I always facepalm.jpg every time someone says "If you didn't cry at [fictional work/scene of choice goes here] YOU'RE A HEARTLESS BASTARD." Just because a person doesn't visibly show a certain emotion doesn't mean they aren't feeling it.

That said, no, you're not missing anything. The fact that it provoked a certain feeling in you says that you didn't miss the film's intent.

(Myself? I typically have delayed reactions to these sort of films. I'll feel sad about it when I see it, but it isn't until later--sometimes weeks later--that I actually cry about it.)
