Fun fact to those not on tumblr

I've been on it for over 5 years. I'm in my 20s.

It's easy to cultivate a dashboard/community you interact with that isn't toxic.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be, but this is kind of a simplistic response.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
(da) Not really? Blocking toxic people in the tags and following not toxic people is an option. You can shape your own fandom experience to a certain extend.

Blocking toxic people requires knowing they are toxic before they decide to brigade you with a score (or more) of their friends.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
How difficult is it to tell that someone may be toxic?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-06-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
You have to read their blog before:

1. they do a keyword search looking for something to rage about
2. they identify one of your posts containing that keyword
3. they reblog it with a "callout" (usually little more than "bad post op")
4. it gets picked up throughout their entire network putting hundreds of randos on your timeline in a matter of hours.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. They're pretty obvious on their post, the stuff they reblog and their "don't follow if..."

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it surprises me that so many people on f!s can’t seem to know toxic people from non-toxic people. If toxic shits are as obvious as so many people on here say they are and as OP illustrates in their secret, then how the fuck is it so hard to know who to block and who not to block?

Hell I block people on petty shit. Blocking isn’t hard. You’re free to block who you want for whatever reason. Why be so hesitant to use that damn button?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
No fucking shit. Blocking someone once you've seen their shit is easy and I'm pretty sure most people already do that.

However, a lot of the more dedicated anti-whatever blogs will create multiple accounts because they know people are blocking them. Depending on the fandom size it's never just one or a few people that you block and everything is better. There are hundreds and even if you block them there are more bandwagoners coming all the time.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-06-19 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
How do you know who's targeting you through keyword searches before they've issued their "callout?" (Which may not even appear on your timeline, since it's a common practice on tumblr to use screenshots to get around blocks.) After the callout happens, you're playing whack-a-mole against a harassment mob of dozens and their sockpuppets.

It's why people have been dropping out of social media right and left lately. Personal block tools don't scale to handle multi-account mob brigading.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
You still have to see their shit then look at their profile to determine their toxicity.
One down... hundreds more to go and new ones incoming all the time.

Never mind the fact that some people whose blogs I love don't just ignore the toxic people like they should, they have to reblog and talk about it all the time. So I still have to see it. Or maybe I should just lecture them on what they should and should not interact with.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
So you, like, follow people blindly just because they posted one nice gif set? You don't see what else they post or their profile before following them?

And those people you follow don't tag that shit? Because if they tag consistently, you can blacklist those tags and not see them talking about that.

yet another anon

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
For myself, I agree. I have no idea where OP even sees these people. My tumblr isn't entirely drama-free, but it sure isn't toxic.

For others, though? People are very bad at seeing through others' malice. You and I can tell, but I personally suspect I can only tell because I had a duplicitous "friend" when I was 13 or so -- taught me my lesson early; I've only befriended trustworthy people since then (making an exception for work/business relations, because...can't choose now, can ya). And while I've kept wankers around, I take them off my reading list or block them at will, first time, no second shot.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't exactly a situation where "block the haters" is all that helpful, though? If a group has decided to hunt you down & harass you because of your fandom opinions, having a mess-free dash isn't going to stop them. If you can stay out of trouble & simply hate the fact that other people are targeted by these kids for (nearly always) no real reason, ignoring they exist really won't magically stop these people from bullying others out of fandom, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
They crave attention tho. When they'r ignored, they move on (sometimes they even leave the fandom).

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on the person calling them out & how many loyal followers they have, tbh. I've seen cases of people continuously stalking and harassing someone even after they'd outright remade (only telling mutuals what their new url was).

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Those are extreme cases, but starting from scratch and only contacting mutuals (though I don't think that's a good idea if those harassers can use that to track them down) some weeks later, once those people aren't tracking them any longer, is still an option.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair and true.

But, how common is this?

If we stopped feeding these people, they'd eventually recede into the dark abyss where they belong.

...that, or they get published, and a television show made. Life is depressing as hell sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
yeah but it's hard to stop the actual toxic that's spewing forth. fujoshi and "pedo" discourse is the worse because it spills over outside of your dash by cultivating this echo chamber and promoting false info that bleeds into other fandom sources like twitter and discord. Just recently I had to leave a discord for a ship I like because there was wank about Ava's demons creator being a pedophile and fujoshi are nasty girls who need to die while not knowing the term originated on Fucking 2chan and 4chan. The misogyny is out of control and borderline impossible to avoid. Don't forget god forbid any male character that girls like get popular and it's suddenly X IS THE NEWS SANS/ONCELER and holding male beardo anime fans as the authority of everything.

Sometimes it just doesn't work.txt

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
what fandoms are you in

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Pick a fandom that's slash heavy and or big/popular. Any fandom. I'm not even in all of these but the ones I've seen this shit crop up in so far are:

-overwatch (apparently shipping a 37 year old man with a 50+ year old man is pedo)
-fallout (shipping a 19 yo femPC with a middle aged man is fine. Shipping a 19 yo MalePC is predatory)
-Detroit: become human (you can't ship the two buddy cops because it's somehow incest even tho there is no father/son dynamic OR subtext)
-literally any anime fandom with a primarily male cast (free! Yoi, etc)
-persona
-MCU fandom in general
-comics fandom
-any works where teenagers are the main characters
-stranger things and IT

Seriously you'd have to be willfully blind to ignore this shit

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I meant specifically with the pedo/fujoshi discord story, sorry for not being clearer

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
ah that's okay. Sorry I misunderstood and came across as aggressive. It was the HankCon discord for Detroit: Become Human. One of the mods started fujoshi wanking and I was out.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. You're leaving out:
people who seemed nice then fall into a rabbithole of getting with the wrong crowd and becoming assholes. For example, a former mutual of mine who seemed funny and fun, who I had talked one on one for ages suddenly took on an interest in radical feminism and became extremely biphobic and transphobic overnight.

Then there was one fan who was perfectly nice until she got to a big wanky fandom and became a complete asshat.

I could go on and on about people who seem fine but turn out to be monsters later on.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
This! I made a friend from a video game fandom whom I really liked and cared about until I found a post with screencaps of them telling someone to kill themselves.

I block users and don't follow tags. That doesn't stop mutuals who used to be okay suddenly 'seeing the light' and starting to spew REG rhetoric.
