TV Talk

For talking about shows.

Re: TV Talk -- 911

Is anyone watching it? Because I'm in the weird position of shipping Buck/Abby, Bobby/Abby while not shipping Bobby/Buck and being kind of terrified that the familial relationship they've got going on right now will suffer in a jealous love triangle arc.

Also: I want to watch more things with Peter Krause. I've seen Sports Night, Lost Room and have no interest in Dirty Sexy Money. So should I go with Six Feet Under or Parenthood?

I'm an episode behind, but I'm enjoying the show! I'm kiiiiinda shipping Buck/Abby, which feels weird to me because generally age differences creep me out but I'm just gonna go with it lol.

I would go with Six Feet Under! I've never seen Parenthood but my parents loved it and because we have pretty much opposite taste in TV I've been hesitant to watch it. Might try it eventually though.

What is 911? I tried even looking it up on IMDB but found nothing. :(

It's a show on FOX:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7235466/

Apparently it's written "9-1-1" with hyphens.

Ah, that's why I couldn't find it.

Oh man, makes me miss the days my brother and I used to religiously watch Rescue 9-1-1.

NA

It's actually 9-1-1, a show by Ryan Murphy about first responders, following the lives of a 911 operator (Abby, played by Connie Britton), a police officer (Athena, played by Angela Bassett), and a group of paramedics (Bobby, played by Peter Krause; Buck, played by Oliver Stark; Hen, played by Aisha Hinds, and Chimney, played by Kenneth Choi).

I like it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
But I'd like it more if they pulled back a little on their personal lives. Also, I think Buck is cute and Abby is pretty, but it would be nice if the characters didn't keep assuring us that they are the hottest people ever.

I've watched a few episodes with my mom. I don't ship anyone.
Mom said that she felt like it was trying to be like Emergency!, and that Emergency! was the better show even taking into account that it started airing in 1972.

Not my thing at alllllllll. I tried watching the first few episodes, but just didn't like it.

It's supposed to be so ~touching~ but to me it just feels like they're checking off boxes of cliches. Like, it has all the "right" things, it just doesn't really resonate for me. I just didn't find myself caring about any of the characters, even though in theory I should've. It's just...hollow. I'm not quite sure how else to explain it, honestly. Emotional manipulation maybe? IDK, something about it was just...off, for me.

Yep. Those exact reasons are why I never even made it past the trailer. Especially those cliche check boxes. It definitely feels like they're just using the emotional drama playbook and basically telling people what they should feel and when instead of just letting the stories play out naturally and letting viewers connect with the show in their own way.

I keep reading about it on Fire Station or Fire Department news feeds/twitter because apparently it's being very good about showing the dangers of running back into a burning building, that you need working smoke detectors, etc. Kinda weird, but interesting.

Buffy

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-02-10 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Because I've been rewatching. On season 3 now. 2 and 3 really are my favorite seasons, though I love them all. 2 has Angelus, and 3 has the Mayor. The two best villains, hands down.

Re: Buffy

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have to rewatch to reply intelligently, because it's been a long time since I've watched. I definitely liked IOHEFY from S2, and the finale is great. Angelus was a great twist, the first time around.

I think that S3 may be a better season. I think the Mayor is a great villain, and they did a really good job with Faith, who was alternately sympathetic, terrible, and all things in between. The relationship between the Mayor and Faith. Lots of great stuff.

But I do love all things Spike, and there's a dearth of Spike in S3. His sole (I think there was only one) episode in S3 is fabulous.

S4 is always interesting to me. Lots of funny Spike. Buffy's transition away from high school, and the sudden jarring shift of the seasonal storyline from the Maggie Walsh/Giles conflict to the from-nowhere appearance of Adam. That was supposedly due to behind the scenes conflict between Joss and the actress who played Maggie, so I wonder what the original intention for the season was.

I think that S5 worked really well thematically, with some stunning episode, and the S5 finale is an appropriate and truly perfect series finale.

S6 has its moments (Tabula Rasa, Once More with Feeling), but then flies off the rails and becomes a bit of a dumpster fire that even had the writing staff pointing fingers at each other. And S7 still has some good moments, but they are fewer and further between, with obvious flailings for spinoffs.

I like things about S6 and S7, but in some ways, I think they were a mistake. The deconstruction of characters is always an interesting idea to play with as a writer, but there's a bit of humpty-dumpty where you can't always put them back together again. I found I disliked so many characters in S6. S7 tries to put them back together, but I don't know.

Okay, so I have a lot of thoughts. I probably should do a re-watch to see if I still agree with my thoughts! ;-)

I think season 3 is probably the superior season too. But I just really love Angelus as a character (always preferred him to Angel).

X-Files

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm constantly nearly a week behind watching this - still haven't watched this week's - but I just needed to share my amusement over The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat.

It's been over a week and I'm still giggling over the "Can't Lick Our Dick" Nixon poster in the antique store.

I've been enjoying the season in general. I love how Scully is so badass.

I haven't watched any of the current season yet, but I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it! I might have to catch up this weekend.

My heart is broken.

Rafael Barba deserved so much better than this character assassination followed by a goodbye filled with cliches, and only a goodbye to one of the main characters (although I'm glad they at least acknowledged how much he and Liv meant to each other in SOME way).

What happened? I've only seen some of the episodes with him, but he's always seemed like an interesting character.

Re: TV Talk - Law and Order: SVU (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
He's been the best thing about the show for a while now IMHO... over the past few years he's been this amazingly courageous, intelligent character who's been willing to take a stand even when it ends up turning half the city against him. He's gotten closer and closer to Olivia to the point that there's a lot of hints of romance between them, and at the very least they're very close friends...

Then in this past episode, out of nowhere, they introduce a previously unmentioned plot element about his personal conflict surrounding his father and "right to die" issues and use that to justify his making the decision to PULL THE PLUG on an INFANT's life support - to physically do it himself, not just say find a way for the mother to do it, or something like that.

He was tried for murder and found not guilty, but then left his position anyway, only saying that he "had to move on" as a reason or an answer as to what he's doing next.

He had a pretty sweet moment with Liv in the end where he all but confessed his love to her, and kissed her (on the forehead).

But aside from that moment, it was an insulting farewell to a much loved character. :/

Re: TV Talk - Law and Order: SVU (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't love it, either. He's been my favorite character for a long time and it seemed to come out of nowhere. I wish there was some sort of buildup to it, or something.

I wish he'd gotten to say goodbye to the other characters, but I did like his last scene with Olivia. In the end I liked that the exact nature of their relationship was sort of ambiguous. I mean, on some level I kind of shipped them, but at the same time, male/female friendships that don't eventually turn romantic are pretty rare so I always appreciate them.

But as sad as I am about him leaving, I'm hoping that at least some of the misogynistic vitriol directed at Olivia by some of his fans will stop.

Re: TV Talk - Law and Order: SVU (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
OP - I agree with you, I love their friendship for what it is, though I also kind of ship them. I liked their final scene... it left just enough that if you want to see it as romantic you can, but don't have to.

And I wasn't aware people were being hateful toward her. :/ That's not at all okay.

I just wish he was still gonna be on the show. I hate to lose him, he's my favorite - and I hate the way they did it. :(
