What are some of your media pet peeves?

Based on the article about how some TV shows tend to make everything so dark you don't know what the fuck is happening. LOOKING AT YOU THE WALKING DEAD!

OMG YES THIS. Holy crap.

A lack of characters to root for (and also clearly discernible villains who have actually done bad things- where appropriate since I realize not everything needs a villain).

A lack of interesting female characters.

A lack of basic research (could be medical, technological, legal, or whatever, I don't need perfection, but I get tired of really stupid mistakes in media).

Gratuitous sex. Or sex that's in the plot for a reason but there's no particular reason to make a graphic scene of it.

(I'm thinking mostly of Orange is the New Black at this point.)

Once you start seeing Teal/Gold color schemes, you can't unsee it.

Transparent screens.

The massive drop-off in episodic, non-serialized TV dramas

Re: What are some of your media pet peeves?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I guess it can't be helped, what with people drastically changing how they watch TV. But I miss being able to watch stuff where you can drop in and out and watch episodes out of order without being totally lost.

Re: What are some of your media pet peeves?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Not every episode needs to automatically advance the main storyline. Sometimes it's nice to just have a bit of downtime or a one-off fun episode every now and again or something, too.

And there's some shows where serialized storytelling just isn't going to work as well for the type of show in question, the way it might for other shows. Or they might do well at having short story arcs throughout the show's run, instead of one big overarching plot. I think the creators should take that into consideration when coming up with shows or storylines or whatever, too.

Lack of female characters besides roles where all they do is function as a guy's girlfriend, mother, sister, etc. and that's it. No life outside of that.

Watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Written by women, produced by women and with a good 50/50 split of male and female characters. It's the best show on TV that more people should be watching.

Really loud music in scenes.
Erratic camera movement.
Pacing issues/too many scene cuts.

Too many characters. Like, dozens and dozens. Long-running anime like Naruto and Bleach are guilty of this to me. I'd rather have a shorter story with a smaller, more fleshed-out cast than something with 700 episodes and characters that only stick around for 5 of them.

characters who have no personality and are played by untalented, inexpressive actors. Doubly so if said characters are described as "enigmatic".

TV shows that have really quiet dialogue but SUPER LOUD action scenes so I'm constantly playing the turn the volume up and down game.

Miscommunication leading to ISSUES, like if it's a comedy it might not be so bad, but if it's a drama or done in a serious way it gets really irritating, especially if it keeps happening over many seasons. Like you guys have already done the lying and keeping secrets thing and it didn't work out, do y'think maybe we could have them learn from this? No? Okay.

YES! I always have my hand on the volume dial on my speakers.

The miscommunication thing in ANY kind of media, including fic. HATE.

Tbh these days I just keep the volume low and put the subtitles on, it saves time, and scrambling for the remote. Granted this is only really applicable to Netflix but it's where I watch most of my TV these days so.

It's so annoying, like once or twice I can forgive because sometimes it can work, but so often it's just like TALK TO EACH OTHER FFS YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE FRIENDS/FAMILY/LOVERS act like it.

Oh man it's even more annoying when the pair in canon actually do communicate and talk to each other but people write them having huge issues through lack of communication and it's like, do you not watch the thing? This is not a problem they have. But tbh I do just back-click and move on.

Shows that spend a ton of time on boring, hackeneyed plots and cookie-cutter dilemmas to the point where it just feels more like time-wasting than anything else. Where there are problems that aren't interesting and don't have anything to do with the show itself, and people are just being difficult for the sake of being difficult. Or spinning through a will-they-or-won't-they plot instead of actually writing a romance.

Just... stop wasting so much time.

Competent people being stupid for plot reasons that, apparently, the writers were too stupid or lazy to try working out.

People making incredibly dumb choices, like noooooooo, don't call the police to tell them you found a person dead! we could be in trouble!!! Again, for plot reasons that could have still happened had the people made smart/realistic choices.

When only women in a show are sexy/in sexy clothes/doing sexy things/half naked/always the sex workers. Even in the new Blade Runner, like 200 or whatever years in the future. Sci-fi brothel? ALL THE HOOKERS ARE WOMEN. My gods, i hate it.

No bi people ever. No gay sex that's not for 'shock' value or really stupid or exploitative or gross.

well, the original Blade Runner was pretty damn sexist so I'm none too surprised.

"No bi people ever. No gay sex that's not for 'shock' value or really stupid or exploitative or gross."

Someone suggested it above but have you seen Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? One of the main characters is openly bi and it is just accepted as a given fact. No playing it for laughs, no other characters questioning him, and his relationship with another male character is welcomed by all.

And because the show is part musical when the bi character realised there was a name for the way he felt he just had to tell the world about it through song.

The unrelenting Trump coverage. I get that he's president and that the Russian scandal is important, but there is other news in the world that is just as noteworthy. If there's news about Russia or the like, that's fine. But I don't need to have 24/7 coverage of the back of Trump's bald head.
