrown at you.

(I mean, sure, her fics weren't... great, but she was hurt by how harsh some people were, and would've been humiliated if she knew how infamous she was in the spork world.)

Yes. Especially if it's slash. Student culture was different enough then that you'd have to do a little bit of research to write a good story.

But people today are lazy as shit and uninterested in anything outside their tiny pathetic bubble.

No. The drama seems too daunting.

I wouldn't even want to be a popular original fiction writer - unless I could manage to steer clear of the entire internet, forever.

Orig anon: Thank you. That's my point.

+1

And shows do queerbait people. Slashers are a bankable demographic, but shows also don't want to isolate other (homophobic) portions of the audience. So they queerbait.

cool, a Kids These Days rant, that's always fun

Re: Would you want to be a BNF?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah that's horrible. :(

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I said people actually you fucking moron.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Wat.

Is this a fandom secret or...?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right?

Like... did OP honestly expect job offers for writing fanfic or something? I don't get the point of this secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd definitely be more interested in reading an entertaining, informative blog about a field I'm not in than a fic about a show I don't watch, so there's that.

Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Lately I've been finding a lack of places online that don't seem either annoying as hell or a complete waste of time. These days, it seems like you've either got clickbate, n Purity Culture and Anti nonsense, or groups of people complaining about someone else's internet drama and dumbfuck tumblr posts.

I dunno, I just miss active kinkmemes and active communities for squeeing and theorizing and shipping in general.

Oh that's awful.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. People who enjoyed the show rather than complaining about the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Writing good het romance and good gay romance are two overlapping skill sets, IMO. There's a lot of common ground - more so than otherwise. But especially since people don't write about relationships in a vacuum, there's social context and how that affects the relationship dynamic, for starters. Writing a love story between a man and a woman set in, say, England in the 1800s is going to be slightly different than writing a love story between two men in that time period.

And then there's the mechanics of sex, which might come into play in a romantic fic. Lots of potential for hilarious mistakes, especially for authors who don't do their research.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well first, I was talking about fictional characters, so it's really the writers being afraid of the characters being seen as gay, and stupid to call homophobia a character trait of theirs when it's the writers who are writing them as no-homo bros because they don't want the fans to get the wrong idea.

Second, you also know some people are afraid of being seen as gay because other people will treat them with homophobia and they could be fired from their jobs, beaten, or killed, right? Including actual gay people? I mean, awesome for you if you live in a progressive city where you don't have to worry about that, but that isn't how it is everywhere, you know?

Is the term "Purity Culture" the new "SJW". i'm out of the loop.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally get this, OP, though since I'm not a big fan of most AUs (high school/college ones in particular) my pet peeve is when someone does a flashback, prequel or origin fic where the character is definitely younger, in an earlier time period. I've seen people write fic about a character at an age when it would've been like... 1989, and they're carrying around small cell phones. I don't know if it's down to the author being too young to remember that era, or too lazy/careless to research, or both.

yes

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, writing in a haze here (got a fever). Both are good points that I agree with. For some reason I thought you were talking about the One Direction post on this thread. Don't post while your brains are addled, kids.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I don't know that it has anything to do with fandom sucking. Like... fandom totally sucks in many ways, but your writing not being recognized by fandom while it's recognized outside of fandom isn't the metric I'd use. Honestly, I feel like this is like complaining that you weren't recognized by the amateur waterskiing community, but as soon as you started building amazing birdhouses, the world beat a path to your door therefore waterskiers suck and birdhouse appreciators know what's what. Two very different things.
