But...he saves her

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
She still spends most of the movie dead to give him angst, though

nightscale: Stitch with a guitar (Disney: Stitch)

Yeah I wasn't thrilled about this.

I mean she gets saved(maybe, not sure how 'canon' the after-credits scenes are tbh) but that still doesn't change that she spends the whole movie dead to give him Angst.

... not that you care, but this type of bullshit kneejerk binary dismissal makes me lose all respect for the intelligence of the speaker.

I mean...they acknowledged that it was blatant fridging during the opening credits and also undid it later, but I actually thought it was a sort-of clever way to incorporate Deadpool's relationship with Death without having to introduce a literal skeleton-tiddy personification of death (who's also dated Thanos?) to the universe.

I really hope Vanessa becomes Death and have an active role in later movies.

I mean, she was Wade's romantic object and focal point of angst in the first movie too. So, I'm not sure why you were expecting them to give her anything to do in the sequel. She's not Copycat in this universe, so I'm not sure what she would have done except been Wade's cheerleader/receptionist if she'd been given a bigger role.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
honest question: is there some property rights reason she couldn't have been copycat in this universe? or other reason it would have adapted really poorly? because 'oh no we can't give her a bigger role bc she's a normie now' is even less of an excuse if changing her from a costumed/powered fighter into a civilian was an active creative decision by the movie team. And even if copycat didn't work they could give her some other ability or weapon??? idk, they're writers, it's literally their job to be creative.

otoh being a live source of angst can still be stereotypical in some ways (Big Damsel Rescue Scene, etc) but I can definitely see how it would effect people pretty differently from getting killed for angst.

They openly acknowledged what they did. It was deliberately done, and then just as deliberately undone. Deadpool 2 did a LOT of blatant shit and was entirely self aware of it. THAT'S what makes a huge difference in this case. They were like 'naw, we know what we did. here's your entertainment, and then, we're gonna fix it boom done lol that's for the 12.50$!'

I mean

the level of self-awareness? deliberately taking the piss? DEFINITELY makes a difference. they owned up to it and then reversed it. lol. get over it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
They weren't always planning on bringing her back, in the version test audiences saw she stayed dead

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know anything about those movies but isn't that the actor lol why are you placing the blame on people who just take paychecks to do what they're told to and look pretty. Shouldn't that be on the writers, the directors, the producers, anyone else?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a horse in this race (haven't seen the movie yet, just seen spoilers), but Reynolds was one of the writers.

I can't find it in me to be upset about fridging to be honest. Most action/drama/whatever movies need a 'spur' or 'motivation' and 9 times out of 10 it's going to be the main character's wife, husband. girlfriend, boyfriend, child, whatever because that's going to give them the biggest angst kick to ~avenge~.

Especially someone like Deadpool, killing some rando off the street isn't exactly going to push him into action.

+1

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, nine out of ten times it's going to be the wife/girlfriend, because nine out of ten movie protags are dudes, and heaven forbid big budget gay shit exist in 2018.

Any one story featuring a dead wife can be a good story, and grief is a real motivator. But when women get stuck with that role over and over and over, and their deaths are always about the dude more than about the women themselves...that's a bad pattern and it sucks when something you love plays into it.

I feel you. I don't think bringing her back in the end totally undid fridging her at the beginning.

Mostly I think fridging is LAZY.

Vanessa could have been shot but survived--maybe paraplegic? DP would still go on the immediate rampage because she'd been hurt, still kill the Russian. But it would be more complex characterization if, say, the doctors who saved her weren't sure if she could safely carry a child to term, which made DP realize how badly he wanted a family, and his actions were driven by him grieving the loss of the life he suddenly realized he'd wanted and couldn't have, instead of grieving the loss of Vanessa.
