I totally sympathize, that completely sucks.

And I know it's not a perfect replacement and doesn't provide that in-person connection, but it might be worth investigating games that are play-by-post or over Skype or stuff like that?

I think the reason that people think of that way is primarily because that's how the movie's fans have understood themselves - in other words, because that's the primary reason that it's popular and beloved.
