Is internet vigilantism good or bad?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Is internet vigilantism more of a force for good or something which makes the Internet more toxic?

On the one hand, Internet vigilantism can point out some legitimately unpleasant or dangerous people who it's better to avoid. On the other hand, their reasons for targeting people can be questionable, their responses can be disproportionate, and they aren't always as "hands-off" or indiscriminate on politics as they claim to be in the case of some or completely justified in the case of others.

(For example, exposing and catching someone who did something genuinely criminal is one thing, but doxxing and snooping into people's personal lives is another.)

It depends.

Well, I think you've kind of answered your own question there - it can show why certain predatory people are dangerous, and that's important when they are using the net to attract others. But people can do all kinds of invasive stuff with little justification in the name of exposing a dangerous person.

I definitely think doxxing is a problem and it's hard to see any good coming from that in particular. I'm sure theoretically some people deserve it but the chance of having the story wrong or even complete mistaken identity is always there.

I think the bad outweighs the good.

It's a tool, and sometimes people use the tool in a way that's too far.

I think it fills in a niche that 'IRL' law hasn't quite bridged yet in places - invading someone's personal cloud storage and spreading their nudes is not good, no matter if you like the person or not.

I have no sympathy for someone using discriminatory language and being exposed and losing something from it.

I think for every asshole who gets outed, there's probably five women or other minority people who get harassment for expressing an opinion online.

Re: Is internet vigilantism good or bad?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's pretty much exclusively bad, with a few exceptions. Unless the target is extremely horrible (and I don't mean they told a sexist/racist joke online, but like... they were caught on film torturing small animals) and bringing attention to them becomes an issue of preventing them from causing further harm in a way the law enforcement lacked evidence/awareness of... no. Call-out culture is cyberbulling, and vigilantism sucks 99% of the time even in real life. But people are such assholes online, they forget that their target is human, and I usually find the "vigilantes" more reprehensible than the target/victim.

Very against, especially if it's done against joe schmoe and not someone who has the means and power to cover up crimes. If illegal shit is being done report to the proper authorities, otherwise fuck off.

The bad often far outweighs the good when it comes to Internet Vigilantism. Usually due to fucking SJWs.

Upcoming album releases

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Three of my favoriter bands are recording/releasing albums this year.

Skindred are releasing "Big Tings" on april 27th.
Ghost are planning to release their fourth studio album in later april, as well.
"Catholic werewolves" Powerwolf are in the studio currently. Now I just need to hear that Gojira are recording again.

Are there any coming releases that you are excited about, F!S?

Overwatch

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't play, I just read did & I am trying to understand what and whither did the canon is/came from. Is it not a videogamne with a few comic issues?

Feel free to discuss gameplay/fandom etc. I'm just trying to understand what I've gotten involved with. Aside from the fact I find the actual gameplay graphics unimpressive (how did I fall down this hole to begin with? Ah yes, pretty fanart).

Timpano from Big Night and some of the more benign stuff from the book version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I don't remember them ever saying so but I have a feeling that yummy looking candy in the first Harry Potter movie in the Halloween sequence is magically non-fattening.

Awkward friend situations

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
So, one of my friends just got a new haircut today and asked me what I think of it. And... I think it looks terrible and doesn't flatter her at all, but I can't exactly say that. But I also can't in good conscience lie and say it looks good either because I really don't think it does.

What should I say, anons? I honestly don't know how to respond.

I bumped a car today

(Anonymous) 2018-02-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
no one was in it and no one saw. it was parked sideways behind the parking spaces I was in and I didn't even see it until I tapped it with my rear bumper. it looked okay and my trunk didn't have any damage, so I just drove away. I'm worried there are cameras and I'm going to get into huge trouble. I'm so scared. I just drove away. I'm going to get into huge trouble aren't I?
